    Shizuoka Izunokuni-shi Kona 24-2
This soba restaurant is located about a five-minute drive from Izu-Nagaoka Station on the Izuhakone Railway. It serves authentic handmade soba noodles made with Hitachi Aki Soba from Ibaraki Prefecture. The restaurant uses local ingredients as much as possible. The soba pairs perfectly with the mildly-flavored dipping sauce, which is made with soy sauce from Gotemba City and katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) from Numazu City. Popular offerings include their oroshi soba, which is topped with a tempura of sakura shrimp, as well as their famous bukkake soba, which is topped with shredded nori seaweed. We also recommend their kamo seiro, which is served with a dipping sauce featuring roasted and boiled duck. The restaurant also offers banquet packages that centrally feature soba noodles (a reservation made at least two days in advance is required).

    Shizuoka Izunokuni-shi Nagaoka 1078-1
This venerable Japanese confectionary shop was founded in 1916. It is located about a 10-minute bus ride from Izu-Nagaoka Station on the Izuhakone Railway on Izuhakone Bus and then about a two-minute walk from the Onsen-eki bus stop. Their flagship product is their Prime Minister's Prize-winning Nagaoka manju. This long-selling confection is noted for the slight saltiness and gentle sweetness of its red bean paste filling and the soft and fluffy texture of its pastry covering. Another offering is their joyo manju (grated yam steamed buns), a substantial confection notable for its chewy texture made with top-grade rice flour. We also recommend seasonal items such as their kuri yokan (chestnut red bean paste jellies), which are made entirely by hands by the shop's craftsmen without the use of machines.

    Shizuoka Izunokuni-shi Nagaoka 150-4
This venerable soba restaurant near Yurakkusu Park in Izu Nagaoka Onsen is located just next to the Bunjochi-mae bus stop on the Izuhakone Bus Nagaoka Onsenba Loop, about a 10-minute bus ride from Izu-Nagaoka Station on the Izuhakone Railway. The restaurant primarily uses stone-ground domestic buckwheat flour, giving their noodles flavor and resilience. Their specialty is kakiage tenzaru, which features soba noodles served on a bamboo strainer together with a tempura fritter. Their large, crispy fritters are well-known for their light taste. Another offering is their anago tenzaru, which features noodles served with a tempura of a whole conger eel. The restaurant exclusively uses eel caught in Tokyo Bay and steadfastly refuses to make the dish when eel of suitable quality is not available.

    Shizuoka Izu-shi Toi 472
This Japanese restaurant near Toi Beach is located about a 50-minute bus ride from Shuzenji Station on the Izuhakone Railway on the Tokai Bus to Dogashima and Matsuzaki, and about a one-minute walk from the Toi bus stop. The restaurant offers donburi (rice bowls), set meals, a la carte items, and more carefully prepared with local ingredients by skilled chefs at affordable prices. Their most popular item is their kaisendon, which features fresh tuna, red snapper, largescale blackfish, horse mackerel, greater amberjack, sweet shrimp, spear squid, and other sashimi served on a bowl of rice. We also recommend their sashimi set meals and their Tamashige bento boxes.

    Shizuoka Izu-shi Kashiwa Kubo 1355
This Japanese confection shop is located about a three-minute walk from Shuzenji Station on the Izuhakone Railway. Its owner has been certified as a Selected Wagashi Professional, a title only bestowed to truly skilled Japanese confectioners. The shop creates Japanese confections characteristic of Shuzenji while both preserving traditions and also changing with the times. One of the shop's most popular products is its Shuzenji-yaki, which are pancake sandwiches made with brown sugar from Okinawa's Hateruma Island. Another is their Kogiku Manju buns, a confection featuring a fluffy castella covering and a custard cream filling that has been made since the time of the current proprietor's predecessor. We also recommend their Yokubari Dango, which feature rice flour dumplings with strained bean paste filling and then covered with a sweet soy glaze.

    Shizuoka Mishima-shi Izumicho 1-31
A soba restaurant located to the left of the south entrance to Rakujuen Park, a seven-minute walk from Mishima Hirokoji Station or a ten-minute walk from Mishima Station. It serves soba noodles made by hand from local water and the carefully selected buckwheat flour. The recommended menu option is Tensanshoku, in which the customer chooses three of the five varieties of soba available and enjoy a small amount of each. As the name of the restaurant suggests, Kawari Soba, that is, soba with seasonal ingredients incorporated into the noodles, comes in 18 varieties, of which two are available at any one time. The restaurant is open every day of the year for lunch, but for dinner, it is open only on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Groups of four or more can make reservations to enjoy a soba-based Kaiseki gourmet dinner or a banquet-style meal.

"A venerable shop dating from the early Meiji Period (1868-1912), that sells dried fish. It is located about a 30-minute drive from the Tomei-Numazu Interchange. Based on the slogan, ""Traditional flavor and a generous heart,"" this shop not only sells dried fish but has a gallery on its second floor. The dried fish are made from carefully selected fish caught in Japanese waters and processed with great attention to the smallest additives. A daily lunch special is served in the shop's restaurant so that visitors can enjoy the fish that are most delicious at that time."

    Shizuoka Numazu-shi Senbonminatocho 109
Located a 25-minute drive from the Numazu Interchange on the Tomei Expressway, this is the finest Donburi (rice bowl) specialty restaurant in the Numazu Port area. It is hidden away but has long been renowned and loved, especially by the local people who work at the port, who eat there as early as 6:00 a.m., which is when it opens. Recommended dishes include Kamaage Don (rice bowl topped with boiled whitebait and salmon roe), Seafood Don, and Sanshoku Don (rice bowl topped with salmon roe, sea urchin and crab). The owner used to work at the port, so he has a sure eye for quality seafood, and his food is highly regarded by professional fishers. Be aware that the restaurant stays open only as long as supplies of seafood and other toppings last.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
