This memorial is 15 minutes on foot from Kintetsu Ise-Wakamatsu Station, and about 10 minutes by car from Shiroko Station. The facility tells the story Kodayu Daikokuya, a castaway in Russia during the Edo period. He was the first Japanese person to bring back information about the area he spent time in, gaining the attention of many politicians and scholars and contributing greatly to studies of the West. The memorial houses items like a Russian text written by Kodayu, personal letters of the Russian envoy, his travel journal, and other old documents. Rather than a permanent exhibition, they mainly hold planned and seasonal special exhibitions.

This memorial museum in Ueno Park in Iga City is dedicated to the famous poet, Matsuo Basho. With financial aid from Kanbe Mannosuke the museum was opened in 1959. On display in the museum you'll find writings and poems in Basho's own handwriting including his will as well as source materials relating to Japanese renga and haikai poetry. There is also a light up bulletin board that shows the routes of Basho's five journeys. Special exhibitions are held four times a year.

We enjoyed our visit here. The curator we met was extremely friendly and eager to share about Basho. He took time to personally show us the period clothes Basho would wear and provided hand outs for...

This facility is about 20 minutes by car from JR and Kintetsu Iseshi Station. A portion has been restored based on the Shinzo Kobayashi Yakusho-no-Zu (Plans for the New Kobayashi Office), a blueprint for reconstructing the Yamada magistrate's office that almost completely burned down in 1845. The 17th century jurist Oka Tadasuke was famous for his fair and humane judgments, and he worked there for four years. The main house is 268 square meters, and the nagaya-mon gate is 65 square meters. A visit will let you learn about Ise's history and the role of the magistrate's office. The inside is filled with the aroma of hinoki cypress. Highlights include a huge, impressive drum, a tatami mat room with a view of a white stretch of sand, and sliding doors with paintings of cherry blossoms that will make your time there fly by.

Mie Areas

around-area-map

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
