A long-standing tonkatsu breaded pork cutlet chain located in the Esca underground mall. Renowned for its miso katsu cutlets, a local Nagoya favorite made with select ingredients and covered with a secret recipe miso sauce, this popular establishment often sees lines of waiting customers, particularly during lunchtime. The restaurant boasts a deep-seated popularity with tourists as well as locals on their way home from work.

Torikai focuses on local products for local consumption, and so uses Nagoya’s famous Cochin chicken, one of Japan’s most famous breeds, as well as others like Mikawa Akadori. They offer carefully cooked dishes, including of course the standard yakitori grilled skewers, as well as their award winning Kodawari no Tebasaki wings, and Nagoya Kochin Oyakodon chicken and egg rice bowls. It’s located five minutes’ walk from JR Nagoya Station.

A restaurant which orders select eel from various areas depending on the season. Shirakawa’s hitsumabushi eel over rice is prepared with particular care and is extraordinary. Rich and flavorful, the hitsumabushi is made with a secret sauce which has been fermented, used, and topped off for decades; domestic brand-name rice; and a thin dashi stock. Pour hot tea over your rice leftovers to enjoy them chazuke style. The chef’s eye for quality ingredients, knife mastery, and intuition for when the eel is perfectly grilled all contribute to an overwhelming sense of craftsmanship (and flavor) that delights even the most discerning eel-lover. Located a two minute walk from Joshin Station on the Tsurumai Line.

The restaurant is located on the 9th floor of Meitetsu Building along side with 8-10 other restaurants. Waiting time as displayed outside is about 20-30 mins. At about 4+, there is no queue but you...

This eel specialty restaurant, famous for their version of the Nagoya specialty hitsumabushi (eel rice bowl), is located in the Esca Underground Shopping Center beneath Nagoya Station. Their hitsumabushi uses carefully selected eels which are covered with their secret sauce that uses a rich tamari-soy sauce base and cooked over ubame oak charcoal to create a luxuriant sweet-smelling dish. The taste of the crisp grilled skin is unbelievable. Their kimoyaki (grilled eel liver) and shirayaki (unseasoned grilled eel) are also popular menu items. Being located right next to the bullet train ticket gates this is the perfect place to round off a business trip or vacation.

I was looking for take out and decided to go for hitsumabushi once again. So I went to ESCA and stumbled upon this restaurant. First impression was that this must be good since there is a long queue...

A Japanese dining restaurant housed in a renovated public bathhouse built in the early Showa period. Soramame has been frequently featured on television. The interior has a modern feel and will put you at ease. At Soramame, you can enjoy creative cuisine made with an abundance of local vegetables. In addition to vegetables dishes, Soramae’s full menu includes charcoal roasted Hida beef and lobster. The kombu stock oden is particularly popular; seasonal vegetables and other ingredients are steeped in a delicious kombu stock to create a superb dish.

About two minutes walk from Nakamura Koen Station is this eel and formal dining restaurant. The restaurant is proud to use fresh eels purchased alive from eel farms across the country. Its specialty is the Kyosui eel, a premium brand of eel raised carefully over time. The deliciously cooked eel is meaty with a crispy skin in the Kansai style. Guests can try the eel in their preferred dish such as Nagoya specialty, eel hitsumabushi, eel kamameshi (served in a small pot), or eel served on a bowl of rice. As well as seating at tables, private rooms with sunken kotatsu seating and tatami mats are also available. The restaurant will also happily accommodate larger groups for parties.

Miyakagi, located near the Naya Bridge, opened in 1899 and serves “kashiwa” (chicken) and eel. Being able to enjoy delicious Nagoya chicken and eel at once is this restaurant’s specialty. Its famous “hitsumabushi” (eel cooked over charcoal with soy-flavored sauce and served over rice) uses a sauce recipe that’s been passed down since the restaurant opened. The chicken hot pot dish “miso suki,” which uses Mikawa red chicken and a soup with a base made using haccho miso from Okazaki, is popular as well. Those with small appetites can enjoy sides like “umaki” rolls and “momoyaki.”

Another great dining experience in Nagoya. Two levels of dining options. Feels like you are family when dining here. They are know for their fresh water eel. Their signature dish even comes with...

Ekikama Kishimen in the center of Chuo Concourse located one minute’s walk from the Central Exit of JR Nagoya Station is a specialty Kishimen (flat Japanese noodles) restaurant. It is in the perfect location at the train station, and is always crowded with passengers who are waiting for their trains and repeat customers. It has a Japanese style atmosphere and is very spacious. It opens from seven o’clock in the morning so you can enjoy a breakfast set meal with kishimen. The taste of kishimen with its springy texture is made from soy sauce, salt and miso (soybean paste). Torimiso kishimen with Nagoya cochin based on sweet and spicy chicken miso with Nagoya cochin is highly recommended. The set meal with tenmusu (a rice ball with tempura) is also recommended.

Aichi Areas

around-area-map

Aichi is a prefecture of great natural beauty with Nagoya city at its heart, a busy hub home to a labyrinth of underground shops and the 17th-century Nagoya Castle. Castles are easy to find in this history-rich prefecture, but the highlight for history buffs has to be the Museum Meiji-mura, where preserved buildings from the turn of the 20th century are displayed in all their grandeur in an outdoor museum.
