    Also known as the Kinomiya Myojin and the Kinomiya Dai-Myojin, this ancient Shinto shrine has long served the faithful in Izu and Atami. Legend has it that the shrine was built to house an idol which a fisherman caught in his net in 710. The massive sacred tree on the shrine’s grounds, named Okusu, is a nationally designated Natural Monument; over 2,000 years old, it is the second largest tree in Japan. It is said that circling the trunk once extends one’s life by one year. The shrine’s rest area, where visitors can buy tea, Raifuku sweets, and light meals, is also popular. Closest station: Kinomiya Station.

  • Atami Baien

    This plum garden located in the city of Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture was first opened in 1886 and is famous for its “ume” (or Japanese plum/apricot) trees considered to be the earliest blooming in Japan, and other fall foliage, considered to occur the latest in Japan. In addition to 59 varieties and 472 individual plum trees, the garden is also dotted with some 380 deciduous trees of other species, allowing visitors to enjoy beautiful seasonal scenery while strolling about the grounds. The garden’s “Daiichi-go” (“Number One”) plum tree generally blossoms around late November to early December, while the garden’s various other varieties gradually come into bloom one after the other from January through March. The Atami Baien Festival is held from mid-January to mid-March, and during this time a footbath facility and souvenir shop are opened on the garden grounds. Geisha, rakugo comedic storytelling, and other performances are also held during the festival period.

    A Shinto shrine located in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture with a rich history. The location where famous shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo and Hojo Masako met and wed, the shrine is revered for providing aid in love and marriage. Visitors can enjoy a sweeping view of Atami and the blue ocean beyond from the shrine’s grounds. The main shrine is located up the mountain beyond the back of the inner sanctuary and can be reached by walking for approximately one hour along a mountain trail which passes by a worship space, Hakusan jinja Shrine, and Musubumyojin-honsha Shrine. Soto-jinja Shrine, dedicated to a hot spring god, is located at the bottom of an 800 step set of stairs leading away from the inner sanctuary. During the shrine’s festival held from April 14 to 15, many visitors come to watch a portable mikoshi shrine parade around the local area.

    A castle built in the Momoyama period style located at the Nishikigaura mountaintop in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The castle was in fact built in 1959; no castle was ever historically located here. The castle tower viewing platform offers a stunning view 160 meters above sea level, and on clear days visitors can see all the way to the Izu Peninsula and Oshima. The castle’s grounds are filled with things to see and do, including a jacuzzi foot bath to soothe aching feet while gazing at beautiful scenery, a free game center, an area where visitors can try various Edo period activities, a museum dedicated to castles and samurai culture, and a tea house offering sweets and spectacular views. The adjoining Atami Trick Art Museum is also popular. Fee required to enter castle grounds.

    A 660 thousand square meter flower garden which makes use of the geography of Nishikigaura, a designated Place of Scenic Beauty in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The facility consists of 12 themed gardens, including an English rose garden, a herb garden, rose valley, and Japanese garden. One of the unique characteristics of the garden is its use of pale roses and other flower varieties in order to better match the scenery of the nearby ocean. The best time to visit is from May to June when some 600 varieties and 4,000 individual rose plants come into bloom. There is also an herb shop modeled after an image of English country life, a workshop, and ocean view restaurant.

    This is a beach lined with palm trees, and has a resort-like atmosphere with gentle wave breaking ashore. The sandy beach is illuminated at night and gets transformed into a fantastic moonlight beach. This is Japan’s first sandy beach illumination, which is produced by the world’s famous lighting designer, Motoko Ishii. The beach is authorized in “sacred place for lovers” and at the fountain at the tip of the terrace, there is a monument where lovers can pledge their love to each other.
  • Statue of Kanichi and Omiya

    A bronze statue located close to Atami Sun Beach in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture depicting the characters of Kanichi and Omiya from literary master Ozaki Koyo’s novel Konjiki yasha. Just before Omiya is to be wed to Kanichi, she falls in love with and marries a wealthy man. The statue recreates a famous scene set right here in Atami in which Kanichi presses Omiya for answers and kicks her in anger. The statue is illuminated from sunset until 10:00 p.m. Right next to the statue stands the second Omiya Pine, and the area has become a top sightseeing spot in Atami.

    This is an all-weather water theme park in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is a facility with an ocean view reminiscent of a tropical resort where visitors can enjoy pools and a spa that use the plentiful water from the hot spring source. In addition to a 73 meter-long water slide, a running water pool, a 25 meter pool and a children’s pool, an open rooftop pool is also available during the summer. Keep your swimsuit on to enjoy the 12 different types of baths in the spa; it is always busy with groups and families. The park also has a restaurant, a shop and a BBQ terrace with everything you need.

    Great spot for year-round swimming with kids. They have a tall water slide but you have to be over 120cm to ride. There is a pretty unique swimming "river" which has a current and is not very deep...

