    Nagano Minamisaku-gun Sakuho Machi Hozumi 1429-1
    An art museum which displays drawings by Togyu Okumura, an artist who stood at the top of the Japanese painting world. The entirety of the museum's collection was donated by Okumura; encompassing 207 sketches and calligraphy works including those created by the artist, the content of the museum's exhibit is changed three times a year. Okumura was active throughout his life, paining until the age of 101, and here visitors can come in contact with the artist's work in its rawest form.

    佐久穂町出身かと思ったら、戦時中疎開されていたそうです。素描画がたくさん展示されています。二階のシャンデリアや格天井、柱時計のカチカチいう音が、とても素敵でした。お庭も歩けます。

    The Usuda Star Dome lets visitors enjoy a genuine stargazing experience, with a reflecting telescope featuring a 60-centimeter aperture being the main attraction. The “eyelid dome” and “sliding roof” where the telescopes are set up are bigger than normal domes and display countless stars in the night sky between observation sessions. When the weather isn’t good for stargazing, you can enjoy a star slideshow. It’s about a 20-minute drive from the Sakuminami Interchange on the Chubu-Odan Expressway.

    運動公園を通り過ぎた山頂付近にあるこじんまりとした天文台。夏は観測会を開催しているので調べてから行くべし。駐車場脇にキャンプできるスペースもあるし周辺の森も散策にオススメ。

  • Kumano Kotai-jinja Shrine

    Located at the top of Usui Pass, at an elevation of 1200 meters, is an historical old shrine that is said to have built by Yamato Takerunomikoto who appears in the legend of the Kojiki · Nihon Shoki. The shrine was built on the border between Nagano Prefecture and Gunma Prefecture, and is unique, unparalleled nationally in that it is one shrine servicing two religious corporations.
  • Kitamuki-kannon Temple

    This Buddhist temple was established in 825 by Ennin, the head priest of the Enryaku-ji Temple. The temple was frequently witness to fires and the current temple was rebuilt in 1721. Unusually for a temple in Japan, the main hall was built facing to the north, and it said that by worshipping here and at the south-facing Zenkoji Temple, one can achieve happiness both in this life and after one’s passing. The grounds contain a sacred katsura tree (Aizen Katsura) that is 1,200 years old and which is revered for the luck which brings in finding marriage. A 12-minute walk from Bessho-Onsen Station.
  • Tatsuoka Castle Goryokaku

    The ruins of Tatsuoka Castle are a 20-minute drive from the Saku-Minami Interchange, next to Goryokaku Park and the Goryokaku Deai Museum. The ruins were designated a National Historic Site in 1934. It is also known as Kikyo Castle. It is one of only three five-sided castles built in Japan, the others being in Hakodate and Tatsuoka. It was built in the latter days of the Edo period by Matsudaira Norikata, the daimyo of Tanoguchi. It was demolished in 1872 after the feudal system was abolished. Even now, the moat and part of the kitchen remain. Those who want to tour the kitchen area should make reservations ahead of time.

    Musée PEYNET is located within Karuizawa Taliesin. On display are personal painting tools and original paintings by the French artist Raymond Peynet. Here you can see the “Lovers” series of works painted by Peynet. Different exhibitions and events are held three times a year. The building makes use of the atelier villa designed by Czech architect Antonin Raymond. Opening times vary depending on the time of year so please check in advance.

    高原文庫に出かけた際ン十年ぶりに立ち寄った。ペイネのほのぼのとした世界が好きでこれまで何冊か知り合いの若者にささやかな結婚プレゼントとして差し上げた。今回は生誕100年記念として娘さんが所蔵していた原画の公開もありその他初期の作品をも拝見することができた。

    This Jizo (guardian deity of children) statue is along the approach to Narita-san Yakushiji Temple located in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. It was erected in 2003 as a symbol of health and longevity. At the Sanmonichi held on the second Saturday of every month, seasonal vegetables, fish and a variety of other items are sold, and it is visited not only by local residents but also many tourists.

