    A tourism facility located in Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture comprised of two areas at the foot and top of the 452 meter tall Mt. Katsuragi connected via a ropeway. The ropeway is 1,791 meters long and goes up 411 meters, and during a trip riders can get a sweeping view of the nearby city, Mt. Fuji, Suruga Bay, and the mountains of Hakone. At the top of the mountain, visitors can enjoy the seasonal beauty of the Sky Garden or check out the popular café and sofas overlooking the surrounding area in the Fujimi Terrace area. At the foot of the mountain, there’s an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant and shops selling a wide variety of souvenirs.

    A theme park located in Higashiizu Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture with a zoo, amusement park, sports zone, and more. In addition to white tiger, lion, and cheetah exhibits, there’s also a Walking Safari area where visitors can view animals like giraffes and zebras living in environments close to their natural habitat. There’s also a Ferris wheel, go-carts, a Dinosaur Forest dotted with lifelike dinosaur models, and a miniature golf course, making the park the perfect place to enjoy an entire day as a family or group.

    Beautiful place and beautiful animals. It was not busy so our child could interact with the animals; feed giraffe, touch a Rhino, etc... lots of fun.

  • Shuzenji Niji no Sato

    A theme park which makes the most of the beautiful scenery in the Shuzenji area of Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The park’s spacious grounds are a whopping 500 thousand square meters. The park is divided into numerous distinct areas, such as the British Village, modeled after a medieval English townscape; the Canadian Village, modeled after the city of Nelson, Canada; the Western-style Fairy Garden; Japanese Garden; and the Takumi Village, where visitors can try Japanese traditional crafts. Visitors can travel between the areas using a bus or the British-made Romney Railway train. The park is also famous for its autumn foliage, and in fall, the leaves on the park’s approximately 2,000 trees, including 1,000 maples, change into beautiful reds and golds.

    This is a zoo and botanical garden in Higashi Izu-cho, Kamo County in Shizuoka Prefecture and is composed of three facilities: an alligator park, a plant park and a separate park. The alligator park allows you to observe 17 different kinds of alligators including cross-breeds from various angles and holds events to get to know alligators throughout the year except in the winter. The plant and separate parks have 15 greenhouses that exhibit approximately 5,000 types of tropical plants including bananas and original orchid species. The separate park is popular for its red pandas. It is also known for having the only Amazonian Manatee in Japan.

    An aquarium located in Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture built on the water using a natural bay. In the Perry aqua dome situated in the middle of the bay, visitors can view large aquarium tanks recreating the ocean off Izu. There are also bottlenose dolphin shows held on the aquarium’s “marine stage.” Meanwhile, Pacific white-sided dolphin and sea lion shows are held in the aquarium’s marine stadium. Exhibiting some 250 species and 1,500 individual marine creatures, facilities such as a penguin pool, earless seal hall, and sea turtle pond have made the aquarium a top destination for visitors to Shimoda.

    Located in Kawazu Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture, iZoo is one of the largest zoos in Japan dedicated to reptiles and amphibians. iZoo cares for a diverse variety of reptiles and amphibians, including an endangered Galapogos giant tortoise, iguanas, lizards, snakes, and frogs. In addition to indoor and outdoor animal exhibits, visitors can also enjoy taking commemorative photos, petting, and feeding some of the zoo’s creatures. Children 30 kilograms and under can take a photo riding the giant tortoise (extra fee required). Closest station: Kawazu Station on the Izu Kyuko Line. Closest bus stop: The “Shobusawa” stop on the Tokai Bus.

    Watch out when you walk around the iZoo. There are reptiles crawling on the ground. The most exciting part is touching the snake and lizard. You can also feed the tortoises.

    This is a treasure museum located adjacent to Ryosen-ji Temple grounds and is designated as a National Historic Site as the place where the Japan-US Treaty of Peace and Amity was concluded. The museum differs from general historical archives as it doesn’t just have materials related to the opening of Japan to the world and original documents, it also has video displays. There are collections on display with the theme of Perry, Blackships, the Nanban period and Intercultural exchange, and also a collection on display with the theme of “gender and religion”. The museum is located 10 minutes by foot from Izukyu-line Shimoda Station.

    A small museum about the Black Ships of Japan. The museum hosts a small store and pictures. One must pay about $5.00 to enter the entire museum. It's an ok place to see.

    This is a nature park located on a slightly elevated hill, and you can see the Pacific with one sweep of the eye from its three observation platforms. It is the site of the ruins of the mountain castle, Shimoda Castle which the Hojo clan built in preparation of their confrontation with Hideyoshi. The best time to see Azaleas is in spring, hydrangeas in early summer, and then the common camellia is during winter. The “Hydrangea Festival” is also held every June. Since there is a monument to the opening of Japan to the world and a stone monument of Shimooka Renjo, let’s enjoy a walk while thinking about the history of Shimoda.

