It is the second largest artificial lake in the prefecture after Lake Sakuma, and the Yahagi Dam is at the northwest part of the lake. The lake is V-shaped, stretching from east to west. The left bank is in the city of Toyota in Aichi Prefecture, and the east bank is in the city of Ena in Gifu Prefecture. Its capacity is equivalent to 52 Nagoya Domes. In 1969, more than 1,000 cherry trees were planted around the lake, and they bloom every spring. In the fall, visitors are treated to a mystical scene enveloped in fog. Lake Midori, where one can get their fill of amazing nature throughout each of the four seasons, has some history behind it in that with the construction of the Shintoyone Dam in 1970 the two communities of Sogawa and Taka in the Komadate district became submerged at the bottom of the lake, and 75 households had no choice but to leave their villages and relocate elsewhere. There is the Sogawa Oike Daimyojin Shrine that is dedicated to a dragon god, and there are several legends that are passed down about it.

Aichi Areas

around-area-map

Aichi is a prefecture of great natural beauty with Nagoya city at its heart, a busy hub home to a labyrinth of underground shops and the 17th-century Nagoya Castle. Castles are easy to find in this history-rich prefecture, but the highlight for history buffs has to be the Museum Meiji-mura, where preserved buildings from the turn of the 20th century are displayed in all their grandeur in an outdoor museum.
