    Shizuoka Hamamatsu-shi Tenryu-ku Harunocho Ryoke 841
"This ancient Shinto shrine is dedicated to Mt. Akiha, the most sacred mountain in the Tokai region. Since it was founded in 709, the shrine has been visited by worshippers seeking the protection from fire it is purported to provide. In medieval times, the shrine was known as the ""Akiha Daigongen;"" designated a top-ranking shrine by the Imperial Court, it received donations of numerous swords of excellent manufacture from noted samurai. During the shrine's Fire Festival, held from December 15 to 16 each year, three dances - a bow dance, a sword dance, and a fire dance - are offered to the gods to pray for protection from fires, floods, and illness."

Shizuoka Pref. Hamamatsushi Chuo-ku Togimachi 302-5
A shrine in Togimachi, Chuo-ku, Hamamatsu City. Gosha Shrine and Suwa Shrine merged in 1962 and both had deep ties to the Tokugawa family. There is a deeply held belief in the deities of the shrine to provide good childbirth, protection for children, and child rearing so during October and November many people visit the shrine for the 7-5-3 festival.

Shizuoka Pref. Hamamatsushi Tenryu-ku Harunochouryouke 328-1
This shrine is located at the foot of Mt. Akiha, in Harunocho Ryoke, Tenryu Ward, Hamamatsu City. This shimo-sha shrine is officially called Yosaiden and the current building was erected in 1943. Akiha Shrine is said to have been constructed in 709; it venerates Hinokagutsuchino-omikami as shrine deity and treats Mt. Akiha as a mountain of worship. It is the head shrine for the nearly 400 Akiha Shrines in the country, and worshippers have come since ancient times to venerate the god of protection from fires.

    Shizuoka Hamamatsu-shi Tenryu-ku Misakubocho Yamazumi 230
Records state this ancient Shinto shrine was founded in 709. Standing on 1,007-meter-high Yamazumi Pass, the shrine grounds are thickly covered by huge Japanese cedar trees over 1,300 years old. Records state the shrine was established to house the ritually divided and transferred spirit of a god enshrined in Oyamazumi Shrine in Iyo Province (now Ehime Prefecture); the grounds are a natural paradise and in summer visitors can hear the song of Oriental dollarbirds. Records also state that the mighty Tokugawa Ieyasu stopped here to pray for continued luck in war prior to the Battle of Mikatagahara in 1572. Later, Ieyasu was highly reverent of the shrine and viewed it as the shrine protecting Hamamatsu Castle from the unlucky direction of the northeast, and today many visitors still come here to pray for the dispelling of bad luck, household peace and prosperity, and thriving business.

    Shizuoka Hamamatsu-shi Tenryu-ku Misakubocho Okuryoke 5107-2
This Shinto shrine stands before Aokuzure Pass on the border between Shizuoka Prefecture and Nagano Prefecture. The shrine is famously one of only a few dedicated to the feet and legs; its origins date back to when Moriya Shinjiro, the fifth-generation lord of the area in the Kamakura period, took great care in nursing Kamakura shogunate regent Hojo Tokiyori, curing his foot pain. Even today, the shrine is said to heal diseases of the feet, and great numbers of parishioners come here seeking to be blessed with good health and sound legs. The Akiha Kaido road, which passes in front of the shrine, has connected the Enshu (western Shizuoka Prefecture) and Shinshu (Nagano Prefecture) regions since ancient times, and countless travelers have come and gone along its length. The road is also said to have been used by the samurai lord Takeda Shingen when he engaged the forces of the mighty Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
