A popular mountain tourism destination, facilities such as hotels and motor home campgrounds can be found in the area, as well as a large number of walking paths. Events such as Mt. Norikura sunrise bus tours and starlight tours are also held in the area.

    A tourist farm which grows blueberries. The farm grows 800 blueberry plants on land as well as 2,000 in pots without the use of agricultural chemicals. The farm offers time unlimited blueberry picking and customers can also gather their harvested blueberries in a provided bag to take home. Blueberry picking is offered from mid-June to mid-October. Note that the exact date the farm opens may vary depending on weather. Visitors can also purchase potter blueberry seedlings here.

You’ll find everything from traditional lacquerware to art made using new techniques pioneered by Setsuro Takahashi, a native of Hotaka. You’ll also find Takahashi’s parents’ home, which is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property and can give you an idea about what life in Azumino was like at the time.

    "A mountain located in Hakuba Village, Kitaazumi County, Nagano Prefecture. ""Happo-one"" means ""mountain ridges in all directions,"" a reference to the spurs which extend in all directions from Mt. Karamatsu in the Hakuba Mountain Range. Many people come here to enjoy trekking, and the course is dotted with scenic spots overlooking Happo Pond and 11 of Japan's 100 most well-known mountains. Rare alpine plans and Natural Monument-designated species such as Japanese serow and ptarmigans live in the area."

    Nagano Azumino Hotaka Ariake 3618-24
    A museum located in Azumino City which introduces the history of the cultivation of the Japanese oak silkmoth. Thread made using the cocoons of the moths is produced similar to that of regular silk, but the resulting fabric is lighter and softer, and possesses a distinctive color and luster. Inside, visitors can learn about the history of Japanese oak silkmoths and their ecology. In the adjoining studio, visitors can watch as textiles are woven from the moths' cocoons. The museum's shop sells Japanese oak silkmoth silks and accessories. In addition, visitors can also see actual Japanese oak silkmoths being raised in an open breeding house on the grounds.

    We visited Azumino during the off season of March. The town bus was not running during our visit. We took a taxi to the Azumino Tensan Center. The taxi was about $23.00 US from the Hotaka station...

    A pond which reflects the Hotaka Mountain Range, Taisho Pond was formed in 1915 when Mt. Yake experienced a major volcanic eruption. The trees that once grew where the pond is now have withered away and stick up straight out of the pond’s waters; reflecting off the surface, they create a mysterious, magical sight. Taisho Pond is one of the most picturesque spots in Kamikochi.

    Nagano Azumino Hotaka 3640 Daio WASABI Nojo
    A popular activity in Azumino where you can meander down the Tadegawa River in a boat. The river flows with beautiful spring water and has been selected as one of the most famous rivers in Japan. The aquatic plants quiver in the clear water and fish can be seen swimming below. One of the highlights of the boat trip is the watermills which were the stage for a famous movie. You can enjoy the beauty of nature while paddling away with the other members in the boat. The boat trip lasts for approximately 20 minutes. Reservations for the trip can be made at the green tent at Daio Wasabi Farm, Hotaka in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture.

    水が綺麗で有名な安曇野ですがその中でも透明度が高く水草が美しい犀川をゴムボートでのんびりと下れます。ラフティングといっても決して激しくありませんので小さな子供連れでもきっと楽しめると思います。安曇野には観光スポットが沢山ありますが少し変わったアクティビティとして特に家族連れにお勧めします。

    This shrine in Nagano Prefecture’s Azumino City is frequented by believers who pray to the deity of land and sea transportation and industry. It is actually comprised of three places, the Hongu main shrine located close to JR Hotaka Station, the Okumiya rear shrine in Kamikochi and a small shrine atop the summit of Mt. Okuhotaka, and is famous as the sochinju (local Shinto deity) of the Japan Alps. Within the premises of the Hongu are the main shrine in Midono-style, a kagura hall, Wakamiya shrine, and two Japanese zelkova trees which have been designated as Azamino City Designated Natural Monuments. The Ofune Matsuri or “Boat Festival” in which boat-shaped floats adorned with Hotaka ningyo dolls are collided together takes place every year on September 27, and the event is attended by many worshippers.

    "A roadside station situated along the Chikuni Highway in Kitaotari, Otari Village, Kitaazumi County. The station sells local specialty products from Otari Village. The station's restaurant serves set meals made with stove cooked Otari-grown Koshihikari rice and other local ingredients as well as noodles, a la carte dishes, and local liquors. The station is adjoined by a bathhouse whose baths are constantly replenished ""kakenagashi"" style from a natural hot spring which offers a discount meal and bath set."

    Eastern Japan's oldest rectangular-shaped ancient tomb, it is located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. It has been designated as a national historic site and a cultural property of Nagano Prefecture. A mirror with four beasts, ancient magatama (curved bead ornaments) and other artifacts that were excavated from the ancient tomb are exhibited in the Matsumoto City Archaeological Museum. In addition, it is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, and bustles with many people who come to see the 2,000 Yoshino cherries and late-blooming yaezakura cherries when they bloom.

