Doi Shibazuke Honpo, located in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward, specializes in tsukemono pickled vegetables. It sells many varieties and combination packs of tsukemono and other popular products. Customers can look through a glass partition to watch the production processes going on in the plant. Groups can make reservations to tour the rooms where the tsukemono are aged. This is a regular spot for my family, but I think given the easy bus service from Kyoto station, it would be good for any foreign visitors. As other posters have said, tsukemono - Japanese pickles...

Kyoto Areas

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
