    A sake brewery situated along National Route 303 in Kinomoto Kinomoto-cho, Nagahama City. This long-standing brewery boasts over 450 years of history, having been established in the distant Tenbun era, and brews Shichihonyari, renowned sake known to have been a favorite of the artist Rosanjin. At the present time, the brewery does not offer tours.

    木ノ本の古い街並みにある老舗の酒蔵。七本槍の純米を購入したが、なかなかの辛口。JR木ノ本駅から徒歩10分もかからずアクセスも良い。

    A 10-minute walk from JR Kusatsu Station. This longstanding sake company, established in 1874, can be reached by following the Tokaido Highway a short distance southwest from the Kusatsujuku Kaido Koryukan. The company was founded by the Ota family, whose members had served as barrier keepers for generations in Kusatsu, after the abolition of the han system. From the start, the company has made sakes using Omi rice, and today the company makes a wide array of alcoholic beverages, including shochus, wines, and liqueurs, in addition to Dokan, a brand of seishu refined sakes inspired by the famous Ota family samurai commander. The brand's Wataribune is particularly recommended. During the off season, visitors can tour the company's brewery with an advance reservation.

    A sake brewery located in Nishihayashiguchi Minakuchi-cho, Koka City. The brewery makes Yamahai-jikomi (natural yeast with no mashing) and Ginjo-jikomi (high quality, low fermentation) sakes and its products have received high acclaim at the Annual Japan Sake Awards and other national and international contests. Tours of the brewery, which has been in operation since the Meiji period, are available and visitors can taste sakes and purchase limited edition sakes in the brewery’s shop. The shop also sells limited edition sakes by volume once a month.

    旧東海道を石部から歩いてきて、水口に入ったところにあり、休憩と試飲で立ち寄りました。創業は大正時代ですが、江戸から続く酒蔵の雰囲気を出しています。歩きだったのでお手頃サイズを購入しました。

    A 20-minute walk from JR Makino Station. This longstanding sake brewery, established in 1877, is located near the Kaizu Sanku bus stop. Situated on the northwest shore of Lake Biwa, the brewery continues to make choice sakes using locally-grown Yamada Nishiki rice. The brewery's Chikubushima seishu refined sake brand, produced for local consumption, is quite popular; the brewery also sells autumn-only hiyaoroshi sake, a sake cake created in collaboration with a confectionary shop, and more. The brewery's Kinmon sake is a staple for both momentous and sad events.

    A sake brewery located in Kinomoto Kinomoto-cho, Nagahama City. The brewery was founded in 1532. The brewery makes sakes such as the Hokkoku Kaido refined sake using specially cultivated Tamasakae rice grown primarily with organic fertilizer and reduced agricultural chemicals, and Yamada Nishiki rice grown locally with no agricultural chemicals. The brewery also makes Kuwazake—sake made with mulberry leaves.

    An eight-minute walk from Kosei Station on the JR Kusatsu Line. This longstanding sake company brewery stands in between Minakuchi-shuku and Ishibe-shuku, two old post station towns situated along the former Tokaido Highway which once served as a key transportation hub connecting the eastern and western parts of the country. Using underground spring water from the Suzuka Mountains and supreme sake rice grown on the Omi Plain, known for its exceptional rice growing conditions, the company's signature Miyosakae brand of authentic sakes are fermented and stored entirely at low temperatures and are renowned for their unbelievably delicious flavor. The company's new Kitajima brand, meanwhile, is a back to basics series of sakes made according to the traditional kimoto-zukuri method, the origin of all other sake making methods, and are notable for their smooth and intense flavor. Visitors to Shiga prefecture are almost always hopping east across the prefectural border from Kyoto, and they are almost certainly Lake Biwa-bound. Covering an area of 670 square kilometers, Lake Biwa makes up the bulk of Shiga prefecture, with beautiful lakeside paths that offer myriad walking and cycling opportunities, connecting a string of museums, shrines, and picturesque views that finally lead you to Hikone Castle on the eastern side of the lake.