    A 20-minute drive from the Saku-minami Interchange. This memorial art museum is located next to Goryokaku Park right next to Tatsuoka Castle Ruins and displays the works of Gozo Kawamura, a sculptor who was born in 1884 in what is now Usuda, Saku City. Visitors can view Kawamura's works from a variety of periods in his career, including before and after he traveled to the United States and when he served as the top art advisor at Yokosuka Base. Sculptures such as his terracotta figure of his friend bacteriologist Hideyo Noguchi and a bust of GHQ Diplomatic Director George Atcheson, Jr. hint at the historical context in which the artist lived. Those who would like to receive a guided tour are encouraged to contact the museum in advance.

    一部では牛の彫刻で有名な川村吾蔵。冬季には1週間に一人くらいしか来館者が無いらしい。臼田町が接地した博物館。他人事だが採算が心配だ。五稜郭のついでに是非立ち寄ってやってください。

    A music hall located in Yagasaki Park standing on National Route 18 in Karuizawahigashi, Karuizawa Town. The hall was built with donations from former Sony President Norio Ohga. The facility has a 784 seat hall and is used for a variety of performances with a focus on classical music.

    A museum situated in a corner of Shinano Kokubunji Temple Historic Site Park. The museum was opened in 1980. The museum displays pottery and roof tiles discovered at the former site of the Shinano Kokubunji Temple dating to between the prehistoric period to the Heian period, and here visitors can come in contact with the ancient history of Ueda and Chiisagata County. The museum's collection also includes replicas of ancient Chinese roof tiles and somin shorai tower-shaped talismans gathered from across Japan. The temple is a renowned destination where visitors can experience the atmosphere of Japan's ancient temples. The museum also holds classes for local residents and history activities for elementary and junior high school students each year.

    奈良時代、上田が信州の中心地だったそうで国分寺の資料などがあります。入館料は250円、館内の撮影は禁止なので投稿しませんが、来館者の中には平気で撮影している方がいました。こういう人間を見ると残念ですね。

    A Buddhist temple located in Shiono, Miyota Town, Kitasaku County, Nagano Prefecture. Records state this ancient temple was founded in 586. It is believed that this is the place where Koga Saburo, a figure in a local Suwa legend concerning the origins of Suwa Taisha Shrine, returned from the depths of the earth as a dragon, and each year in July the temple holds a dragon enlightenment ceremony during the Shinshu Miyota Ryujin Matsuri festival.

    A four-minute walk from the Mochizuki bus stop and a 30-minute drive from the Saku Interchange and the Tobu-Yunomaru Interchange. Built on the site of a troop headquarters in the former Nakasendo Road post station town of Mochizuki-shuku, this museum introduces the history and culture of the Mochizuki area. The museum has three exhibition rooms. Exhibition room 1 covers the prehistoric to the Warring States period, while exhibition room 2 reveals how the area looked when it was a prosperous post station town. Exhibition room 3 has exhibits on modern life in the area. With an advance reservation, visitors can learn how to make a magatama comma-shaped stone jewel.

    中山道の望月宿本陣跡に建てられた資料館です。館内にはいると古代の生活や文化、望月宿の繁栄の様子、それに地域の近代の民族など色々知ることが出来て意義深かったです。

    "Saku Municipal Tenrai Museum is located about a seven-minute walk from the Mochizuki bus stop. Built in the style of a traditional warehouse, Japan's first art museum devoted to calligraphy and a memorial to the Meiji Period calligrapher Hidai Tenrai is near the remains of the Mochizuki clan's troop lodgings and the Mochizuki History and Folklore Museum. Some of Tenrai's finest works are on display. He rediscovered old calligraphy manuals and is known as ""the father of modern calligraphy."" In addition to his works, visitors can also see related materials, such as the actual implements he used, and the calligraphic works of his wife and pupils."

