    A museum located in Konki-cho, Hikone City. The museum is located on the site of Hikone Castle’s front palace and operates out of a recreation of that now destroyed structure. The museum contains some 45,000 pieces of valuable works of art, handicrafts, and ancient documents handed down for generations in the Ii clan, who once ruled ancient Hikone domain; as well as over 91,000 items relating to Hikone.

    This is a garden with a large central pond and a circular walking trail located northeast of Hikone Castle. It was said to have been built by Ii Naooki, the fourth feudal lord of Hikone domain. This is a famous garden built with every luxury imaginable from the Edo culture—it is designed after a palace garden from the Chinese Emperor Xuanzong of Tang. Buildings such as Rinchikaku, artificial hills of Houshoudai are built as if they project out into the large lake, and trees, shrubs and rocks are cleverly arranged to imitate “Omi Hakkei” (Eight Views of Omi). The illumination is also well worth seeing, which is held in November during the season for autumnal leaves.

    A museum located in Gokasho Tatsuta-cho, Higashiomi City. The museum makes use of videos, dioramas, and exhibits to introduce the history and culture of the Higashiomi area, said to be the birthplace of the famous Omi merchants; as well as the activities and ways of life of the Omi merchants. The Nakaji Yujin Museum on the second floor exhibits Japanese paintings donated by Yujin Nakaji, a Japanese painter connected to the area.

The museum contains exhibits honoring Japanese explorers, with a focus on Eizaburo Nishibori, an explorer and scientist who served as the captain of Japan Antarctic Research Expedition. The museum also offers science experiments and craft making classes for groups and others (interested parties should contact the museum in advance).

    See an outstanding film on Eizaburo Nishibori and exhibits related to his long career. Also a well curated art exhibit of works from Higashiomi and Shiga prefecture during my visit. Leaves me wanting...

    10 minutes from the Hikone Interchange on the Meishin Expressway via National Route 306. This museum is located in Akebono Park Taga and is dedicated to presenting the nature and culture of Taga Town and the surrounding area. The museum's standing exhibition includes the full body skeleton of an Akebono elephant, a variety of elephant which experienced a unique evolution in Japan; the skeleton was discovered in clay in an ancient layer of Lake Biwa dating back 1.8 million years. The museum's exhibits also notably primarily consist of real specimens of creatures which lived amidst the abundant natural beauty of Taga Town, and include various insects, animals, and plants, as well as a 30 thousand-year-old fossil skeleton of a Naumann's elephant. The museum also holds activities and nature watching events.

    町の博物館がこんなに立派だと思わず迷って辿り着きました。あけぼのパーク内にあり、入場料大人200円(町内者は無料)で入れます。当日は小学生の一団が楽しそうに見学してました。アケボノゾウがメインの展示で、琵琶湖の移動の歴史と共に大変勉強になります。裏には公園が広がっておりリフレッシュできます。

    An art museum situated along the Happu Highway in Yamakami-cho, Higashiomi City. The museum’s collection consists of works of art gathered by Reizo Zushi, founder of the Hitomi clothing company. The museum’s artworks include ukiyoe by such Hiroshige and woodblock prints by Shiko Munakata, but its collection of pieces by potter Bernard Leach is the largest in Japan and these make up the core of the facility’s standing exhibition.

    通りがかりに入りました。とても面白い展示物を見る事ができます。料金は大人500円、小中学生は無料でした。

    An astronomical observatory situated along National Route 306 in Taga, Taga Town, Inukami County, Shiga Prefecture. Japan’s first privately owned and operated astronomical observatory, facilities include a 60 cm main reflecting telescope, a variety of smaller telescopes, and a Schmidt camera. The facility also has displays containing meteorites, celestial globes, and a star map from China dating back to the Southern Song dynasty. The facility also holds regular events such as stargazing meets.

