    This Hida Takayama studio creates and sells folk arts and crafts with a focus on woodblock prints. Their popular dolls have a unique feel and are made with a technique they developed called “Mokuhan Tezome. They have a wide variety of these, including their Chinese Zodiac, Zodiac Kids, Hina Doll, and Carp Streamer series. The handmade dolls all feature rustic raw cotton dyed with Hida woodblock printing. They're steamed at a high temperature to fix the color before being stuffed with rice hulls and sewn closed. They also produce the traditional Hida votive plaques known as “Hida Matsukura Ema that have been made since the Edo period.

    This koji ferment starter shop is in Kamisannomachi, an old Hida castle town with a historic district that survives to this day. It's a 10 -minute walk from JR Takayama Station. They've been making miso and soy sauce since the Edo period with a motto of “simple and delicious. Hida's natural environment has marked large seasonal temperature changes, pure air, and clean underground water that enhance their flagship products of red miso and koji miso. Their main soy sauce varieties of four-year soy sauce, one-year soy sauce, and kibiki soy sauce draw out the flavor of their ingredients. The shop offers miso soup tastings daily.

    This sake brewery is located in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture in the middle of the old towns past the red Naka Bridge. With 200 years of history, they produce a lot of Japanese sake, including junmai ginjo (pure rice premium sake) Miyamagiku, which has umami and sweetness using Hida spring water and good quality brewer’s rice. Besides the Japanese sake shop and souvenir store, you can freely enjoy sake in the adjoining sake bar. In addition, there is also Restaurant Aji no Yohei, where you can taste Hida beef and please your mouth with juicy meat while drinking high-grade sake.

    A shop which sells local liquors, bathing powders created from sun dried mineral deposits collected from a hot spring well, Tsurunoyu natural hot spring mineral salts, and souvenirs. The shop’s “reverse hot spring eggs,” a Hirayu specialty, are boiled using hot spring waters drawn up right at the front of the shop—these tasty treats are characterized by soft egg whites, firm yolks, and a slight sulfur smell. Due to hygienic concerns, the eggs are not sold for takeout and must be eaten on the premises, but some people like to bring their own condiments to season the eggs just to their liking.

    This is where products such as the Hida classic Sansho Powder is manufactured and sold. They harvest the local specialty sansho (Japanese pepper) buds one by one by hand, and then after drying them in the shade, the sansho is dried in the sun and turned into powder with a millstone and mallet in order to keep the aroma. This sansho powder that is made with a time-consuming process that has remained unchanged since its founding suits not only eels, meat and fish but also cheese and Italian dishes, giving it the reputation of being something very addictive. Their “Sansho Shichimi,” which mixes sansho with red pepper, red cayenne pepper, hemp seed and white sesame, and their whole grain sansho, which comes with a mill to enjoy the fragrance when it is freshly ground, are both popular items.

    This local sake specialty shop is located in a corner of the old townscape of the popular sightseeing spot Hida Takayama. Using an old kominka (old house), it is lined with over 500 kinds of local sake specially selected from all 12 breweries in the Hida region. Besides the representative brands of Tenryo and Horai, there are also many premium brand-name sakes, products limited to certain breweries, and original local sake made in partnerships with breweries. They also offer local Hida beer and juice using fruit grown in Hida. In addition, there is a free tasting corner led by special staff, which is great since you can select your favorite local sake.

    This shop is ten minutes on foot from Takayama Station on the JR Takayama Main Line. They sell lots of items including the local Gifu Prefecture handcrafted talismans known as Saru Bobo and limited edition Hidacchi merchandise (Hida-Takayama's mascot with a bright red body and slightly mischievous expression). Their very popular Omoide Course Saru Bobo making workshop lets you choose the color of its body band, add writing or drawings, and then attach it with glue before giving it a vest. There is also a full-fledged Saru Bobo making program where you piece it together by using thread, needle, and glue to attach the head, body, hood, and the rest.

    This venerable traditional Japanese sweet shop established in 1926 is located in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. It is lined with simple, traditional Japanese confectionery such as seasonal namagashi (Japanese unbaked sweets) , higashi ( Japanese dry sweets that keep longer) and rakugan (a kind of dry sweets made of rice flour and sugar,etc.) You can get a sense of regionality and history from the local sweets kuriyose (chestnuts in red bean paste) and yomogi manju (red bean paste-filled steamed cakes with Japanese mugwort). Besides the namagashi and higashi offered every season, they also have traditional Takayama dagashi sweets such as kokusen (starch syrup, sesame, sweet soy flour mixed and then panned into thin sheets) and kankanbo (soy butter sticks). The flavors are gentle and nostalgic, and traditional ingredients are used like soybeans, sesame and peanuts. Their assortments of seasonal higashi with rakugan, neri-yokan (firm red bean jelly) and usuyuki (“light snow”) is recommended.

    駅前にあるお土産屋さんですが、赤カブなど高山のお土産は一通り揃います。何と言っても、高山に行ってはまってしまったさるぼぼ人形が店頭に置いてあって一緒に写真も撮れました。これが嬉しかったです。
