The Omi merchants had faith in this Shinto shrine from the days of old. According to tradition, the Emperor Seimu established it to worship Oshima Okami in 131 AD. The three Shinto gods now enshrined there are Hontawake-no-Mikoto, Okinagatarashihime-no-mikoto, and Himekami. The shrine holds two fire festivals: The Sagicho Festival in March, consisting of a competition where parishioners make portable shrines covered with talismans, and the Hachiman Festival in April where they burn an enormous 10-meter-tall torch.

This shrine is beautiful and worth stopping by. Best of all no entrance and is well kept. Restroom is across the street from the shrine. Many Japanese people come here for short prayers. We took a...

52 minutes from the Hikone Interchange on the Meishin Expressway via National Route 8. Records state this Tendai Buddhist temple was founded around 1,400 years ago by Prince Shotoku for a mermaid, making it the only such temple tied to a mermaid legend in the country. The 32nd temple on the Saigoku 33 Kannon pilgrimage, it has been popular since the Heian period for gracing worshippers with fortune in all things and luck in finding love and marriage. In 1993, the temple's main temple building and principal object of worship were destroyed in a fire, but these were restored in 2004. The current principal object of worship is a seated thousand-armed, thousand-eyed statue of the bodhisattva Kannon crafted entirely of Indian sandalwood. Lucky visitors to the temple just might encounter Kuritaro, a cat who lives on the grounds.

This museum, located in Taga-cho, Omihachiman City, contains exhibits on Hachiman roof tiles, a local industry which developed with the building of Hachimanyama Castle in 1585 by Toyotomi Hidetsugu. Here visitors can view gold leaf and eave-end roof tiles excavated from the ruins of Hidetsugu’s residence, decorative ridge-end gargoyle roof tiles and tile figures from the Edo period, and gargoyle roof tiles from studios and workshops situated along the Hachiman-bori Canal.

Very expensive entry fee ($10 / 1,000 yen) to see some roof-tiles. If it was more friendly fee, I think you would have seen more visitors.
