This stylish cake shop opened in 1998. It pursues originality in everything from the combination of ingredients, the balance of its flavors, and the shapes of its cakes. We recommend their original iramisu, a masterpiece that has remained a perennial favorite since it was first sold in 2002.

This venerable sweets shop was founded in 1832. They sell their famous Oike Senbei from their corner shop on Gokomachi-dori Street just off Oike-dori Avenue. These simple griddle cooked senbei glutinous rice crackers are mildly sweetened with sugar and cooked with a turtle shell pattern. The light, fluffy texture matches the light aroma of soy sauce for an elegant, Kyoto-style luxury. The red label was designed with help from printmaker Shiko Munakata, and they come packed in a handy-sized tin can. They're a popular souvenir from Kyoto because they stand up well to transport.

Kyoto Kyoto-shi Nakagyo-ku Shinkyogoku Shijo Agaru Nakanocho 565
This shop makes and sells London-yaki, which are bite-sized buns made of castella cake filled with white sweet bean paste. As you walk down Shinkyogoku Shopping Street, an enormously popular spot for school trips and inbound tourists, you will hear a pleasant clanging sound: this is the sound of London-yaki being made. The sight of the intricate machinery making them is enough to stop you in your tracks, and you can see crowds of sightseers stopping to watch. These treats contain no dairy, so they can be stored at room temperature for days, even in summer. The fine texture and smooth mouthfeel combined with the gentle sweetness makes it hard to eat just one.

Kyoto Kyoto-shi Nakagyo-ku Nijodori Ogawa Higashi Iru Nishidaikokucho 333-2
This Japanese confectionary has been making treats evoking the breath of the seasons and urban elegance for over 100 years. Look for the massive storefront on the corner of Nijo-dori avenue and Ogawa-dori street. The shop's flagship product, Fukukuri, uses a whole large chestnut wrapped in two layers, one of chestnut paste and another of sweet bean paste, and finished with youkan bean jelly. It looks just like an unshelled chestnut, so it's as fun to look at as it is to eat. The sweetness is just right to let you enjoy the natural taste of the ingredients. Their Yakiimo manju buns, made with Japanese yam, Furosen pouring hot water into the bowl to make kuzuyu, and so on the product of years of experience, are delightfully colorful traditional Kyoto sweets as well.

    Kyoto Nagaokakyo-shi Nagaoka 2-28-40
The Japanese patisserie offers a variety of sweets, but focuses on their old fashioned Takenoko Monaka, a wafer and bamboo shoot snack which has won the gold medal at the National Snack Awards. This local snack uses Nagaokakyo city's specialty bamboo shoots stewed in a sweet broth, with their particular crisp texture and gentle sweetness balanced with the savory, house-made wafer coating. They have three types: Tamba Dainagon red bean, Kyoto Yuzu, and white azuki bean, and their cute round shape is quite popular. Kyoto Maizuru-shi Hama 601
This bakery is about ten minutes' walk from Higashi Maizuru Station in the relaxed atmosphere of Higashi Maizuru Shopping street. They have a huge array of products, from white bread loafs to snack breads, headed up by their Nikujaga Bun with beef, potatoes and konjac noodle, which is endorsed by the Maizuru Tourist Association. Maizuru was the location of the only Naval base on the Sea of Japan side of the country. Those sailors brought back the unforgettable flavor of the beef stew they'd eaten in the United Kingdom, and in the pursuit of that flavor this town became the home of Japan's Nikujaga, a stew of beef and potatoes flavored with soy sauce, sugar, and sesame. The Nikujaga Buns baked every morning are a local flavor you won't find anywhere else.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