    This is a beach in Shizuoka Prefecture which boasts of the beauty of its white sand and crystal clear waters. A feature of this beach is that it has three beaches which are each distinct. “Shirahama Ohama Beach” is an 800-meter-long beach which brims with a feeling of openness. The beach is a Mecca for surfers and wind surfers and gets crowded with young people. “Shirahama Central Beach” is on the northern side of the Shirahama Ohama Beach and besides its sandy beach, it has a rocky area where you can gather shellfish on the seashore. The waves are calm in the cove section and there are also many people bathing with their families. “Itado Coast” is a district which imparts a sense of a quiet and relaxing fishing village which has remained unchanged. There are numerous ways you can enjoy this place such as snorkeling and fishing.

    This beach is located 10 minutes south by car from Shimoda Station, Shizuoka Prefecture—it has a neat environment and is a popular beach for surfers and groups. Together with the adjacent mineral beach, the pure white sandy beach continues on for 770 meters. There are many holiday homes in the vicinity and there are also many foreign visitors. As of course there are beach huts, and the area is also dotted with stylish cafes and restaurants, it has an atmosphere similar to a beach abroad. Every September, the “Big Shower” festival is held which is the prefecture’s largest marine bath festival.

    This is a residence which was built in 1887 as a draper’s house in Matsuzaki Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. You can get to see inside this large land owner’s building whose family built their fortune in just a few generations—the luxurious wooden construction gives the building a characteristic ambience. The Matsuzaki Visitor’s Center, which is immediately right of the entrance of Nakase House, exhibits geosites of the Izu Peninsula. There is also a coffee shop where you can enjoy sweet treats in the tatami room.

    なまこ壁通りを楽しんだ後にこの場所に立ち寄りました。 観光案内や地場産品の販売なども行っていました。 大きな大正時代の時計塔があって目印になります。 なまこ壁通りからときわ大橋を渡ると右側にあります。 近くに駐車場もありました。 商家はとても贅沢な造りで中は当時の調度品などが展示されています(入場:¥100)。 是非なまこ壁通りと一緒に観光すると良いと思います。

    This is a museum which aims to communicate to the succeeding generations the contributions made by the craftsman, Chohachi Irie to plaster art “kote-e” and the techniques of traditional plasterers. Approximately 50 unique artworks created by Chohachi Irie—which are different from normal plaster art—are on display and are introduced in the museum. It takes 50 minutes by bus to get to the museum from Izukyu-line Shimoda Station.

    This beach is only accessible by boat from the Nakagi area in Minamiizu Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture. Protected by a unique geographical environment, here visitors can enjoy untouched natural beauty. The beach’s waters are the clearest in Izu, and the pebbles at the sea bottom five meters down can be seen clearly from the surface. The beach has become famous in recent years as an excellent spot for snorkeling, and many come here to view a beautiful ocean world of colorful fish and coral. Be aware that there are no shower facilities or toilets at the beach.

Visitors can also enjoy shellfish gathering in the rocky areas to either side of the beach. Parking, showers, and toilets available. Equipment such as parasols and beach beds are available for rental with a small fee from the beachside clubhouse.

    Nicknamed the “Côte d'Azur of the East” thanks to the local orange-yellow roofs and the beach’s white sands, this swimming beach is located in the Iwachi Hot Spring area of Matsuzaki Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture. Boasting the clearest waters in West Izu, the ocean off the beach is shallow and the waves are gentle. Families with children are sure to find it a safe and comfortable swimming spot. The boat-shaped D'Azur Iwachi hot spring bath in the middle of the beach is free to use, and you can get right in while still wearing your bathing suit. Public toilets and pay showers available.

    Located in Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Ema is perhaps the largest strawberry picking facility in the prefecture. The center is only open during strawberry season, from December to around the Golden Week holidays (early May). Visitors can enjoy eating two strawberry varieties here: Akihime, a large sized strawberry cultivar originally developed in Shizuoka; and Benihoppe, a variety based on Akihime. During a picking session, visitors can eat as many ripe, sweet, and juicy strawberries as they like for 30 minutes, and condensed milk to top them with is provided for free.     A swimming beach located in Toji, Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture where visitors can enjoy a shallow, clear sea and geographically diverse, scenic coastline. A beach frequented by local families, it remains less crowded even during beach season. There is also a rocky area where shellfish can be gathered and even families with small children can come here to enjoy all the delights of a summer beach. A sand skiing hill and Ryugu Cave, famous for its natural skylight, are also located nearby. There are bed and breakfasts not far away, but the beach itself has no clubhouses or showers.

    A French garden located in Kawazu Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture which was created as a sister garden to the Bagatelle Park in Paris, France. Past the avenue of trees at the entrance to the park, visitors will find the park’s French Plaza, an area filled with a fountain and small villas modeled after the Palace of Versailles. The park is planted with 1,100 varieties and 6,000 individual rose plants and the bilaterally symmetrical park stretching into the distance looks like something out of an oil painting. There is also a café in the shop which serves popular rose soft serve ice cream and a shop selling rose-themed goods.