    毎週土曜日に開館されており、隕石や星の話や太陽、金星、一等星を、天体望遠鏡で実際見る事もできました。気がついたら約1時間経過していました。しかも昼間は、無料なので驚きです。

    A mountain stream fishing facility located in Kozuhata-cho, Higashiomi City. Located in a beautiful natural ravine, visitors can enjoy authentic mountain stream fishing here. In the facility’s artificial steam area, perfect even for beginners, visitors can fish for char and Biwa trout. There’s also a separate area where visitors can try catching fish by hand! In the adjoining roofed barbecue house, visitors can also cook and eat the fish they’ve caught or order Japanese black beef barbecue sets and dishes made with char (reservation required three days in advance; for parties of two or larger).

The museum contains exhibits on the giant kites of Higashiomi, including miniature replicas of particularly outstanding past examples and the actual 100 Tatamijiki Higashiomi Odako, the largest kite in Japan. Other exhibits include some 500 kites from around Japan and 100 from around the world.

    A public park located in Noguchi-cho and Nukazuka-cho, Higashiomi City. The park was created to commemorate the culture of the “Man’yoshu” ancient poetry anthology in the area. Facilities include monuments inscribed with poems from the anthology, a huge relieve depicting the “Hunt of Gamouno” as described in the poems of Prince Oama and Princess Nukata, and a “Man’yo Botanical Garden” planted with some 100 varieties of plants which appear in the anthology.

    About five minutes from the Kotosanzan Smart Interchange off the Meishin Expressway via Prefectural Route 220, this municipal water park is equipped with a 25 meter-long main pool, and a water slide and a children's pool. It also has a walking pool with a circumference of 80 meters, a Jacuzzi, beneficial for relaxation, a reclining zone, and a body warming room. There are other wellness rooms include training and fitness rooms. The facility is open all year round and various programs including swimming classes are offered.

    A tourist fruit farm located in Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture. The farm primarily grows strawberries, and from April to mid-May, visitors can enjoy all-you-can-eat strawberry picking in the farm's greenhouses. All-you-can-eat strawberry picking is reservation-only and lasts 30 minutes. The strawberry varieties the farm grows include Akihime, Beni Hoppe, and Kaorino. In addition to locals, visitors from far and wide come here seeking the farm's generally large and highly sweet strawberries. The farm also has a wholesale shop selling strawberries as well as vegetables, flowers, and other fruits which can be purchased to take home as souvenirs.

    This tourist fruit farm is located in Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture. The farm grows Japanese pears, grapes, and a variety of other fruits on its 8,000 square meter grounds, and visitors can enjoy all-you-can-eat fruit. The farm's Japanese pears, pollinated by honeybees and grown with organic fertilizer, are exceptionally sweet and juicy. Grape varieties grown by the farm include Himrod and Beni Izu. In addition to Japanese pear-only and grape-only all-you-can-eat plans, the farm offers a Japanese pear and grape all-you-can-eat plan, giving visitors the chance to savor the flavors of autumn to their heart's content. The farm also offers fresh-picked Japanese pear compote making and beeswax candle making activities.

    愛荘町歴史文化博物館に『ふるさと展』を観に行ってきました。 展示物の説明も丁寧でわかり易く常設展も興味深いものでした。 桜の時期は過ぎていて残念でしたが回廊から見る庭も手入れがゆき届いて綺麗でした。 街中から外れた所にあるせいか、ゆったりと自分のペースで楽しめるので今の時期、特にオススメです。 すぐ隣に金剛輪寺があるので今度はそちらにも行こうと思っています。

Visitors to Shiga prefecture are almost always hopping east across the prefectural border from Kyoto, and they are almost certainly Lake Biwa-bound. Covering an area of 670 square kilometers, Lake Biwa makes up the bulk of Shiga prefecture, with beautiful lakeside paths that offer myriad walking and cycling opportunities, connecting a string of museums, shrines, and picturesque views that finally lead you to Hikone Castle on the eastern side of the lake.
