A large site that stretched 1.5 kilometers east to west and one kilometer north to south, it was lined with a garden with a pond, palaces and temple buildings. Now, only Anrakuju-in Temple, the mausoleums for emperors Shirakawa, Toba and Konoe, Jonangu Shrine and artificial hills remain. Through postwar excavations, the site of a room facing south in the palace was designated as a national historical site, and has been maintained as a historic park. Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
