    A Buddhist temple located in Katsuragawa Bomura-cho, Otsu City. The temple was built as a dojo on the Kaihogyo pilgrimage route by the head priest of the Enryakuji Temple in the Heian period. A ritual taiko drum performance and dance called the Taiko Mawashi is held at the temple for pilgrims walking the route on Mt. Hiei each year on July 18.

    鯖街道をドライブ中にたまたま見つけた紅葉の名所です。 明王谷にかかる三宝橋の辺りの紅葉は見応えがあり、隠れた穴場ですね。

    A Buddhist temple located in Maibara, Maibara City. The temple was originally founded as the Beisenji temple by Sasaki Doyo, military commissioner of Omi, in the distant Nanboku-cho period. The temple’s rock garden is a designated National Place of Scenic Beauty and, with a reservation made at least five days in advances, visitors can enjoy a special Japanese Buddhist vegetarian meal while taking in a view of the garden.

Located on the land where the great monk Saicho founded the Enryakuji in 788, the grounds encompass various important structures centering on the Konpon Chudo, the overarching main temple and a designated National Treasure.

    A two-minute walk from the Shiminhoru-mae bus stop, and a 15-minute drive from the Ritto Interchange. This museum is situated on the grounds of Moriyama Citizen Sports Park and introduces the history of Genji fireflies in Moriyama City. The museum also has an artificial breeding room where firefly larvae are raised in a large tank, and a river outside where visitors can take their time and watch fireflies. Genji fireflies can be seen in the area from mid-May to the middle of June. During firefly season, the museum is also open at night.

    ホタルについては、飛んでいるのは知っているし見たこともありますが、その生態などをきっちり勉強したことはありませんでした。ホタルを通して守山市の魅力も再発見できました。

    A museum located in Okubo, Hino Town, Gamo County, Shiga Prefecture. The museum operates out of a residence which once belonged to Omi Hino merchant Yamanaka Hyoemon. Its standing exhibit presents the history of the Omi Hino merchants from the Edo period to the pre-war period. The museum also holds several special exhibits throughout the year.

    日野町中心部の裏道に立地している。入館料300円。 日野商人であった山中兵右衛門の邸宅。1936年築ということなので、それほど古い建物ではない。館内には日野商人が使用していた道具などが展示されているとのことだが、休館日だったので中に入ることはできなかった。

    A science museum situated along the Kogan Road in Honmaru-cho, Otsu City. The museum’s exhibits look at themes such as the natural environment of Lake Biwa and the fundamental concepts of science. There’s also a planetarium which uses digital projectors to present the entire night sky, and an astronomy dome equipped with a large refracting telescope. In addition, the museum holds exciting science demonstrations each week on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays which allow visitors to perform experiments and create scientific tools.

    入場料が安く、駐車場も無料なのでお財布に優しいです。安いので展示もこじんまりとしてますが、子供が小さいこともありいろんな実験展示も楽しんでました。 プラネタリウムでは地元成安造形大学とコラボした素人感あふれる「ぎょしゃ座」の神話アニメが見れました。地元密着企画で良いと思います。 が、はやぶさが「M2-A」ロケットでうちあがり、リュウグウの砂を「搾取」して、何「憶」キロもの距離を進んだという誤字だら...

    A canal located in Miyauchi-cho, Omihachiman City. The canal was once used by Toyotomi Hidetsugu, nephew to the great samurai Toyotomi Hideyoshi, to further the movement of goods inland from Lake Biwa and bring prosperity to the town surrounding his home of Hachimanyama Castle. From the 1950s to the 60s, the canal was used for domestic wastewater and became seriously polluted, but thanks to the cleaning and preservation efforts of local residents, the state of the canal is now much improved. Today, the canal is a sightseeing destination renowned for its atmospheric scenery and is frequently used to film period dramas.

    This museum is located in Tsujimachi, Yasu City. The museum contains exhibits on the history and casting methods of dotaku Yayoi period bell-shaped bronze vessels, with a focus on the 24 Oiwayama dotaku excavated at Oiwayama in 1881 and 1962. The museum also contains exhibits on the folk customs and history of Yasu, such as a model recreation of the Nagahara Palace (excluding during special exhibitions and exhibition changeover periods).

    銅鐸が展示してあり、特に製造方法などが学べます。古墳好きにはたまりません。近隣の古墳公園とセットで訪れることをおすすめします。

    A museum located in Kunitomo-cho, Nagahama City. The museum contains exhibits on the history of Kunitomo, an area which flourished as a center for “teppo” gun production from shortly after their introduction to Japan during the Warring States period through to the Edo period. Visitors can see exhibits on the Kunitomo teppo gun production process and a recreation of what a Kunitomo blacksmith’s workshop looked like, as well as real matchlock teppo guns. The museum also has exhibits on engineers and cultured persons born in Kunitomo such as Kunitomo Ikkansai, who conducted astronomical observations using his own home-built reflecting telescope; and tea ceremony master Tsuji Sohan.

    一度は行ってみたいところでした。駅前からバスに乗って資料館へ。朝一番という事で1時間余楽しみました。展示資料はそれほど多くはありませんでしたが、鉄砲の里という事で、そこここに立つ道標にも歴史を感じました。資料館の館長さんも気さくな方でお話を伺い、グッツも沢山仕入れました。

    A museum located in 1 Chome Nakanuma Imazu-cho, Takashima City. The museum contains exhibits on the “Biwako Shuko no Uta” (“The Lake Biwa Circumnavigation Song”), which was created in the Taisho period when students in the Aquatic Department at the Third Higher School (now Kyoto University) came to circumnavigate Lake Biwa and stayed in Imazu. The museum introduces the creators of the song and also has a corner where visitors can listen to various singers performing the song.

