  • Tanuma Kaido
    Travel / Tourism
    Shizuoka Fujieda-shi Makinohara-shi
"This is the common name for the 28-kilometer road connecting ""Fujieda-shuku"", the 22nd post town of 53 Stations of the Tokaido, and Sagara in Makinohara City. The name was given because Tanuma Okitsugu, who advanced in life from being a kosho to an Elder for the 9th generation Tokugawa Ieshige, prepared the road. Known for the ""Kansei Reforms"", one of the three major reforms of the Edo period, Okitsugi improved public finance by organizing social capital, such as by developing mines and rice paddies and commerce. The present road is paved, so you cannot see what it looked like in the past, but there is a stone monument which represents the origin and is close to ""Oganeke"", a building from roughly 300 years ago which has been designated a National Important Cultural Property."

  • Shida Gunga Ruins
    Travel / Tourism
    Shizuoka Fujieda-shi Minami Surugadai 1-12
"These are nationally-designated ruins in an area of the mountainous area forming the Oi River. They are the ruins of a government office of ""Shida County of Suruga"", which during the Nara and Heian periods ruled over the area from the western side of present-day Fujieda City to present-day Shimada City. The hottate-bashira buildings, gates, and roads of the remaining structures were discovered in an excavation survey in 1977. The fact that a large number of documents and earthenware which bore inscriptions of ""Shida"" county names and official titles is supporting evidence that it was a county office during the Nara and Heian periods. In the historical resource museum, there is display showing the process from the discovery of the ruins to their recreation, and you can learn about daily life in the old county office."

The cathedral stretched 180 meters east-to-west and 250 meters north-to-south. With the main hall in the center, it is thought that the north side had an auditorium, and the south side had a middle gate. Since the characteristics of these Kokubunji Temple ruins remain distinctive, and the scholarly value is high, they were designated as a National Special Historic Site in 1952."

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
