This famous spot in Ise City, Mie Prefecture is a 15-minute walk from JR Futaminoura Station and featured in one of Utagawa Hiroshige's Ukiyo-e prints. Futami Okitama Shrine is famous for the Meoto Iwa Rocks, said to bestow the boons of prosperity and safety at home and the good fortune of Sarutahiko no Okami, the god enshrined there. The two larger and smaller boulders act as the torii gate usually found at shrine entrances, and the image of them as a pair has led to them being called the Married Couple Rocks. People often pray here for marital happiness and finding the right partner, and from May to July you can see the sunrise, a sign of the season. Futamiura Beach Resort and Sea Paradise are both nearby.

This memorial museum in Ueno Park in Iga City is dedicated to the famous poet, Matsuo Basho. With financial aid from Kanbe Mannosuke the museum was opened in 1959. On display in the museum you'll find writings and poems in Basho's own handwriting including his will as well as source materials relating to Japanese renga and haikai poetry. There is also a light up bulletin board that shows the routes of Basho's five journeys. Special exhibitions are held four times a year.

We enjoyed our visit here. The curator we met was extremely friendly and eager to share about Basho. He took time to personally show us the period clothes Basho would wear and provided hand outs for...

This historic residence and medical clinic about three-minutes on foot from Toba Station is where poet Irako Seihaku passed his time in Toba from the Meiji Period until the early Showa Period. This covered 22 years, from when he was posted to Toba Town's Ohama in 1922 until he moved to what is now Taiki Town in Watarai County. The buildings that survive are the same as they were back then, giving visitors a chance to take in a simple wooden house from Japan's past. They also hold exhibitions related to Irako Seihaku that you can view at your leisure. There's a beautiful and soothing view from the second floor.

This store is adjacent to JR Matsusaka Station. It is known for its wide range of products ranging from food to accessories. They sell Matsusaka beef that they'll ship regionally, famous Matsusaka sweets, local cotton, marine products, and merchandise featuring a local character known as Chachamo. For a shop of its size, it has plenty to choose from and is perfect for your Mie and Matsusaka souvenir shopping. Lots of visitors stop by while waiting for the train, and the parking lot in front of the station makes it easy if you're coming by car.

    JR松阪駅と同じ駅舎、並びといったところでしょうか。お店そのものはお土産屋さんです。私自身は入店後すぐに牛肉コーナーへ、さすがに高いです。他にもいろいろ有ります。

This natural day-use hot spring is on the premises of the Roadside Station Iitaka-eki. It's a warm and open facility where the scent of wood follows you wherever you go. Both the outdoor and indoor baths look out on the Kushida River and Iitaka's natural surroundings. While it's a Roadside Station, it has an impressive 11 baths and a soothing atmosphere that both children and adults can relax and enjoy. Their Akayuwa-no-Yu is a wood heated bath that's open to men on odd numbered days and women on even numbered days. Tsubone-no-Yu has a reclining bath and runs on a schedule opposite to Akayuwa-no-Yu. They're closed on Wednesdays.

This Shinto shrine is one of the shrines in the Naiku inner shrine area of the Ise Jingu shrine. The shrine is dedicated to Konohananosakuyabime-no-Mikoto, daughter of Oyamatsumi-no-Kami. The shrine was built to celebrate the story of Konohananosakuyabime-no-Mikoto safely giving birth to three fire gods amidst a raging inferno. In turn, the shrine is seen by locals as a guardian shrine of conception, safe childbirth, and protection from evil and misfortune.

One of the four associated shrines of Outer Ise Shrine, this shrine is in front of the main shrine to the left of the Kameishi boulder. Like the Kazahinomi-no-miya associated shrine of the Inner Ise Shrine this shrine is dedicated to the gods Shinatsuhiko-no-Mikoto and Shinatobe-no-Mikoto who govern the winds. Originally just a small shrine around a Japanese cedar, after the Mongolian army was repulsed by the kamikaze (divine wind) it was elevated to the status of associated shrine. As the newest of the associated shrines it is also fourth in rank.

"The name of this ancient Shinto shrine is listed in the shrine registry of the Engi-shiki, an ancient book of laws and customs through which we know about the system of national government in Japan during the Heian period. The shrine is dedicated to the god Omura-no-Kami, listed as ""Ikobayawake-no-Mikoto"" in the ""Kojiki,"" one of Japan's oldest historical chronicles. The shrine is said to provide protection from earthquakes. There is a sacred stone enshrined on the grounds to the west of the front shrine called the ""Keystone"" which is said to extend deep underground, holding down the giant catfish that is thought to cause earthquakes according to Japanese mythology. During the shrine's annual fall festival held in November, the stone catfish in front of the Keystone is loaded onto a traditional parade cart and paraded around the Ao district along with a portable shrine."

This facility a one-minute walk from Kintetsu Yamada Line's Saiku Station lets visitors experience the various aspects of Japan's Heian Period, including its culture, technologies, games, and more. You can take commemorative photographs wearing an authentic Heian Period ceremonial kimono, and they have plenty of settings for great shots. One of these is a palanquin you can get in like the ones that used to be reserved for the Emperor, Empress, and the shrine maidens of Ise Jingu Shrine. You can also get a feel for the Heian period with games that were popular back then like sugoroku board games, kemari (a sort of kick ball), and kaiawase (a shell matching game). Their exhibitions and activities change throughout the year according to the season, so there are lots of experiences you can only get there.

This unagi eel restaurant with a lantern marked with the characters for charcoal grilled is located in the Ugata, Ago-cho area of Shima City, Mie Prefecture. Every morning, they slowly grill a fresh Japanese eel cut open that day over high-grade charcoal to seal in the savoriness, and the surface becomes crisp while the inside is soft and fluffy. The chemistry between it and the slightly sweet secret sauce is amazing. The chef's recommendation is the unagi-don joju (high class bowl of rice topped with grilled eel). This dish consists of four pieces of plump and savory eel that are large enough together to completely cover the rice it is placed on. With a spacious Japanese style tatami room, the restaurant is recommended for eating with families.
