Kyoto Kyoto-shi Nakagyo-ku Shinkyogoku Dori Rokukaku Sagaru Nakasujicho 487
This temple is on the Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping street in the heart of Kyoto. No one is sure when exactly it was founded, but it is recorded that the main hall was built for Izumi Shikibu, who served Empress Shoshi, daughter to imperial adviser Fujiwara no Michinaga. The first abbot, Izumi Shikibu, is a symbol of the middle Heian period, and her 247 waka poems are collected in an imperial anthology. This temple is known for offering wisdom and success in love based on Izumi's legacy, and visitors come by while out shopping and sightseeing in the area. It is one of the eight shrines and temples on the Shinkyogoku Seal Tour.

Kyoto Kyoto-shi Nakagyo-ku Sanjodori Kawaramachi Nishi Iru
A needle specialty shop with a large signboard announcing its location on Sanjo-dori Street just off of Kawaramachi-dori Street. The store itself is just along a narrow alley. Misuyabari needles, created as if they were little katana swords, are set apart by the lack of resistance you'll feel when sewing. By adding a small angle to the tip of the needle too small to be seen with the naked eye as well as vertical streaks during the polishing process they create needles that pass through the fabric without cutting the threads. It's also fun to look at their array of needles that you wouldn't normally see including American needles, silk needles, and pongee needles.

A lovely, lovely shop for handmade needles. A single tiny needle, a work of true craftsmanship, can cost more than 12 USD, the quality is outstanding and the garden in front of the shop, which is not...

  • Wajo Ryomen Sugari
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Kyoto Kyoutoshi Nakagyou-ku Kannondouchou 471-1
Wajo Ryomen Sugari, about two minutes' walk from Shijo Station on the Kyoto Metro Karasuma Line, serves a much-talked-about tsukemen (noodles with dipping sauce). The restaurant looks like an insignificant traditional machiya-style house from the outside, but inside, it has spacious counter seating. Whole wheat noodles, good sources of vitamins and dietary fiber, are dipped in savory broth made with pork bones and seafood and no chemical additives. The concept underlying the restaurant is three benefits. The use of natural ingredients insures peace of mind, safety, and cleanliness, so it benefits the buyer. Warm-hearted customer service benefits the seller. Rehabilitating an old machiya townhouse benefits the community.

A venerable eel restaurant founded at the end of the Taisho period located in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. The warm and retro looking exterior looks the same as when the restaurant was established and stands out all the more amongst the throngs of buildings in Shinkyogoku. The key to the shop’s flavor is a secret sauce passed down for one hundred years which brings out the savory deliciousness of plump eels from Lake Hamana. Particularly popular are the standard eel rice bowl and the restaurant’s famous “kinshi-don”—eel rice bowl topped with an egg fried Kyoto style. One of the restaurant’s customs is the “Kaneyo Yose” held each month, an event which includes live entertainment with a meal.

The grilled eel was absolutely fantastic. Tastes great! The food presentation was top notch. Quality service, nice food and traditional decoration, it is worth to visit!

This venerable café located in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture was founded in 1932. The flavor of the coffee, which has been roasted in-house since the shop was first opened, goes perfectly with the café’s fluffy pancakes and French toast. The shop’s retro and relaxing atmosphere backed by the warmth of brick and wood is also part of its charm. A Western-style restaurant is located on the second floor; the Smart Lunch, which gives you a choice of two main dishes, is its feature menu item. Smart Coffee is popular not only with regulars but tourists as well.

Pancakes were definitely my favourite, the sandwiches were good too but if you have a sweet tooth definitely go for the pancake! You can also get it in a set with a drink.

This store specializing in matcha green tea is located in Kyoto's Shijo Kawaramachi, and among the nine branches they have opened mainly in Asia they provide an original menu that has arranged items reimported from the matcha green tea culture that has developed overseas. Known for using matcha from Kyoto's long-established shop Morihan, on off-days it is so popular that there will be lines several hours long. The most popular item is the matcha tiramisu, in which mascarpone cheese and sponge cake are placed into a masu (traditional square measuring cup) and given a sprinkling of matcha on top. The thick texture with the fragrance of the matcha makes for an exquisite combination and is one of their specialty sweets. The closest station is Kawaramachi Station.

A quick stop at a Maccha House, why not? I discovered the chocolate maccha ice cream for myself and I was positively surprised. So for any maccha fan a definite must stop and for people like myself...

This classical coffee shop was inherited by the owner after 50 years of business and the name was changed to the present. The menu includes carefully selected coffee, as well as nostalgic Neapolitan tomato sauce spaghetti served on an iron plate and Bolognese meat sauce spaghetti. The most eye-catching item on the menu is the “Corona omelet sandwich” inherited from the ex-owner of the shop used to be named Café Corona. This is a fluffy thick omelet sandwiched between thin pieces of bread. It is a popular dish featured in magazines and on TV programs.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
