Shizuoka Gotenba-shi Koyama 719 Toki No Sumika
An art museum located in the multipurpose resort Toki-no-Sumika, which is either a five-minute walk from Iwanami Station, a ten-minute drive from the Gotemba or Susono Intercahnge, or reachable via a free shuttlebus from three different train stations. It exhibits about 200 works of the Shizuoka-born artist Maejima Hideaki. One of the attractions of this museum is being able to enjoy a close-up view of his wood carvings of children and animals and other motifs. A further attraction is the adjacent aquarium where you can see 4,500 goldfish of about 200 species, including some expensive varieties coveted by collectors and others so novel that they don't even have names.

The museum is a 2-minute walk from Wasabi-daira bus stop and consists of the Kyuto Yamamoto Memorial Museum, which commemorates the achievements of the late Kyuto Yamamoto, a modern Japanese-style painter who was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit in 1988, and the Museum Muroto, which holds various special exhibitions. Visitors can compare the finished work with a sketch of the original.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
