    Kyoto Kameokashi Hoduchou Shimonakajima 2
This thrilling riverboat ride travels approximately 16 kilometers from Kameoka in Tamba to scenic Arashiyama in Kyoto over a period of about two hours. The boat course was originally used as a means to transport materials down the Hozu River to Kyoto and Osaka. The natural and seasonal beauty of the gorge through which the river travels, however, was so great that this section of the river was turned into a boat ride course for tourists in 1895. Veteran boatman use pole, rudder, and oar to guide the vessel, impressively squeezing through rocky stretches. The boat continues to operate even on rainy days, when a tent is erected for the comfort of riders.

Due to a capsizing accident that left two employees dead, this cruise is cancelled until an investigation is completed. Cancelled at least through the end of June 2023.

Izumo Daijingu Shrine is famous as a shrine for marriage. There is an abundance of things to see including the Meoto-iwa that links the red strings of fate attached to marriage charms, the miraculous Manai water that gushes from Mt. Mikage as the goshintaizan (mountain worshiped as the sacred dwelling place of a deity or deities) and the iwakura where good fortune resides. Prayers for marriage are held on the fourth Sunday of every month.

Kyoto Kameokashi Kosechou North Ages 81-1
Tamba Kameyama Castle was built by Akechi Mitsuhide as a strategic base in Tamba Province (the old name for the area north of present-day Osaka and Kobe) during the late 16th century. During the regime of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the importance of the castle led to its further fortification and the development of a castle town. During the Edo Period, the government ordered the most powerful feudal lords to update and repair the fortifications. As a result of the abolition of the feudal system at the beginning of the Meiji Period (1868-1912), the castle was demolished, and many of its documents and wall stones were sold off. The site of the castle was abandoned and unused until 1919, when members of the Omoto sect of Shinto unearthed stones from the former castle walls and reconstructed the walls, which remain standing today. The entire castle site is the property of the Omoto sect, and those who wish to tour it must apply at the reception desk.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
