This yoshoku (Western-style Japanese food) restaurant located approximately 10 minutes on foot from JR Matsumoto Station is a long-established venue that has continued to keep the same tastes since its founding in 1933. Time seems to pass by slowly inside the retro space with its well-worn furniture as jazz and classical music play in the background. Their famous item is the Beef Stew that uses a slow-cooked demi-glace sauce. They also offer many popular beloved menu items that surpass the era such as omuraisu, hayashi (hashed) rice and Bankara Katsu Curry (rice with pork cutlet).

Nagano Pref. Aduminoshi Hotakariake 8053-4

This soba restaurant in Nagano Prefecture’s Azumino City is so popular that the reservation book inside the store fills up before the restaurant opens. The interior shows their attention to detail such as tables using old wood and items handmade by artists, all within a dignified environment comprised of an old storehouse with thick earthen walls and wooden beams. The zaru soba which uses the flower buds of wasabi as a condiment is an exquisite item that will make you want to eat more of thanks to its gentle rich-tasting tsuyu sauce and fragrance of the wasabi. The Yukibana Zaru Soba that is topped with plenty of tororo (grated yam) as well as gold dust is also popular. They have an extensive field, soba field, and garden in which hydrangea and cherry trees bloom, which make for nice places to enjoy a stroll either while waiting or after the meal.

Nagano Pref. Matsumotoshi Chuou 2-2-15

This long-established western sweets shop founded in 1884 was given a new building in 1998, and features a simple yet innovative design that blends in to the townscape of the Matsumoto castle town. Their representative sweets are the steamed confection Kaiun-oimatsu and Japanese style nougat Shinmito. With a cute swan as its icon, their western-style sweet Swan Lake is also popular and is frequently featured in magazines. They have a soft ice cream robot inside the store, and guests can purchase their treat by operating the touch panel themselves. The closest station is Matsumoto Station.

以前、頻繁に松本を訪れていたころに1、2度来たことがありますが、職場へのお土産を買うために久しぶりに訪れました。以前と違い、イートインコーナーが充実していました。何種類か常温で持ち帰れるお菓子を買いましたが、値段はやや高め。味は間違いないです。

Cafe Chiiann is a small cafe located on a narrow street off Nakadori in the city of Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. It is housed in a restored Meiji period storehouse. The interior is a pleasant space filled with the warmth of wood, and it is popular with female customers. The menu includes pots of tea, carefully brewed drip coffee, and superb sweets that go well with fine tea or coffee. It is an ideal place to ignore the passage of time and just relax.

We stumbled across this cafe (down a side alley) and had a very nice coffee and scone. It has very modern decor and is in a restored warehouse which makes it well worth a visit.

This restaurant located on the second floor of the Gosenjaku Hotel facing the Azusa River in Azumi Kamikochi of Nagano Prefecture’s Matsumoto City is open to non-hotel guests only during lunch time. Inside the dignified atmosphere with antique-style furniture from Matsumoto Mingei Kagu (Matsumoto Folkcraft Furniture) they offer up authentic French cuisine that is the pride of the hotel. This bar with the appearance of a hideaway is approximately 13 minutes on foot from Matsumoto Station. Upon opening the door to the storehouse-style building, guests will step into a modern relaxed space that unfolds before their eyes. On the shelves inside are more than 100 types of single malt whiskey, and they offer a menu of more than 300 types of alcoholic beverages including cocktails. In addition to the standard Sidecar cocktail which shares the bar’s name, there are also cocktails made with fresh fruit that are popular among female customers. This restaurant that is located on the Yamabe Winery in the Iriyamabe district of Nagano Prefecture’s Matsumoto City allows patrons to try wine made completely from Matsumoto-produced grapes as well as Western dishes based on Italian cuisine. They are very particular about their Shinshu-produced meat and fresh vegetables that are sourced every day and the store motto is local production for local consumption. Their staple menu item of Shinshu beef cheek stewed in red wine uses plenty of Yamabe Wine’s Merlot and is an exquisite dish that is stewed until it becomes soft. This is a cafe restaurant joint established with the brewery that makes local Azumino beer Hotaka Beer, set in a location overlooking the wonderful Northern Alps (Hida Mountains) and calm rural landscape. Aiming to be a restaurant where one can enjoy Azumino cuisine with all five senses, they offer French-based creative cuisine using local produce and fresh herbs. The full cafe menu contains aromatic home-roasted coffee and homemade gelato. They also sell Leonidas chocolate, a brand which serves the Belgian royal family.

The owner trained at a famous shop in Sapporo before operating a soup curry shop in Yokohama and moving it to Azumino in 2013. The soup curry is deeply slow-cooked for a rich flavor, popular enough to see lines form even during lunch on weekdays. The café’s sweets and dishes, laboriously prepared by the chef using local ingredients, are highly reviewed. Particularly popular menu options include the slow-stewed beef stew and the sweets sampler, which comes with three or four sweets. A corner of the café is a shop space selling natural stone accessories and knickknacks. The picturesque scenery of Azumino stretches out from the windows on the second floor, and here you can relax and forget the passage of time.
