As a famous tunnel that appeared in the Yasunari Kawabata novel Izu-no-Odoriko (The Dancing Girl of Izu) and the Seicho Matsumoto novel Amagi Goe (Amagi-Pass), it supported the lives of the locals from 1905 until 1970 when the New Amagi Tunnel was completed. Shizuoka Mishima-shi Tamazawa 1
Located twenty minutes by bus from Mishima Station or a twenty-minute drive from the Numazu Interchange, this temple is located a bit removed from the town at the foot of Mt. Hakone. It is said to have been founded in 1284 by Nissho Shonin, one of the six revered monks whom Nichiren, founder of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism, chose to carry on his mission. The temple was moved several times before being set up at its present site. There used to be about 240 temple buildings, but all except the kitchen burned down. At present, the treasure hall holds a number of precious items such as the color painting on silk of Nichiren Shonin, an Important Cultural Property,. Major festivals are held in the spring, summer, and fall. The gardens surrounding the temple are planted with cherries and other flowering plants to create a colorful sight in all four seasons.

    Shizuoka Izu-shi Yugashima Kido
This souvenir shop is located inside the Joren Falls parking lot just next to the Joren no Taki bus stop. It is about a 33-minute bus ride from Shuzenji Station on the Izuhakone Railway on a Tokai Bus. The shop carries famous local sweets, marine products, wasabi, tea-related products, and other quintessential Izu products. One of their most notable offerings is their Amagisan Zuido Rolls. These premium roll cakes, which were inspired by the Old Amagi Tunnel, are popular for their fluffy cake covering and their refreshingly light cream filling made with New Summer Orange, a local specialty. We also recommend Umeera!, a distilled spirit made with New Summer Orange.

  • Kirameki no Oka
    Travel / Tourism
    Shizuoka Pref. Numadushi Ita
Positioned on a small hill in Ida, Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Kirameki no Oka is a superb viewing spot with expansive views of Suruga Bay and Mt. Fuji. When the sun shines on Suruga Bay in just the right way the surface of the sea sparkles quite majestically. It is because of this that the view has derived its name (Kirameki no Oka literally means sparkling hill). The viewing point is known also as a place to witness glorious sunsets over the sea and the Ida district. From January to February the blossoming rape flowers can be seen in the fields below and the Chinese characters of the name ‘Ida’ can also be seen planted within the flowers. Below the staircase is the Sungo burial mound preserved in just the same way as when it was first excavated.

A ferry that runs from the Ayumibash stop, a 10-minute walk from JR Numazu Station, to Numazu Harbor. The ferry, a popular and well-loved mode of transportation for ordinary people until 1971, was revived in 1997. Now anyone can enjoy a ride on the old-style wooden ferry and perhaps, if lucky, a view of Mt. Fuji. Visitors should be aware that runs are cancelled in rough weather, and as a rule, children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Passengers who hold a Shizuoka Kosodate Yutai Card (Child Care Special Card) receive special privileges.

The park blooms with many of the exemplary flowers of Amagi including Korea rhododendron (Rhododendron mucronulatum) and ebine orchids (Calanthe discolor). The most stunning of all are the 13,000 rhododendrons representing some 500 species that come into peak bloom from mid-April to late May. A Rhododendron Festival is held in the park during Golden Week in late April and early May.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
