    Shizuoka Atami-shi Taharahoncho
"""Atami Railways"" refers to the light rail line that connected Odawara and Atami before the present Tokaido Main Line opened. From 1907 until it was discontinued in 1923 due to the Great Kanto Earthquake, it ran about 25 kilometers in two hours and forty minutes. Thereafter, it was used in railroad construction projects in various regions, and a car was displayed as a sample car in the Japanese National Railways Takatori Factory in Kobe City, before being sold and repaired. Currently, you can see the gallant figure of the No. 7 Engine on the sidewalk in front of Atami Station."

    Shizuoka Atami-shi Baiencho Atami Umezono
"This is a memorial museum for Shinpei Nakayama, a composer during the Taisho period who left us with children's songs such as ""Teru Teru Bozu"", ""Kata Tataki"", and ""Shabondama"". His villa, which was originally in Nishiyama-cho, Atami City, was transferred to within a plum garden and opened to the public. Featuring a relaxed, wooden construction, this villa was the place Shinpei Nakayama spent his days after moving to Atami until the day he died in 1952. Surrounded by a serene Japanese-style garden, the building interior displays precious items of Mr. Nakayama, including the piano he used for composing, sheet music he wrote, and records from the time."

Very Interesting! Notice the rare thatched-roof on the Main Hall, even though the Shoin is a modern building. There is an over 300-year old history and some connection to the Tokugawa family. The...

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
