  • Shiga Kusatsu Road

    This mountain skyline that connects Shiga Kogen and Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture is a popular driving course. It is part of National Route 292 and many tourists visit for long holidays and to see the autumn leaves. The Shibu Pass, the border between Gunma Prefecture and Nagano Prefecture, reaches an altitude of 2,172 meters. The Shibu Pass Hotel on the border is famous as a spot where you can come and go between the prefectures inside the hotel. The road is closed to traffic for the winter season between late-November to late-April.

    A mountain sightseeing road located in Yamanouchi Town, Shimotakai County, Nagano Prefecture. The 41-kilometer road connects the Yudanaka Shibu Onsen hot spring district in Nagano Prefecture with the Kusatsu Onsen hot spring district in Gunma Prefecture. Along the road, visitors can see spectacular views of the Hida Mountains (Northern Alps), the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, and Mt. Fuji, and the beauty of the scenery makes it a popular route to cruise. The road is closed to traffic from early November to late April.

    An observatory and parking area located a 50-minute drive from the Shinshu-Nakano Interchange on the Joshin-Etsu Expressway. Situated part way up Mt. Yokote, the Yokoteyama Skylator and Yokoteyama Lift operating just beyond the parking area can be used to reach the top of the mountain. The observatory is the perfect place from which to take in the abundant natural beauty and seasonal scenery of the Shiga Highlands. In fall, vivid autumn foliage delights the eyes of the many tourists who come here. The observatory is closed in winter but visitors can enjoy snowy landscapes if snow happens to accumulate in the area before this time.
  • Goriyaku Walking Course

    This is a 15-minute walk from the Shinshu Nakano IC of the Joshinetsu Expressway via the Route 292 bypass, passing through the mountains behind Shibu Onsen town, which has flourished as a therapeutic hot spring resort and inn since ancient times. The path is also attractive for its fresh greenery in summer and autumnal foliage in fall.
  • Obuse's Open Gardens

    Obuse's open gardens were started in 2000 with the aim of using flowers to promote community and to promote the image of Obuse as a town of flowers to area visitors. The open gardens are entirely voluntary, created on the initiative and good will of each garden's owner. Many of the gardens allow people to freely enter them; note that the gardens are situated on the land of private homes, so please take care be mindful of your manners and have fun interacting with others through flowers!

    The Jinyakoji is a pleasant sightseeing spot with calm rows of houses, a historic alley where the Edo Shogunate's deputy magistrate's office was once located, and you can feel the vestiges of those days; the camp's markers and the old stone shrine of Jinyan Inari (Shrine of Inari) remain as they were during the Edo period. The "Japanese Light Museum" located at the end of Jinya Lane is also a must-see.

    Kuri no Komichi is a promenade made from chestnut timber, with trees and chestnuts transplanted from the chestnut field of Obusedo. As Obusedo is a location famous for chestnuts the atmosphere of the road is fittingly nostalgic and just taking a walk there is enjoyable.
  • Morokoshi (Corn) Kaido Street

    During the corn harvesting season from late July through early August, corn is sold along the “Morokoshi (Corn) Kaido Street” at a local produce direct sales store. Due to the extreme temperature difference between the afternoon and evening in Shinanomachi, it is said that the corn’s sugar levels increase. The freshly picked corn is sweet and juicy, and you can grill and eat it on the spot, making it a popular destination.
  • Kanman Falls Observation Deck

    This observation platform is along National Route 292 in Hirao, Yamanouchi Town. It offers an amazing view of the great Kanman Falls between the ravine, with a height of 107 meters and a width of 20 meters. Visiting during the fall foliage or new bloom seasons is recommended.

You can enjoy beautiful scenery every season such as cherry blossoms in spring and the area covered in snow in winter, but especially the scenery of changing colors of the autumn leaves is superb.
