Records state this ancient Shinto shrine was founded in 709. Standing on 1,007-meter-high Yamazumi Pass, the shrine grounds are thickly covered by huge Japanese cedar trees over 1,300 years old. Records state the shrine was established to house the ritually divided and transferred spirit of a god enshrined in Oyamazumi Shrine in Iyo Province (now Ehime Prefecture); the grounds are a natural paradise and in summer visitors can hear the song of Oriental dollarbirds. Records also state that the mighty Tokugawa Ieyasu stopped here to pray for continued luck in war prior to the Battle of Mikatagahara in 1572. Later, Ieyasu was highly reverent of the shrine and viewed it as the shrine protecting Hamamatsu Castle from the unlucky direction of the northeast, and today many visitors still come here to pray for the dispelling of bad luck, household peace and prosperity, and thriving business.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