    Located in the sightseeing spot of Shizuoka Prefecture’s Atami City, this was constructed as a villa in 1919 and is a famous residence that was declared one of Atami’s Top Three Villas. It was used as a ryokan (Japanese inn) during the Showa period (mid-1920s to late 1980s), and as a famous lodge in Atami it was loved by various literary masters and celebrities including Naoya Shiga, Junichiro Tanizaki, and Osamu Dazai. It is a refined residence with a Japanese-style main building, a western-style structure that combines the beauty of the East and the West, and a chisenkaiyu-shiki garden (a style of garden that features a path around a pond), and it was opened to the public as an Atami City Designated Tangible Cultural Property.

    I enjoyed the house and garden. Interesting history. No English information though. About 30 minute walk from Atami sta.

The shop interior has a striking retro style as if one had gone back in time to the Showa period (from the mid-1920s to late 1980s), with various detailed and elaborate decorations that catch the eye. Inside the center of the shop is a pond in which carp are swimming around. Enjoy coffee and tea along with a menu of food from the good old days that includes warm egg sandwiches, Napolitan spaghetti, and home-made pudding.

    This Japanese-style sweets store located at the corner just before the entrance of the Atami Ginza Shopping Street in Shizuoka Prefecture’s Atami City is a long-established store that was founded in 1918. The Kyuzo-style building catches the eye thanks to the plentiful use of its Showa-period carpenter techniques such as the coffered, finely latticed ceiling, sparrow and butterfly nailhead covers, and decorative ridge-end tiles. Their mainstay product is Yokan (sweet bean jelly), in which one can taste the original flavor of the azuki bean. They maintain the traditional production method and taste, and it has continued to be loved by customers of a wide range of ages since they were founded. At the storefront, they also have various Japanese-sweets on display such as kibi-mochi (millet mochi) and uguisu-mochi (mochi filled with red bean paste and topped with green soy flour).

    This Japanese sweets shop within the Atami Ekimae Heiwa Dori Shopping Street in Shizuoka Prefecture’s Atami City is easily distinguished by the large red noren curtains bearing the shop name. They are very particular about their ingredients used, such as homemade miso, Bicchu dainagon (a large-grained variety of azuki bean), Tokachi azuki bean, and Tanba black soybean, and ever since it was founded it has been selling a variety of sweets crafted with meticulous techniques. The Miso Tsubo Manju made with miso that takes one year to mature is often purchased as an Atami souvenir. Also popular are their Dainagon Zenzai (red bean soup), Coffee Jelly, and Horoniga Caramel Ichiraku Pudding which contain tsubuan (coarse sweet red bean paste) and can be purchased at the front of the shop.

    This Japanese-style café on Nakamise-dori Street in front of Atami Station also serves as a workshop and gallery that displays Izu’s folk art and works by artisans. The shop has a relaxed atmosphere thanks to the warmth of its wood interior and high ceiling. Guests can enjoy specialty coffee which is hand-dripped after receiving the order in handmade cups made by artists. Their sweets made with carefully selected ingredients such as the Shira-tama Cream Anmitsu and the Mitsu-mame are also popular.

    This French confectionery specialist in Ginza Town, Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture is an old shop established in 1947. The first-generation chef opened the shop after long research and self study and it has since become a much loved landmark in the area. In the storefront showcase are pillow sponge shortcake, mille-feuille, roll cake, and other pleasingly traditional cakes all in a row. They continue to pay close attention to the fundamental ingredients like the dough, sponginess and cream and make cakes to traditional French recipes.

    熱海の老舗ケーキ屋さんです。ここでいつも店の名のモンブランを買ってホテルに持ち帰りします。濃厚で香り深い味がします。コーヒーや濃いお茶と良くマッチします。入店が遅いと良く売り切れている時が有りました。

    Situated in front of the Shinsui (water) Park in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture is this restaurant with wonderful views overlooking the sea from the outside terrace. Customers can enjoy Italian-styled cuisine at this restaurant using locally produced ingredients such as vegetables from farmers in Atami and Yugawara, seafood from Sagami Bay, and game hunted in the winter Izu mountains. Dishes on the menu for both lunch and dinner are perfectly complimented with a nice glass of wine. When the weather is warm it’s a lovely place to sit out on the terrace and feel the cool sea breeze while enjoying your meal. It gets very busy on the day of the Atami Sea Fireworks Festival.

During the morning, the adjoining bread factory bakes fresh bread, enveloping the area in a delicious scent. The most popular item among the many products available is the croissants made with natural yeast that feature a crunchy exterior and doughy interior. They have a rich variety of goods, from standard French bread to blueberry danishes, tsubu anpan (bun with coarse sweet red bean paste), sandwiches, and more. There is a dining space where you can enjoy soup and drinks, making this a popular lunch and rest spot among tourists.