    書道家の比田井天来の業績をたたえた記念館らしいけど、書道に興味がないので書道に造詣の深い義兄を案内がてら訪問しました。遠方から来られた方は記念碑のある公園と生家も尋ねられることをお勧めします。

    The museum is located next to the Osawa Sake Brewery Folk Museum, which was renovated from the Osawa family's brewery where the oldest sake in Japan was discovered. The museum was built to commemorate the 77th birthday of the late Kunio Osawa, a painter from the family who served as a member of the Japan Mountain Forest Art Association. In the warmth of the gentle wood, the museum exhibits works by 74 members of the Japan Forest Art Association, including "Sanctuary," a work that won the Minister of Education's Encouragement Prize.

    入場料が無料なのに釣られて余り期待せずに訪問しましたが、意外と山々の絵が素晴らしかったです。周辺の街並みも素晴らしく隠れた名所とも言えそう。もっと世の中に知られても良い場所なんじゃないかな。

    An art museum which displays wood carvings by Chiharu Ozawa and his son Toshiharu, two renowned folk artists. The museum building is a tatch room structure which was built in the snowy region of Yanma in Niigata and later moved here and remodeled; the hipped roof building mixes both Japanese and Western elements. The spacious museum is filled with more than 1,500 examples of folk art, including decorative frames and basins, boxes of various sizes, partitioning screens, all manner of trays, confectionary boxes, bookends, and magazine racks. The museum's collection of 1,200 wooden sculptures gathered from around the world are also well worth a look. Here visitors can have fun learning about the traditions and history of folk art.

    尾澤千春、敏春親子の作品と世界の木彫人形などが、所狭しと展示されています。また、展示されている建物も古民家を移築したもので楽しめます。

  • Kyu Mikasa Hotel

    A historic building located in Karuizawa Town. This hotel was built by the industrialist Naoyoshi Yamamoto in 1906. Purely Western in design, the interior is decorated with accoutrements that were both cutting edge and of the highest class at the time, including a chandelier with electric lights and a carpet made in England. Prominent men such as Eiichi Shibusawa, Fumimaro Konoe, and Takeo Arishima once stayed here at what was called “the Rokumeikan of Karuizawa,” a name which alludes to the cultural cachet of the hotel. The hotel remained in operation until the 1970 and was designated a national Important Cultural Property in 1980.

    The Old Missionary House is about a 25-minute drive from the Ueda-Sugadaira Interchange, next to Inishie no Oka Park. Built in 1904 and later moved to its present location, the building housed women who were Methodist missionaries from Canada, affiliated with Shinzancho Church. Originally it was next to the large Baika Kindergarten, and a training school for nannies was established there, so that it became a regional center for training daycare workers. Built in an early American colonial style, it is a highly valued building.
  • Arafune Shusse Fudoson Temple

    This Buddhist shrine in Uchiyama, Saku City sit on at the foot of the 1,423-meter-tall Mt. Arafune, which straddles the border between Nagano and Gunma prefectures. The deity it enshrines is believed to be the Buddhist monk Kukai. Many mountain climbers visit the shrine as it is located at the Mt. Arafune trailhead.

    "This ruined castle, one of only two Western-style star forts in Japan, was also known as ""Bellflower Castle"" due to the resemblance of its shape to a Chinese bellflower. Today, it is a nationally-designated Historic Site. The fortress was demolished in 1872 after Tatsuoka Domain was abolished. The castle's moat, earthen walls, and kitchen building still stand, and the grounds are used as-is as Taguchi Elementary School. With an advance reservation, visitors can view the interior."

    The symbol of Utsukushigahara Highland, a roughly 2,000-meter-high plateau at the end of the Venus Line. While it has a 360-degree panoramic view, it also gets a lot of fog. Equipped with a bell, the tower was built to help hikers lost in the fog. Towering six meters high at the center of the highland, it's also the largest literary monument in Japan. The poet Ozaki Kihachi loved Utsukushigahara, and his poetry is carved into the southern side of the tower. There's also a relief of Yamamoto Shunichi's face on the northern side. He was responsible for a mountain trail leading to Utsukushigahara.
