    Kyoto Kyoutoshi Higashiyama-ku Kiyomizu 1-294
A famous Buddhist temple located in Higashiyama Ward in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. The temple is said to have been started when the priest Enchin enshrined a thousand-armed statue of Kannon above the Otowa Waterfall in 778. The main temple nave enshrines a standing figure of an eleven-faced Kannon and is built in the elegant Shinden-zukuri style. The Kiyomizu Stage jutting out over the Cliffside offers a sweeping view of the streets of Kyoto and blooming cherry trees, verdant plant life, or autumn foliage depending on the season, making it a popular photo spot. The three channeled Otowa Waterfall is said to provide benefits such as long life and people line up to drink its waters. Bustling with students on a school excursion as well as tourists both domestic and international, the Kiyomizu-dera Temple is one of Kyoto’s most popular tourist sites.

Its great fun watching everyone queueing for these three streams - which one will they want to go for? Apparently you should only choose one!

Inside are colorful “kukuri saru.” Kukuri saru are charms of monkeys with their hands and feet tied, and warn people not to rush towards what they want. If one controls himself against their desire and then prays to the kukuri saru, their wish will be granted. In addition, on the six Koshin days of the year there is “konnyaku dak,” cooked konnyaku (paste made from starch of arum roots). It is said that if one faces north and silently eats three kukuri saru-shaped konnyaku, they will live with sound health.

We had just visited the Kiyomizu Temple and were walking through the Higashiyama area of Kyoto. I happened to look down an alley to my left and saw many colorful balls, hanging like garlands from a...

Komyoin Temple is a sub temple of Tofukuji Temple. Also known as “niji no kokedera” (rainbow moss temple), it is a beautiful temple with thick green moss and white sand blanketing the grounds. In spring there are of course cherry blossoms, and in autumn one can enjoy the changing leaves of Tofuku-ji Temple.

Construction of this large temple was begun in 1236 by the regent Kujo Michiie, who wanted to enshrine Kyoto’s largest monastery. The construction ultimately took 19 years to complete. The temple’s spacious grounds are home to such highlights as Japan’s oldest main temple gate (a designated National Treasure), and a toilet constructed in the Zen style as well as a temple nave decorated with a painting of a dragon on its ceiling (both Important Cultural Properties). Four gardens are distributed to the east, west, north, and south sides of the grounds, and each offers charming but different scenery. The northern garden in particular, with its checkerboard of moss and stones, is a must-see.

    Kyoto Kyoutoshi Higashiyama-ku Kiyomizu Yasaka Kami-cho 388
A Buddhist temple famous for its five tier pagoda called the Yasakano-to located midway between Yasaka Shrine and the Kiyomizu-dera Temple. There are various theories about the origins of the Hokanji Temple, but it is generally believed to have been founded in the Asuka period (593–710) as the guardian temple of the Yasaka clan. The 46 meter tall five tier pagoda is a reconstruction built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. Visitors can go inside the pagoda to view a dais on which are placed figures of Mahavairocana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha, and amoghasiddhi—the Five Perfected Ones; as well as the interior structure of the pagoda and the great central pillar supporting it.

Founded by the priest Kuya in 951, this is temple 17 of the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage (33 temples in the Kinki area containing a statue of Avalokitesvara). The temple possesses a large number of wooden sculptures that represent the Kamakura period including the standing image of Juichimenkannon (eleven-faced Kannon), the temple’s gohonzon or principal object of worship which is designated as a National Treasure, and a standing image of Kuya (an Important Cultural Property). Located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, this is the head temple of the Shingon Chisan sect of Buddhism. The full name of the temple is the Iobuzan Negoro-ji Chishakuin Temple. The temple was originally located on Mt. Negoro in the former Kii Province, but it was burned down by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later rebuilt by head priest Genyu in Higashiyama. The temple stores and protects a number of Momoyama period sliding door paintings, including the Hasegawa Tohaku school Image of Cherries and Image of Maples, which are designated National Treasures. The temple’s garden, a designated Place of Scenic Beauty, is said to have been a favorite of tea ceremony master Sen no Rikyu and is a rare extant example of an early artificial hill and pond-style garden. Visited by a great number of people each year, the garden is particularly beautiful from the end of May to the end of June when the azalea’s come in bloom.

    Kyoto Kyoutoshi Higashiyama-ku Honmachi 15-803
A Rinzai Buddhist temple located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City and one of the Tofukuji Temple’s sub-temples. The temple’s traditional dry landscape garden, said to have been created by Sesshu Toyo, has been famously depicted in ink paintings and the temple is accordingly also known as the “Sesshu Temple.” The temple was founded in the Genko period (1321–1324) by Ichijo Uchitsune to memorialize his father, but after it was destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt in the Genroku period (1688–1704) by Ichijo Kaneteru. Portions of the garden were destroyed in repeated fires and eventually restored by Mirei Shigemori in 1939. The southern “Crane and Tortoise” garden features an elegant representation of the islands of Tsurushima and Kameshima (Crane Island and Tortoise Island) floating in a “sea” of moss.

    東福寺の塔頭。観光客が少なめで、静かに庭園を楽しめました。襖絵もじっくりと鑑賞。恵観ゆかりの茶室も素敵でした。また訪問します。

    Kyoto Kyoto-shi Higashiyama-ku
Legend says this ancient temple was founded in 802. It is called Uta no Nakayama because of the old name of the alley that once linked Seikan-ji Temple and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Kogo, former consort of the Emperor Takakura, became a nun here, and the Houkyouinto tower on the temple grounds was built in memory of her. Standing at the central point gives you a view of the city through a V-notch in the keystone. Nowadays, it's a popular spot to view the fall leaves, and in season it's filled with camera-toting visitors.

I wouldnt visit this place on its own, but as a part of your Kiyomizu-dera experience, its well worth it. From the main hall of Kiyomizu-dera, follow the path toward the childbirth pagoda. Just...

Reiunin Temple, a sub temple of Tofukuji Temple, was constructed in 1390 as a temple of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. It is said that it was the site of a secret meeting in the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate between Saigo Takamori and monk Gessho. Highlights include the Kusen-hakkai-no-niwa garden and Gaun-no-niwa garden.

    Kyoto Kyoto-shi Higashiyama-ku Kiyomizu 1-294
This Jizoin temple faces the Nioh-mon, Kiyomizu-dera Temple's main gate, to the left. It is the 10th temple on the Rakuyo 33 Kannon pilgrimage. In the mid-Meiji period, it was combined with the Zenkoji Nyoraido hall in the Okunoin south garden, resulting in its current configuration. It's three main enshrined images are the principal image of this temple, a standing statue of Jizo-bosatsu, or K?itigarbha, a seated statue of Nyoirin Kannon made in the late Kamakura period, and a Zenkoji-style statue of Amida Nyorai that was the principal image of Zenko-ji Temple. The Kubifuri Jizo (Shaking-head jizo) statue to the right front of the hall has a head that spins 360 degrees, and they say that if you turn it to face the direction your romantic interest lives and pray, your feelings will be returned, and your prayers answered.

    清水寺門前に立つ善光寺堂の右横に祀られていました。 「願い事のある方向に首をまわして拝めば願いが叶えられる」と案内板に記されていましたが、流石に首を触る観光客は見受けられませんでした。

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