    A long-established lacquerware store founded in 1907, dealing mainly in Kiso lacquerware and also in various regional lacquerware such as Yamanaka, Aizu, and Echizen lacquerware. The shop displays lacquerware which can be used daily such as bowls, trays, dishes, etc. The sign marked with a lion and peony flowers is a landmark.

    松本城下の御おかげを残す中町通りにそって今なお現役で営業している漆器の専門店です。看板からして牡丹と獅子という粋なデザインで、ついつい立ち寄ってしまいます。売れている商品は正真正銘の漆細工の食器がメインなのでお手段は高価ですが、一見の価値はあります。

    This art museum is located in Hotakaariake, Azumino City. It opened in 1983 and is based on the concept of “displaying only mountain paintings at the base of the Northern Alps.” Permanent exhibits include works by Genichiro Adachi, Mizuki Kato, famous mountain painters, and currently active artists who specialize in depicting mountains.

    穂高駅前の観光案内所で借りた自転車で20分、近づくほどに看板が少なくなり右側の看板を見落とし1kmほど先まで行ってしまったが 緑に囲まれた小さな美術館に着き、お目当ての武本嘉成を楽しむことができた。

    "This old Japanese home was built in the early Edo period. At that time, it served as the residence of the Yamaguchi family, whose head was the local ""Oshoya"" or ""grand village headman"" in charge of the ""shoya"" village headmen who ruled the villages in the area. Records state that some of the lords of Matsumoto Domain even stayed at the grand residence. The highlight of the estate is the stunning Japanese garden visible from the residence' study as if a framed picture. The garden's old trees are still carefully maintained today and form beautiful scenery. The estate was also the birth home of Nihonga Japanese painter Sorin Yamaguchi and, in addition to the garden, visitors can view some of the artist's paintings."

    安曇野にある、大庄屋の旧家。国営アルプスあづみの公園の近くにあります。立派な門構えと広々とした敷地。庭園見学ができるようですが、コロナの関係か訪問時は公開はされていませんでした。

    An activity studio adjoining Vif Hotaka, a store which sells Hotaka agricultural products and other goods. Here you can learn how to make Nagano's famous oyaki buns, and soba noodles from a renowned Nagano soba noodle chef. A soba noodle restaurant operating out of an old Japanese home is located next to the studio which serve soba noodles made with buckwheat flour from Ariake. The restaurant offers two types of soba - kake soba hot noodles in broth, and cold zaru soba noodles. Both the activity studio and the soba noodle restaurant are reservation-only, and reservations must be made no later than two days in advance.

    A scenic overlook on the top of Mt. Takagari in Yasaka, Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture which offers a spectacular view of many of the Hida Mountains. A convenient 20 minutes by car from Shinano-Omachi Station, the overlook is a popular destination for enjoying beautiful and picturesque scenery. Here you can get a 360 degree panorama, from Mt. Shirouma to Mt. Jonen; the view at dusk, in particular, will take your breath away. Also a well-known date spot, the overlook has also been selected as a mecca for couples.

    大町駅から徒歩15分で山岳博物館のある公園で八重桜のバックに北アルプスのパノラマを楽しみ、登山道に入って1時間、付近No1の北アルプス大展望台に辿り着く。残念ながら車でも頂上に行ける上に、高さ約20mの展望台もある。

    You’ll find this art museum in Hokujo, Hakuba Village. The collection includes works by over 80 painters, including mountain artists Kazuo Tamura, Shinichiro Adachi and Daigoro Yamashita as well as Kiyoshi Yamashita, Yayoi Kusama, and others. The exhibits feature over 100 different works showcasing various perspectives of Hakuba and the Northern Alps (Hida Mountains). After enjoying the works, relax in the tea room while gazing at the over 300 types of flowers in the garden.

    静かな美術館でした。所蔵、展示作品はあまり多くはないですが、作品と美術館の雰囲気がマッチして楽しめました。 安曇野からの雄大な山岳風景画など大きな作品が多く結構迫力ありました。

    The Sakai collection, as it is called, started with the woodblock prints of sixth-generation Yoshiaki Heisuke Sakai. It was the10th-generation Fujiyoshi Sakai who took the works spanning a period of 200 years and established the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum in 1982 in order to share the precious collection, which includes handwritten works and woodblock-printed books, with the rest of the world. It is the largest collection of 19th-century woodblock prints in the world. It’s a minute by car from the Matsumoto Interchange on the Nagano Expressway.

    A two-minute walk from the Yasuharamachi bus stop and a 15-minute drive from the Matsumoto Interchange. This art museum can be reached by traveling from the Takahashi Family Residence the north of Matsumoto Castle and walking a short distance east along Okachimachi Street. The museum's standing collection consists of 50 pieces by Yasuka Sudo, a painter who created around 1,000 works of art up to the time of his death at age 30 on the themes of light, darkness, and life. The artist's work has won numerous awards at events such as the Tokyo International Mini Print Triennial and the France-Japan Multinational Contemporary Art Exhibition. The museum also holds special exhibitions. Elementary and junior high school students, as well as students attending a high school in the prefecture, can enter the museum for free.
