From a sightseeing cruise boat, take in the cherry trees blooming on the Kaizu Osaki Peninsula, counted as one of the beautiful Eight Views of Lake Biwa and also selected for inclusion in the Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots list. Some 800 magnificent Yoshino cherries, spanning everything from 70-year-old trees to saplings representing the next generation, grow along a four-kilometer-long stretch of Lake Biwa's shore, forming a veritable cherry tree tunnel. This cruise makes it possible to fully experience the area's cherry blossoms; onboard a boat, you can enjoy the beauty of the avenue of cherries unaffected by the huge crowds that flock to the site on land, and you can also disembark and walk along a cherry tree arcade for 30 minutes. Advance reservation required.

A Buddhist temple located in Gokashoishibaji-cho, Higashiomi City. The temple was built in 594 by Prince Shotoku. The temple’s name, which means “Stone Horse Temple,” is derived from a legend according to which Prince Shotoku was led up Mt. Kinugasa by a horse; the prince tied to horse to a pine tree and descended down the mountain, and when he returned, the horse had turned into stone and sunk to the bottom of a pond. Today, the main temple building enshrines a wooden signboard with the temple’s name said to have been inscribed by Prince Shotoku’s own hand, and the pine tree to which Prince Shotoku tied the horse.

A Buddhist temple located in Gokasho Kondo-cho, Higashiomi City. The temple was built in 1290 by Kubo, the leading disciple of the great priest Kakunyo and also the grandson of Nasu no Yoichi, who is famous for allegedly having hit, with a single shot of his bow, a folding fan tauntingly placed on a bobbing ship by the opposing side during the Genpei War. The main temple building, built in 1755, is a designated Important Cultural Property.
