An observatory located midway along the Pearl Road following the coastline. Located on top of 162 meter tall Mt. Hakoda, visitors can enjoy an impressive panorama encompassing the Chita Peninsula and Cape Daio. On clear days Mt. Fuji is also visible. The observatory also has a café and restaurant selected as offering one of the 30 best views in all Japan. There’s also a shop selling local specialty products and a light meal corner where visitors can enjoy popular Ouchiyama soft serve ice cream.

When we told the staff at our hotel that we were going to be driving along the Pearl Road, they mentioned stopping here. Im glad they did as otherwise, since its a bit of a turnoff from the main...

    Mie Toba Shima-shi
"Prefectural Route 128 connecting Toba City and Shima City in Mie Prefecture, known as the ""Pearl Road,"" is a scenic seaside driving course. Visitors can even watch the sun rise from the Pacific Ocean early in the morning, and the Toba Observatory situated along the road is known for its particularly spectacular scenery. The road is only open early in the morning on New Year's Day, and on this day many visitors come here seeking to watch their first sunrise of the new year."
  • Yoroizaki Lighthouse
    Travel / Tourism
    Mie Pref. Tobashi Kuzakichou 254-2
This limestone lighthouse was built on the edge of Kuzaki. The “oyashio” and “kuroshio” currents meet in the surrounding area, making for treacherous waters, so this lighthouse was built to protect fishing vessels. The interior is not accessible, but visitors can view the sea from the structure. Right nearby is a rocky stretch called “Yoroizaki,” from which it gets its name. Legend has it that the name “Yoroizaki” was chosen when Yamahito no Mikoto, seeking the place where Amaterasu was enshrined, visited Kuzaki and removed his yoroi (meaning armor) on the promontory.
  • Ounoura-ohashi Bridge
    Travel / Tourism
    Mie Pref. Tobashi Uramurachou
The Ounoura-ohashi Bridge, which links Imaura, Uramura Town of the Pearl Road Seaside Line with Honura, is 196 meters long with arches and was completed in 1973. It is 30 minutes from the Toba bus center, and you can reach the bridge immediately upon getting off at the Imaura stop. The blue sea and white bridge make a wonderful contrast, and it’s considered one of Toba’s 10 most scenic spots. The bridge also provides a view of Ogura Island and Omura Island, and the “oyster rafts” surrounding them in Ounoura Bay make many passersby stop and stare.

It is a 261-meter-long wooden path and offers a wonderful view of the sprawling sea and Sakate Island. There are many benches set up as well so that you can take your time. It received the “Good Design Award” in 2005 and has become on of Toba’s main tourist spots.

Mie Areas

around-area-map

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
