"Located about 7 minutes on foot from Izu-kogen Station on the Izu Kyuko Line, this café and atelier offers a hands-on experience of making authentic silver jewelry by hammering a flat sheet of silver into shape. The ""mixed berry parfait"" with plenty of strawberries and blueberries is highly recommended."

The direct wholesaler shop of Mase, a long-established Japanese confectionery shop founded in 1872. It has a characteristic eaves of a flat roof which jut out considerably and the flooring made of Sanshu ceramic. In the chic, weighty interior, they continue to make their particular Japanese confections, including traditional Japanese sweets and high-grade raw confections. The Izu no Odoriko, named for the famous work of Yasunari Kawabata, Izu no Odoriko, is a great sweet representative of Izu, winning the Prime Minister Award in the 22nd National Confection Expo. The Kissho, which features white bean paste mixed of fresh egg yolk with sweet potato wrapped in strained bean paste and dough and then steamed up, is widely popular.

This dried fish store was founded back in 1865. In a section of Atami Ginza where the retro Showa period atmosphere still remains, they sell their dried fish made from meticulously selected from fresh, domestic fish taken inshore. The dried fish arrayed in the shop are all freshly taken fish, immediately dressed, and dried in natural sunlight with a thin layer of salt, just like the method in older times. By giving the fish time to fully dry in natural sunlight, they achieve a sweetness and richness that cannot be achieved with a drying machine. In order to maintain freshness, in the final stage of processing, the dried fish are frozen for an instant-another key point unique to specialty shops.

"This is a well-established yokan (sweet jellied azuki bean paste) of Atami which has persisted since the Taisho period. As a yokan maker of the purveyor for Izusan Shrine famous as the ""god of world conquest"", they continue to make their yokan which does not compromise on hand-kneading. Using 100% Atami's specialty bitter oranges, the ""Tsurukichi Yokan (Daidai)"" is a famous sweet with a characteristic elegant sweetness and slight bitterness. For the first time in the world, it received two stars in the Best Taste Award from the ITQI International Taste Testing Committee called the Michelin Guide for food. In the adjacent ""Japanese Cafe Chabo-Jin"", you can enjoy Japanese confections which were dedicated to the outer shrine of Ise Jingu, as well as honey, hotcakes, and macaron monaka with gentle coloration."

The main store of Mase, a well-established Japanese confectionery shop founded in 1872. The large wooden sign which exudes history is a landmark for this shop, where they sell traditional high-grade raw confections which reflect the seasons and baked sweets. The Izu no Odoriko is a famous representative sweet named for Yasunari Kawabata's great work Izu no Odoriko, and features walnut-filled white bean paste wrapped in shortbread dough. It won the Prime Minister Award in the National Confection Expo, and has been adored for many years as a baked sweet representing Izu. Kissho, a baked sweet that melts just right in your mouth, and the Izu mikan (summer-only), which uses new summer oranges, a fruit of Atami, are both perfect as Atami souvenirs.

This dried fish shop is located just after you exit Atami Station. Since its founding in 1949, it has sold dried goods and paste products under the motto of sticking to local production and homemade processing. The Torosaba Mirin, in which the fatty mackerel and aromatic secret Yamaroku tare (dipping sauce) whet one's appetite, is a popular item that has been covered in various media. Since it does not use anything unnecessary such as coloring agents or preservatives, you can enjoy the deep flavor in which the umami of the mackerel is still present. They carry over 200 types of alcohol in a wide variety of types, including local Atami local brewed liquor, wine, beer, and sake. Their headliner product is ""Miya no Shizuku"", which gets its name from the protagonist in Konjiki Yasha, a novel set in Atami. The daiginjo, in which 50% of the yamada nishiki rice-one of the highest quality sake rices-is polished off, offers a sophisticated, high-class taste.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
