This public museum operated by Gifu Prefecture specializes in modern ceramic art. It features a collection of Japanese and international ceramics dating to as early as the 19th century. It is located in Ceramic Park MINO, designed by the architect Arata Isozaki. Ceramic even finds its way into places like the ceiling and outer walls. They put effort into art education and frequently hold a variety of workshops mainly dealing with ceramics. They also hold gallery talks by curators as well as unique regular planned exhibits.

This art gallery is located a 15-minute walk from Nagaragawa Railway Minoshi Station, and exhibits the Mino City’s prize-winning autumn “Mino Washi Akari Art Exhibit.” Inside the gallery, a town with udatsu walls (good for fire protection and symbolizing wealth) is reproduced in a soft and warm light through Mino washi (traditional Japanese paper). Although the work cannot be touched, you are free to take photographs. There is also a museum shop lined with highly artistic lanterns. The wooden two-stories building is a nationally registered tangible cultural property since it is a valuable structure that is as it was in the early Showa era (1926-1989).

A MUST when in Mino. It is very beautiful. An exhibition of many lanterns and paper craft. It was my second visit here.

Located only a three-minute walk south of JR Ena Station, this museum houses works of the world-famous ukiyo-e artist, Utagawa Hiroshige. Most of the collection consists of woodblock print ukiyo-e such as “The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido” of his mature period, and the exhibits change nearly every month. In the Ukiyo-e Navi Room, a permanent installation, visitors can learn all about woodblock prints in an enjoyable way. An especially popular feature is the “Make Your Own Woodblock Print” corner, where visitors can use fake plates and apply layers of stamp ink to make their own woodblock print to take home.

Really cool museum! Three blocks from Ena train station. Inexpensive entrance fee. The historic woodcut prints on display are both beautiful and intriguing. BUT WAIT, theres more, lots more. You...

"This art museum is located a ten-minute walk from Ogaki Station's South Exit. It exhibits works and materials of the Japanese artist Tadashi Moriya, praised in his hometown as an honorary citizen of Ogaki and a recipient of the Order of Cultural Merit. ""The Melody of Rokudan Sounds in Vienna: Brahms and Countess Toda"" is his masterpiece from his prime with the theme of international exchange. It is a historical painting that depicts an encounter between east and west, with the decoration of a koto and smoke from an incense burner to the patterns of chairs and carpets that were popular at the time. This work and other difficult-to-preserve Japanese paintings are not on permanent display, but about 3,300 works are rotated and displayed every two months."

The museum houses a collection of approximately 2,500 pieces of antiques and folk art amassed over 70 years by Takayama's resident doctor, Tadaichi Fujii. The building in which the collection is displayed is a clay structure built over five years using all cypress wood in the Edoman style. The building has walls that are nearly one meter thick. The wide-ranging collection contains, among other things, Kyoho dolls made over 270 years ago, hanging scrolls by Yokoyama Taikan and Ikkyu, and Kutani and Imari ware.

This art museum is about ten minutes by car from the Setoshinano Interchange. Ichinokura is a pottery making village, and they focused on smaller items such as sake cups due to poor transportation access. The museum displays lots of pottery like sakazuki cups at their permanent and planned exhibitions. Gallery Chu shows the work of modern artists, and they have facilities dedicated to ceramics like their Sakutokan Hall where you can try working a potter’s wheel. At the Museum Shop, you can purchase Minotosui (sake and ceramic sets), choice sake, and fine quality sweets. There’s also a restaurant serving pizza from their stone oven.

The museum displays glassware produced in Japan from the end of the Edo period to the early Showa period, and the museum’s collection spans some 800 pieces. The pieces on display are extremely diverse, and include miniature lamps, shaved ice bowls, and glass timepieces; many draw the eye with their vivid coloring. The museum also has uranium glass pieces which glow with a characteristic fluorescent luster. Be sure to note the museum’s Taisho Roman-style exterior, which blends in with the surrounding townscape. The museum is closed during the New Year’s holidays and also only opens on Saturdays and Sundays from December to February.