    令和2年から今津東コミュニティセンター内に移りました。小口太郎が京都大学ボート部時代に歌を発表、吉田千秋が曲を作りました。この曲は多くの歌手により歌われましたが、加藤登紀子氏による歌は大ヒットとなりました。無料で入れます。

    創祀年代は不祥だが、959年(天徳3年)に勧請と伝えられる古社です。楼門は、東向きに建つ三間一戸の門で、滋賀県下の楼門としては最古のものです。何組かが七五三でお参りをしていました。池には大きな鯉が泳いでいました。栗東市指定文化財で三社殿や観音堂には十一面観音立像・脇仏二体が祀られています。

    A museum located in Oyori-cho, Nagahama City. The museum has a local culture hall which focuses on three generations of the Azai clan during the Warring States period and contains exhibits on the clan in general as well as the three famous Azai sisters. There’s also a facility which contains exhibits on the cultivation of silkworms practiced by the Azai as well as Kusano blacksmithing; and the home of a late Edo period village headman moved to the museum site and restored to give viewers a taste of what life looked like back then.

    湖北地方の歴史を学ぶことができる。戦争はやはりつらいものだと痛感させられる。近くを立ち寄ったら是非訪れてほしい。

    大洞山の中腹にあるお寺で、彦根城の守護のために江戸時代に建てられたものとの事。重文となっている弁財天堂は小規模ながら東照宮の影響を感じる部分があります。山門からの彦根城を含む景色がとても美しかったです。

    A Buddhist temple located in Ichino Koka-cho, Koka City. The temple’s principal object of worship is a seated, 11 headed figure of Kanzeon Bodhisattva; the largest such figure in Japan, it is said to have been carved by the great monk Saicho and is only unveiled to the general public once every 33 years. The shrine also came to be known for having been visited by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro to pray when he went to subdue the bandits in the Suzuka Mountains; the origins of the ritual sumo matches held on the grounds each year on October 18 date back to the sumo matches held by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro’s retainers.

    "This Shingon Chisan Buddhist temple is located a five-minute drive from JR Makino Station. The ninth temple on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, it is widely known as the ""Osaki Kannon."" In addition to being able to see Lake Biwa from the observatory in front of the main temple building, some of the temple's many highlights include the Amidado hall, which was built with wood which is still stained with blood from the battle which led to the fall of Azuchi Castle; a statue said to have been created by Prince Shotoku; and two ancient pines called the Senkanmatsu and the Bentenmatsu. In the spring, cherry trees growing on the grounds come into beautiful bloom. As the temple is located a 30-minute walk from the nearest bus station, visitors are encouraged to rent a bicycle at the train station."

    一般而已。位於海津大崎,可能不是櫻花季節的關係,很冷清,完全沒有遊人,也像不開放一樣,雖然仍可以自由參觀。

    A museum located in Nishioji, Hino Town, Gamo County, Shiga Prefecture. Once a mansion belonged to Yamanaka Shokichi, a Hino merchant who built his fortune through sake brewing in what is today Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture at the end of the Edo period, the palatial estate is now open to the public. Inside, there are exhibits on the history and culture of the Hino area. The museum also offers a traditional period meal experience (advance reservation required).

    守貞カフェと馬見岡綿向神社の観光の際に立ち寄った。馬見岡綿向神社の駐車場から参道までの間にある。入館料は大人300円(2022年4月現在)。外見はつつましやかであるが、中は立派な邸宅であった。浴室のタイルやステンドグラス風の窓、など建物は繊細かつ細工が細部に施されたものであった。庭は石の使い方もダイナミックで新しい息吹を感ずる立派な庭であった。

    A designated National Historic Site located in Ibe Kohoku-cho, Nagahama City. The castle belonged to the Azai clan and is known for its connection to Chacha, Hatsu, and Go, three famous sisters born between the samurai lord Azai Nagamasa and Oichi, the younger sister of the mighty lord Oda Nobunaga. After the downfall of the Azai clan, the castle temporarily passed into the possession of the great lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi but was later abandoned. An archeological excavation conducted decades ago discovered ruins believed to have been the castle’s palatial residence and storehouses.

    "This museum is located 10 minutes from the Nagahama Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway. The place where the museum stands is believed to be the site of the residence where Warring States period samurai and military commander Ishida Mitsunari was born. The museum displays ancient texts, armor, and picture scroll panels connected to or concerning Ishida, and visitors can also see a photograph of Ishida's skull unearthed at the Sangenin Temple on the grounds of Kyoto's Daitokuji Temple. In addition, a bronze statue on the grounds which may be freely viewed was created based on this skull. A stone monument on the grounds is inscribed with characters which read ""The birthplace of Ishida Jibusho"" (his official court title). As the museum is not always open, prospective visitors should call in advance to confirm museum hours."

    友人が御朱印を集めているので行きました。会館内は地区の方々が開いているようでした。三成はともかく西軍の総大将となり西軍に側の武将の小さい看板などがありました。それから、石田一族の墓や神社もあります。石田三成ファンだったらおススメします。この会館は平日に行くと半日で終わる時もあるので、ちょっと気を付けたいです。

    An art museum located on the grounds of Nagara Park in Kozeki-cho, Otsu City. Adjoined by a studio, the museum contains works by Japanese painter Setsuko Mitsuhashi, who died prematurely at the age of 35 in 1975. The museum also has a creation space for making paintings and crafts.

Visitors to Shiga prefecture are almost always hopping east across the prefectural border from Kyoto, and they are almost certainly Lake Biwa-bound. Covering an area of 670 square kilometers, Lake Biwa makes up the bulk of Shiga prefecture, with beautiful lakeside paths that offer myriad walking and cycling opportunities, connecting a string of museums, shrines, and picturesque views that finally lead you to Hikone Castle on the eastern side of the lake.
