Gifu Takayama-shi Okuhida Hot spring village Hirayu
The oldest hot spring district in the Okuhida Onsenkyo hot spring village sprawling at the foot of Mt. Norikura. According to the Hishushi written at the end of the Edo period, the area was discovered when the mighty lord Takeda Shingen invaded the Hida region and happened to follow an old, white monkey to a hot spring. There are some 40 source springs in the district, and, depending on the location, visitors can enjoy a variety of hot spring qualities, including hydrogen carbonate springs, chloride springs, sulfur springs, and simple springs. Located close to Kamikochi and Mt. Norikura, the district is also used as a base for mountain climbing activities. Hantai eggs, boiled eggs with firm yolks and soft whites, are a popular local specialty made using the area's high temperature hot spring waters, which reach up to 90 ° C.

This natural hot spring facility is right off the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway's Shokawa Interchange. Adjacent to roadside station Sakura-no-Sato Shokawa, it's known for high temperatures and bubbling up unaided. They provide soap, shampoo, and conditioner. They also rent face and bath towels, so you can stop in without your bathing gear. They have a large wooden indoor communal bath, and their spacious outdoor bath lets you soak at your leisure while listening to the sound of the nearby waterfall and gazing up at Shokawa's starry night sky. It also has a family bath available for private use and a special needs bath.

This is a public open-air bath in Tochio Onsen, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, a gender-segregated bathing facility built on the flood plain of the Gamata River. There is nothing enclosing the direction of the river, and the views of the Northern Alps’ (Hida Mountains) splendid mountains and flowing river are breathtaking. Surrounded by rich nature, one can spend time relaxing in a truly open environment. Since it is open until evening, one can also enjoy dusk and starry sky viewing. There is a dressing room but no reception, so entry fees go into the unmanned cashbox.

The YARIMIKAN is a traditional farmhouse-styled hotel, located on the banks of the Gamata River, a pristine river running through the hot spring areas of Oku-Hida. The main building, which was originally a village headman's house built around 200 years ago, is very atmospheric. The outdoor baths situated along the banks of the Gamata River offer plenty of variety; they include mixed baths that both men and women can use, private baths, women-only baths, foot-baths, etc. In particular, the “Yarimi Bath,” a mixed outdoor bath, boasts one of the most impressive views of any outdoor bath in the Oku-Hida region, facing directly towards Yari-ga-take (Mt. Yari), one of the highest peaks in the Northern Alps.

Gifu Takayama-shi Okuhida Hot spring village Fukuchi
A quiet hot spring district located in the Okuhida Onsenkyo hot spring village in Takayama City at the foot of the Hida Mountains (Northern Alps). The area's 11 ryokan inns and minshuku bed and breakfasts each have their own unique atmosphere and charm. There is also a footbath in the area which is free to persons staying at a local lodging facility. Located inside a 300 year old Japanese home called the Yadori-yu which was moved to this area, the footbath has a rest area with an atmospheric irori sunken hearth and can be used prior to checking in or while exploring the area. The area's springs are primarily regular simple springs or hydrogen carbonate springs, although the springs operated by some of the inns have more distinctive properties. A morning market is held in the district, and here visitors will find shops selling fresh, local vegetables and other foods as well as local specialty products. Note that when the market opens differs in summer and winter; visitors are particularly recommended search out some hoba miso (miso, mushrooms, meat, and other toppings grilled over a hackberry leaf) as well as a tin of Hida sansho (Japanese pepper).

This day-use bathing facility is located in the nature-rich area of Nyu River in the middle of the North Alps. You can submerse yourself in the free carbonate hot spring with 1158 ppm, one of only a few in Japan. The hot water that springs out from 1,100 meters underground works on muscle fatigue, nerve pain, joint pain and frozen shoulders. This spring water is rich in ingredients, so care must be taken around the hot water. There is an outdoor bath and rest room. It is open during the winter season, and you can spend the finest time in the snowy field, but winter equipment is indispensable because it is in the mountains.

NAnoHANA-SANSO hot springs hotel is located in the Chubu-Sangaku National Park, with superb views of the Northern Alps. The interior of the hotel features a fashionable modern design that combines Japanese aesthetics with Western taste. The hotel has a superb location, and its outstanding hot springs baths include men’s and women’s open-air baths with great views of Shakujo-dake (Mt. Shakujo), a mixed bath with imposing rocks, and private open-air baths that are some of the airiest and most relaxing in the Oku-Hida region. The restaurant at NAnoHANA-SANSO is the first in the Oku-Hida region to incorporate an open kitchen; in a space reminiscent of a jazz bar, the master chef, his staff and the clientele chat happily with each other.

This small footbath is on Prefectural Route 475 running between Tochio Onsen and Shin-Hotaka. The nearby Kamata River is a popular spot for viewing fireflies. Lots of tourists visit during the summer to see them from the walkway along the river bank. Sometimes you can spot them from the footbath as well. It has a large umbrella-like roof, handy for inclement weather, and the large parking lot makes it a convenient rest spot while out for a drive.

    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Gifu Pref. Takayamashi Nyukawachouhikage 48
This homely hot spring inn is located in the vicinity of various tourist attractions such as Goshikigahara and Shirakawago. The inner baths are two large public baths and one hinoki (Japanese cypress) bath. In the rotenburo (open-air bath) there is also a goemonburo (cauldron bath). They offer dishes using local ingredients such as char and Hida pork, and the recommended dessert is “marugoto tomato no kakigori,” a shaved ice treat with momotaro tomatoes that can be enjoyed all year long. In addition, you can eat pufferfish dishes in the winter. All of the rooms are Japanese-style tatami mat rooms, and there is even a banquet hall. Because the hall can accommodate large groups of people, the ryokan is popular as a venue for student training camps. (Category / Hot Spring / Hot Spring Bath)

A history-leaden hot spring district known as the Little Kyoto of Hida, one of its greatest charms is its old-fashioned townscapes, which still look much as they did during the Edo period. The area's colorless, mildly alkaline and hypotonic simple springs are said to aid recovery from fatigue and illness; promote health; and alleviate muscle soreness, joint stiffness, bruises, sprains, sensitivity to cold, and chronic digestive diseases. The Takayama Festival, held each year in April and October, attracts many visitors; considered one of Japan's three most beautiful festivals alongside Kyoto's Gion Festival and the Chichibu Night Festival, it is also registered by UNESCO as an example of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
