Nature Spots in Gifu Area

  • Kanayama Megaliths
    Travel / Tourism
    Gifu Pref. Geroshi Kanayamachouiwase
A term used to refer to groups of megaliths in three locations, including one Historic Site-designated Jomon period archeological site. Several of the stones are taller than a person and at first glance they appear to simply be scattered about. However, there are indentations and lines on the stones which were clearly carved by human hands and, when connected, they reveal shapes such as the Big Dipper. At the present time, the stones are believed to have been used for astronomical observation in the Jomon period, and it is conjectured that the people who lived here over 5,000 years ago used the position of the sun to measure the time of the year.
  • Yokoya Gorge
    Travel / Tourism
    Gifu Pref. Geroshi Kanayamachoukanayama
A gorge located a 30 minute drive from the Suwa Interchange on the Chuo Expressway which was created by the clear waters of the Shibukawa River in the Tateshina Onsen hot spring district in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture. Four waterfalls can be viewed along the river’s length—the Shirataki, Futamitaki, Koyodaki, and Keimeidaki—and visitors can enjoy touring the falls while bathing in the skin-beautifying negative ions they generate. Visitors can also enjoy seasonal, natural beauty, including fresh buds in spring, cool relief from the heat in summer, fall colors in autumn and frozen waterfalls in winter. In particular, the gorge is counted as one of the most beautiful areas to walk and enjoy fall foliage in eastern Japan, and many hikers come here during autumn.
  • Mt. Ontake
    Travel / Tourism
    Gifu Pref. Geroshi Osakachouochiai
A 3,067 meter active volcano straddling the border between Nagano Prefecture and Gifu Prefecture. The westernmost mountain in Japan over 3,000 meters, the mountain is notable for its large, trapezoidal base. There are five trailheads leading up the mountain on different sides; during the climbing season, the Otaki trail is the only one which can be driven on, and visitors can use it to drive up to the Tanohara area 2,190 meters above sea level. A ropeway connects to the Kurosawa trailhead and this trail also has many mountain huts, making it relatively easy to climb. There are many leisure facilities nearby such as a ski resort and hot spring bathhouses, as well as Shinto shrines and other mystical sites, ensuring that even those not interested in mountain climbing will find many interesting things to do in the area.
  • Itadori River
    Travel / Tourism
    Gifu Pref. Sekishi Itadori
A clear river running south to north almost through the exact center of the former village of Itadori a 40 minute drive from the Mino Interchange on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway. The quality of the river’s waters is high and it is a popular destination for rafting and fishing. The area around the river is also dotted with campgrounds, and the river sees many visitors, particularly during the camping season in summer. The river’s waters are highly transparent, and a boat or raft on the river looks as if it is floating in thin air. The seasonal scenery and interplay of water and green foliage here attracts many tourists both from within the prefecture and throughout Japan.
  • Nagaragawa River
    Travel / Tourism
    Gifu Prefecture
A river which flows through the center of Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture and which has been selected as one of the 100 most renowned waterways in the country. The river has been featured in songs by Goro Noguchi and Hiroshi Itsuki and also appeared in a novel by Yasunari Kawabata. A walking path is maintained which leads upriver from the NagarabashiBridge, and during the cormorant fishing season, visitors can watch the action up close from here while Gifu Castle, lit up with large floodlights, looms in the background. Some 400 Yoshino cherries grow on the left bank of the river, and when the trees are in full bloom in early April, crowding the shoreline, the area bustles with visitors come to see the blossoms.
  • Amou Pass

Tucked away in the very center of Japan, Gifu prefecture houses mountains, old towns, and one of Japan’s greatest hot springs, Gero Onsen. A tour of the prefecture’s traditional architecture will take you from the mountain-enveloped wooden streets of Takayama to the mountain village of Shirakawago, where visitors can explore 250-year-old thatched roofed houses known as gassho-zukuri.
