A 15-minute drive from Gero Station on the JR Takayama Main Line. This long standing brewery makes sake and shochu with choice rice, water, and people. The brewery's Tenryo sake is lovingly crafted by the chief brewer using Hidahomare, a local specialty rice ideal for sake making; and underground spring water from the Hida Mountains. Instilled with the spirt of brewery founder Hinoya Sahei, this sake is the embodiment of Hida. The brewery's novel products like the sparkling sweet sake Sumasuma are also popular. Visitors can tour the brewery year round for free, and also enjoy sake tasting (advance reservation required).

We were there before their renovation. The Manager speaks English and gave us a box full of tokens to try their free flow sake. Check the availability for their next brewery tour after renovation.

They sell specialty Sasamaki Yokan (sweet bean jelly wrapped in a bamboo leaf), fluffy castella (sponge cake) and hand-made rice cakes that are sold only in the winter. A famous confection in Kamioka, Sasamaki Yokan is made by hardening sweet bean jelly liquid and pouring it into kumazasa (kuma bamboo grass) that is folded like a butterfly. This sweet bean jelly has an aroma and leaf vein from a bamboo leaf clearly, and its light taste is great for gifts. It is mentioned in a haiku by one of the leading female haiku poets of the Showa period (1926-1989), Teijo Nakamura, in her book ""Furusato no Meika (Famous confectionery in hometown)."""

With a commitment to standards and flavor, they use homemade miso that's been fermented for three years made with Ryuho soybeans from Akita, producing rice crackers one by one with the same methods they've used since the beginning. While crunching away, the simplicity and warmth of the Hida locals may come to mind. These rice crackers been chosen as an official souvenir of the Gifu Tourism Alliance.
