This longstanding cutlery shop opened in 1907 and is about a three-minute walk up the approach to Geku, Ise-jingu Shrine from Iseshi Station. It was renovated in 2011 to make it a tourist-friendly gathering spot. There’re general-purpose kitchen knives, small knives, eel-cutting knives, and more, as well as scissors, nail clippers, and other household goods. They also sell original magatama (curved beads) accessories, folklore calendars, and other Ise souvenirs.

This obijime (sash cord) store, established in the beginning of the Showa period (1926-1989), sells traditional Iga Kumihimo made one by one with the hands of skilled craftspeople. Work tables called takadai are used to make the cords are most elaborate and can braid elegant cords. For that reason, they can be tightened comfortably and are durable, and are characterized by their displays of complex patterns such as spiders and faces. The store is located right outside the exit of the Iga Line's Hirokoji Station. It is characterized for being in a charming bungalow that is a renovated mid-Edo period (1603-1868) house. There is also a gallery for Japanese kimono accessories inside the shop, and they hold demonstrations of obijime being made on the takadai.

Mie Areas

around-area-map

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
