"The Oidaira district in Hamakita Ward in the center of Hamamatsu City is famous for its Jiro persimmons, and it produces some of the largest quantities of the fruit of anywhere in Japan. This private fruit farm, surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty, grows Jiro persimmons, which are seedless and do not require soaking to remove excess astringency like other persimmon varieties. Persimmons are highly nutritious, containing a daily dose of vitamins A and C, and since ancient times it has been said in Japan that ""when the persimmons turn red, the doctors turn blue (out of fear of a lack of patients)."" The farm offers persimmon picking to the general public in November when harvest season comes around. From December through January, the farm uses its huge Jiro persimmons to make luxurious dried persimmons, a favorite Japanese treat."

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
