Kyoto Kyoutoshi Sakyou-ku Nanzenjifukuchichou

Suirokaku is bridge over a canal in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward. It is made of brick and built with arches, a design that calls to mind the art objects of ancient Rome. Located on a branch of a canal coming out of Lake Biwa, it was completed in 1888. It was built with special consideration for blending into the surrounding scenery, even as the canal flows through the grounds of Nanzenji Temple. The bridge has been used as a location for television dramas.

This Buddhist temple located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City is commonly called the Shin’nyo-do. The temple was founded in 984 when the priest Kaisan enshrined a figure of Amitabha from the Jyogyo-do Hall on Mt. Hiei. This figure, called the “Nodding Amitabha,” is said to provide aid to women. The current temple hall was erected in the mid-Edo period (1693–1717). The grounds carry an atmosphere befitting a major temple and are home to the massive main hall (an Important Cultural Property) and a beautiful three–story pagoda. The temple is also fast becoming a popular spot to view the scarlet maple leaves and bustles with visitors in fall.

Hakusasonso, a memorial to the Japanese-style painter Hashimoto Kansetsu, is located near Ginkakuji Temple (Silver Pavilion) in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward. The villa that Hashimoto designed for himself and the four-season garden are open to the public. Hashimoto's works are displayed inside the house, and other exhibits, such as his collection, are displayed there as well. This temple is in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. Built in 1654, it is of the Nanzenji branch of the Rinzai Sect of Buddhism. Housing over 200 goshoningyo, (palace dolls), and other treasures, its collection rivals that of the imperial household. There is a Japanese style pond garden on the premises where visitors enjoy the camellias and autumn foliage. A restaurant serving homemade udon noodles located close to the Ginkaku-ji Temple in Kyoto City. This shop popularized “omen,” Gunma-style udon noodles, when they were not yet well known in the Kansai region when the shop first opened in 1967. The noodles, made with wheat from Joshu (old name of Gunma Prefecture), are flavorful, smooth, and chewy. The noodles are steeped in a slightly strong broth made with high quality kombu kelp and skipjack tuna and are served with sesame seeds, seasonal vegetables, and salty-sweet kinpira gobo (stewed burdock root). The restaurant also serves a wide variety of other dishes depending on the season, perfect for enjoying with a cup of sake or other drink of choice.

A venerable Japanese confectionery shop founded at the end of the Edo period located in Kyoto City’s Sakyo Ward. The shop is famous for its ajari mochi rice cakes, a popular and standard Kyoto souvenir. Resembling the conical wicker hats worn by ajari, the term for a Tendai Buddhist high priest, these elegant sweets consist of a hearty helping of an sweet bean paste stuffed inside a thin, chewy skin of mochi pounded glutinous rice. The shop’s signature mangetsu, a sweet once officially provided to the Kujo prince clan, is also popular and is only sold on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.

The shop known as the oldest existing yudofu (boiled tofu) store in existence is a ten minute walk from Keage Subway Station, and has been introduced on television and in newspapers. Visitors can relax leisurely on the traditional Japanese seats on the floor and look out on the Japanese garden showing a different beauty with every season. The only tofu dish is yudofu. The homemade tofu using domestic soybean is mellow, rich with a deep taste of soy. This fee-charing, study room-style private library is located a short distance west of the intersection between Imadegawa-dori Street and Shirakawa-dori Street. At the reception counter, choose an open seat; you then pay in accordance with the amount of time you stay. Customers are free to bring in their own food and drink but the library also offers free green tea and sells coffee and black tea at low prices. Customers can freely read the books lining the library's shelves and, excluding a portion of the collection, borrow books as well. You can reserve a seat on Sundays and holidays. Regardless of the day of the week, the library is happily open until midnight. The library is a great place to study or take a break.

This is a Japanese sweets shop in a hidden-away machiya (old townhouse) located a two-minute walk from JR Keihan Tofukuji Station. The pure Japanese-style interior has a relaxing, subdued feel. The shop’s inner garden gets lit up by illuminations at night, and becomes a different kind of magical space by day. Their specialty is “Torori-Warabimochi” (bracken starch dumpling), made from bracken starch from Japan and brown sugar from Okinawa’s Iriomote Island which is kneaded thoroughly with famous Kyoto water. The resulting soft and stretchable dumpling offers a brand-new taste sensation. It is complemented with the refreshingly sweet sauce of Kagawa refined sugar and Tanba black soybean flour. This dumpling is also available as a takeout option.

This is a flea market held on the grounds of Hyakumanben Chionji Temple in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City selling hand-made goods. The market is held on the 15th of every month. In addition to selling handmade everyday items, there is also a variety of homemade bread, cakes and sweets on offer. The market began with only a few stalls but has expanded over the last five years and now exceeds 450 stalls. The stalls in the market are decided by lottery each month, so you may not be able to find the same stall as the month before. Many customers enjoy the market casually seeking a once in a lifetime encounter.

The charming exterior and a counter seat like a sushi shop compliments the simplicity of the rice balls they serve. The rice balls are each made freshly after taking your order using rice cooked in a special iron traditional style rice cooking pot. The popular rice balls are delicious served hot as well as cold. Guests can enjoy their rice balls with a variety of side dishes in the restaurant. There are many fillings to choose from and if you take out three or more rice balls they will be wrapped in bamboo skin.
