  • Omi Myoren Park

    A public park located in Naka-cho, Moriyama City. The “Omi Myoren” lotuses which bloom on Myoren Pond in the park are a variety of lotus believed to have been brought back to Japan from China during the Heian period by Ennin, chief priest of the Enryakuji Temple. The flowers bloom in the thousands from July to August. These flowers, together with the pond itself, have been designated a Natural Monument by the prefecture. The Omi Myoren Lotus Park Museum is located nearby in the park.

    An outdoor activity facility located in Kitakomatsu, Otsu City. The facility has tent sites with cookhouses and a lodging house with a conference room. There’s also an astronomical observatory with a planetarium and telescope, a studio where visitors can make yakisugi handicrafts, a playground and obstacle course with a 72-meter-long slide, and a 15-meter-high climbing wall (short training course required before use).

    A public park located at the foot of Mt. Hachiman in Miyauchi-cho, Omihachiman City. The summit of the mountain is a 20-minute walk from the park. The park also has a statue of the samurai lord Toyotomi Hidetsugu, who built Hachimanyama Castle and the surrounding town, creating the foundations for the development of the region. The park is also a renowned destination for flower viewing in spring.

    A swimming beach situated along the Koshu Road in Shimoogawa Adogawa-cho, Takashima City. A one kilometer long stretch of white sands and pine trees, neighboring facilities include a campground. The beach is also the landing site for the Hot Air Balloon Lake Biwa Crossing event held each year in early December.

    A swimming beach located on the right bank of the mouth of the Echi River in Shingai-cho, Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture. Known for its clean and shallow waters, the beach is a popular destination for families. The beach is also blessed with lovely scenery consisting of white stands and continuous rows of pine trees. During the swimming season, the beach bustles with families.
  • Maibara Omi Haniwa Museum

    A museum adjoining the Maibara City Library in Godo, Maibara City. The museum was opened to exhibit reproductions of the Haniwa clay figures which have been unearthed through archeological excavations in the area. The museum was remodeled in recent years, adding a multipurpose exhibition space. In addition to exhibiting Haniwa, the museum also holds art and photo exhibitions.

    A public park located in Aburahi Koka-cho, Koka City. Facilities include a campground, cooking building, and training rooms, as well as a river water slide. The park’s plaza has a no reservations required barbecue area (note that the park does not offer barbecue equipment rentals).

    A park located on the upper reaches of the Ishida River in Tsunogawa Imazu-cho, Takashima City. The park has four campsites in forest and shore areas, a tree house, roofed barbecue ground, and more. There is also live bait fishing pond and a fly and lure fishing pond where visitors can catch rainbow trout and other fish.

    A public park located close to Yokkaichi Station in Matsuo-cho, Higashiomi City. The park has an observatory with a sweeping view of the city. Some 1,000 Yoshino cherries also grow on the grounds, and the park is a popular cherry blossom viewing destination in spring.

    A blueberry farm located in Nakatara, Maibara City. From early July to mid-September, visitors can enjoy picking blueberries here. The adjoining Blueberry Chaya café serves items such as shaved ice covered with a special blueberry sauce. The farm also sells souvenirs and gifts like blueberry jam, blueberry sauce, and blueberry juice.

    A swimming beach located in 3 Chome Imakatata, Otsu City. The southernmost of all the swimming beaches on Lake Biwa, this beach is known for its clean waters. The “Kojo Goza-bashiri Taikai” competition is also held here in July and August; the contest involves attempting to run across a rush mat spread on the surface of the lake.

    About five minutes from the Kotosanzan Smart Interchange off the Meishin Expressway via Prefectural Route 220, this municipal water park is equipped with a 25 meter-long main pool, and a water slide and a children's pool. It also has a walking pool with a circumference of 80 meters, a Jacuzzi, beneficial for relaxation, a reclining zone, and a body warming room. There are other wellness rooms include training and fitness rooms. The facility is open all year round and various programs including swimming classes are offered.

    A 10-minute walk from Shigaraki Kohgen Railway Shigaraki Station. This gallery, situated along National Route 307, is operated by Yasubeigama, a family-owned pottery studio now in its fifth generation. The gallery is filled with pieces by father Yasumasa Okuda and his sons Yasuyuki and Masamichi. The pieces on display span everything from old-fashioned Ko-Shigaraki ware to modern styles and primarily consist of tableware as well as flower vases and donabe earthenware pots. The gallery's selection includes plates, cups, and other tableware made using a unique glaze developed by Yasumasa and created in a distinctive, modern style which is not bound by the traditional conventions of Shigaraki ware. Perfect for setting off cuisine, many restaurants order their tableware from the gallery.

    "15 minutes from the Shigaraki Interchange on the Shin-Meishin Expressway via National Route 307. This shop presents and sells pieces by Shigaraki ceramic artisans. The shop carries a wide and diverse selection of pottery tableware and decorations by young artisans which are stylish, refreshing, and well-suited to modern sensibilities. The shop adjoins a spacious gallery and holds solo exhibitions once a month. The shop also has a ""one tatami mat gallery"" the size of a single tatami mat which artists can apply to use four around a month at a time."

Visitors to Shiga prefecture are almost always hopping east across the prefectural border from Kyoto, and they are almost certainly Lake Biwa-bound. Covering an area of 670 square kilometers, Lake Biwa makes up the bulk of Shiga prefecture, with beautiful lakeside paths that offer myriad walking and cycling opportunities, connecting a string of museums, shrines, and picturesque views that finally lead you to Hikone Castle on the eastern side of the lake.
