This sushi shop located approximately seven minutes on foot from Izu-Inatori Station is a famous shop that has been serving up kinmedai (red bream) nigiri sushi for over 30 years. Starting with the local Inatori kinmedai which is said to be particularly high quality even among Izu kinmedai, they also source wild local fish such as buri (yellowtail), hirame (flounder) and madai (another type of red sea bream) from a fishmarket that is within close walking distance. When the surface of the kinmedai is quickly seared, it takes on an exquisite taste that allows one to experience both the sweetness of the fat and the umami flavor. Enjoying sushi as a set with arajiru (fishhead soup made with kinmedai) is also popular.

This sushi restaurant is in Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture and was founded in 1960. The fish it uses as sushi toppings are mainly caught locally in Suruga Bay and obtained from Numazu Port, and many other select ingredients from the Izu region are used as well. The establishment has a high-class feel to it, like a high-end Japanese restaurant, yet the fresh seafood sushi can be enjoyed at a reasonable price. There are also popular courses such as the “takesushi” and “matsushi” courses, which feature popular items such as ikeaji rolls and rolled egg.

This seafood restaurant offers a great selection of fresh local fish caught in Izu Shimoda. Unless there is a bad catch due to poor weather, the restaurant carries no fewer than 10 types of local fish, with a focus on whitefish. Customers can enjoy sushi and kaisendon (seafood on rice) made with this local fish. While their sashimi and sushi are great, their grilled and boiled fish are delicious too. After a lazy train ride stopped in to try the local sushi. The fatty tuna sashimi was really good but the local sushi bonito was the one I will come back for.

Shizuoka Main Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
