A venerable traditional ryotei restaurant which was founded in 1873. The restaurant serves eel cuisine, including hitsumabushi eel on rice, a Nagoya specialty. The restaurant’s a la carte menu includes many dishes made with Aichi seafood. The unagi kaiseki eel course meal requires a reservation. The restaurant also offers a menu of takeout items which can be brought home to enjoy.

I had a try at 3 out of the top 5 eel restaurants. This restaurant beats them all. Firstly order their classic Eel Bowl then Try the white unsauced eel and the liver if you have a bigger crowd. I am...

Aichi Pref. Nagoyashi Naka-ku Sakae 3-30-8 Matsuzakaya Nagoya store South Front 10F
This eel restaurant is located on the 10th floor of the South Building of Matsuzakaya department store in Naka Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. The main location which registered the trademark for the “hitsumabushi” eel dish, has been around since 1873. They use specially selected high-quality eel and grill each one carefully over Kishu Bincho charcoal with their secret sauce that has been passed down over the years. The first bowl is usually eaten as-is; the second with spices; the third with tea poured over it; and the fourth however one pleases. The “unagi kaiseki” (eel banquet) is great for special gatherings.

It was my first experience in Japan but no with the “Japanese food”. I wanted to try the real and best food and I can ensure it was the best donburi eel i hace never eaten before.

A restaurant which orders select eel from various areas depending on the season. Shirakawa’s hitsumabushi eel over rice is prepared with particular care and is extraordinary. Rich and flavorful, the hitsumabushi is made with a secret sauce which has been fermented, used, and topped off for decades; domestic brand-name rice; and a thin dashi stock. Pour hot tea over your rice leftovers to enjoy them chazuke style. The chef’s eye for quality ingredients, knife mastery, and intuition for when the eel is perfectly grilled all contribute to an overwhelming sense of craftsmanship (and flavor) that delights even the most discerning eel-lover. Located a two minute walk from Joshin Station on the Tsurumai Line.

The restaurant is located on the 9th floor of Meitetsu Building along side with 8-10 other restaurants. Waiting time as displayed outside is about 20-30 mins. At about 4+, there is no queue but you...

Aichi Pref. Nagoyashi Nakamura-ku Tsubakichou 6-9 Esca underground shopping area
This eel specialty restaurant, famous for their version of the Nagoya specialty hitsumabushi (eel rice bowl), is located in the Esca Underground Shopping Center beneath Nagoya Station. Their hitsumabushi uses carefully selected eels which are covered with their secret sauce that uses a rich tamari-soy sauce base and cooked over ubame oak charcoal to create a luxuriant sweet-smelling dish. The taste of the crisp grilled skin is unbelievable. Their kimoyaki (grilled eel liver) and shirayaki (unseasoned grilled eel) are also popular menu items. Being located right next to the bullet train ticket gates this is the perfect place to round off a business trip or vacation.

Aichi Pref. Nagoyashi Naka-ku Sakae 3-16-1 Matsuzakaya Nagoya store main building B1F
Founded in 1873, this longstanding restaurant lets visitors enjoy eel dishes in a casual atmosphere and offers takeout as well. It’s on the first basement floor of the main Matsuzakaya building in Naka Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, inside the “Gochiso Paradise” area. Its flagship item is the excellent “hitsumabushi,” which uses a secret sauce passed down through the generations and healthy, Kishu Bincho charcoal-grilled eel prepared by expert chefs. There’re also eel rice bowls, “umaki” (omelet-wrapped eel), “mabushi nori maki unagi” (flavored eel rice rolled with seasoned laver), “sansho-ni” (boiled eel with Japanese pepper) set that makes a great gift, and more.

An eel cuisine restaurant located in Nishihonmachi, Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture. The cafe is also conveniently located close to Toyokawa Inari as well as a two minute walk from Toyokawa Station. Here you can enjoy thick, fluffy broiled eel covered in crisp skin smothered with a thick, sweet sauce.

Kyorakuken is located at nearby Toyokawa station, so you can easily find it in your way to (from) Toyokawa Inari. My recommended menu is Hitsumabushi, because you can try several ways to eat of eel...

Aichi Main Areas

around-area-map

Aichi is a prefecture of great natural beauty with Nagoya city at its heart, a busy hub home to a labyrinth of underground shops and the 17th-century Nagoya Castle. Castles are easy to find in this history-rich prefecture, but the highlight for history buffs has to be the Museum Meiji-mura, where preserved buildings from the turn of the 20th century are displayed in all their grandeur in an outdoor museum.
