Owase-jinja Shrine is located five minutes by car from the Owase-Kita Interchange on the Kisei Highway. Susa-no-o-no-Mikoto is its enshrined deity, and it is the only shrine in Owase that has such a long history. According to tradition, it was founded in the Taiho period (701-703), and it is said that many warriors came to pray for victory during the Warring States period. Every year, a festival called Yaya Matsuri, a festival principally for young men, is held on Old New Year, February 1 to 5, and it is considered one of Japan's many strange festivals. Two large camphor trees that stand within the precincts are considered husband and wife trees, and are said to be more than a thousand years old. They have been designated prefectural natural monuments.

This is the childhood home of the great poet Matsuo Basho, who lived here until the age of 29. The grounds contain a stone slab inscribed with the haiku Basho composed when he found the umbilical cord his family had kept in this house – “Old village! / Umbilical’s tail at cry / Year’s end.” A building called the Chogetsuken in the garden behind the house is where The Seashell Game poetry anthology was compiled by Basho. The home provides visitors with a glimpse of the life Basho lived in the place here returned to on many occasions after his travels.

One of the four associated shrines of Outer Ise Shrine, the god Toyouke no Omikami no Aramitama is enshrined here. After passing the giant boulder called Kameishi you’ll have to climb 98 stone stairs to reach this shrine. It is said that the Kameishi boulder came all the way from the cave of the sun god on Mt. Takakura. Because of the shrine’s elevated position on the hill it was once called “Tall” no Miya. For visitors with bad backs and legs who cannot climb the stairs a Taka-no-miya remote worshiping station was constructed.
