A Japanese sweet shop close to Inuyama Castle and a 10-minute walk from Meitetsu Shin-Unuma Station and JR Unuma Station. They've been hand making uiro sweet rice jelly the traditional way since their founding in 1922. The rice flour and other ingredients are all domestically produced. They offer a number of varieties of the sweet, such as a simple white uiro made with rice and sugar, a stronger flavored dark uiro made with brown sugar, an azuki bean type with a slight scent of persimmon, and a yuzu citron variety with a refreshing citrus aftertaste. The shop was originally in Nagoya, but they changed their name in 2015 and reopened at their current location.

This shop sells thin crusted taiyaki, fish-shaped pancakes filled with bean jam. The shop is on the approach to Inaba Shrine, one of Gifu's top power spots. Carefully baked one-by-one, they're nice and crispy and the bean jam is just sweet enough. They also have limited availability items like taiyaki stuffed with Hida apple and sweet potato, and in summer they serve shaved ice smothered in fruit. When ordering several items to take away, we recommend placing your order, visiting Inaba Shrine or Gifu Zenkoji Temple, and then picking them up on your way home. It is not uncommon to see people walking away with packs of ten.

"This candy shop is a 15-minute walk from Gifu Station. They have been making handmade candies with the same recipe since their founding. Their hallmark product is Nobunaga Aruheito, a famous Gifu confectionary that has received the Prime Minister's Award. It's a reproduction of aruheito, a kind of candy that was introduced from the southern islands during the Warring States Period. These candies feature more sugar than usual varieties. They come in three flavors: ""Pure Sugar"" made simply with sugar and starch and without added flavors, ""Hakka"" with a subtle flavor and addictive aftertaste, and ""Brown Sugar"" made with high grade Okinawan brown sugar that's packed with minerals."

This shop in 3 Usaminami, Gifu City specializes in Hide beef. It became the first establishment in the prefecture to earn the right to provide raw meat for consumption, and there’s a butcher shop on the first floor. The second floor has private rooms, table seating, and reserved terrace seating. You can enjoy high-quality Hide beef from carefully selected cows as sashimi, yukhoe (raw beef topped with egg), or grilled after undergoing a dry aging process to bring out the full flavor.

  • Nagarahonke Bakuroichidai

    Gifu Pref. Gifushi Yashiro 2-7-10
This restaurant specializing in Hida beef, the most historic location of this nationwide chain, offers Saitobi beef, which is superior even to A5-grade beef. We recommend their course meals, as well as their lunches, which let you choose from one of three Hida beef main dishes: classic chargrilled barbeque, ultimate shabu-shabu (Japanese hot pot), and traditional sukiyaki. Whether it’s their fresh homemade tofu, their Okuminokojidori chicken, which gets more savory with every bite, or their locally-grown vegetables, the restaurant pays great attention to all of their ingredients, not just their beef. You’re sure to enjoy the restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere, created in part by the torch near the entrance.

On the first floor that has a cute Asian atmosphere, there is relaxing sofa-seating popular for gatherings of friends. On the second floor, there are tatami mat floor, table seating and terrace seating available. Their “Natu Goreng,” a rice dish topped with a hamburger steak, demi-glace sauce and a sunny-side up egg, is the immovable favorite. Their Thai-style yakisoba “pad thai” with shrimp, chicken and vegetables is highly recommended. They also hold regular live jazz performances. In addition, their signature staff member, the tortoise Iwao-kun, is also very popular.

Located an 11-minute walk from JR and Meitetsu Railways’ Gifu Station, this popular Japanese sweets store makes products utilizing the deliciousness of the ingredients for an amazing result. Their popular product is “hon-warabi mochi” (brack starch cakes covered in sweet soybean powder), which is fluffy and melts in your mouth, and is covered with lots of fragrantly roasted soybean powder. Please note that although this branch opens at 9:00, only this product is sold from 11:00. Cherishing natural flavors, they offer safe and delicious bagels that use no oil, milk or eggs, and use Gifu-grown wheat and Shirakami Kodama yeast. This long-established Japanese confectionary shop was founded in 1830, and is located in Imako-machi, Gifu City. They provide a traditional taste that has been guarded since it opened with the motto of things that do not change and should continue to be protected. Their specialty “Yuki Taruma” and “Miyakodori” are meringue confectionery using only select caster sugar and fresh egg whites since they were first sold in 1886. The white birds are cute, and the candy breaks apart easily and melts in your mouth. In addition, famous confectionery with elegant tastes such as the “kagariyaki ayu,” which is made in the shape of the beautiful sweetfish in the Nagara River and use mainly egg yolks, that you can purchase there are highly recommended as souvenirs.

This kappo Japanese restaurant in Yajima-cho, Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture specializes in sweetfish cuisine. Dedicated to using wild sweetfish taken locally from the Nagara River, they purchase them fresh every morning when in season. The fish's lifespan is just a year, and as they grow between summer and autumn, their flavor gradually changes. Their preparation methods alter accordingly, from segoshi (thin sliced sashimi) to sweetfish simmered nitsuke style. When sweetfish is out of season, they offer a separate seasonal menu with wild vegetables and duck.

This Japanese sweet shop founded in 1912 is a 10-minute walk from JR Gifu Station. Their Kurikomochi treats covered with chestnut powder is said to be the ultimate in Japanese confectionery. Artisans meticulously prepare them with only carefully selected domestic chestnuts. Adding the absolute minimum amount of sweetener, they leave the mochi rice cake itself unsweetened, letting the unadulterated flavor of the chestnuts shine through. Besides Japanese sweets like kuri-kinton (mashed sweet chestnuts) and strawberry daifuku (mochi rice balls with sweet filling) and strawberry custard daifuku during strawberry season, they also offer Western confections like roll cake, marble cake, baumkuchen, pie cake, and more.

Their salt grilled ayu carefully cooked over Kishu binchotan charcoal is so soft you can eat it from head to tail, including the bones. A café located in the Kinboshi Soko building close to Gifu Park at the foot of Mt. Kinka. Customers can get a sweeping view of Mt. Kinka from the café’s huge, movie screen-like windows. One of the best things about the café is the fact that you can choose what you want from the huge menu of diverse coffees covering a broad array of flavors based on your tastes and mood. The café’s traditional French confections, such as tarts made with the highest quality ingredients, are prepared by hand daily. Visitors are encouraged to have a cake set, which comes with their choice of beverage. The café also sells coffee beans, so if there’s a particularly coffee you really enjoy, you can buy the relevant beans and enjoy it at home as well.
