    A mountain sightseeing road located in Yamanouchi Town, Shimotakai County, Nagano Prefecture. The 41-kilometer road connects the Yudanaka Shibu Onsen hot spring district in Nagano Prefecture with the Kusatsu Onsen hot spring district in Gunma Prefecture. Along the road, visitors can see spectacular views of the Hida Mountains (Northern Alps), the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, and Mt. Fuji, and the beauty of the scenery makes it a popular route to cruise. The road is closed to traffic from early November to late April.

    "This memorial hall introduces the achievements and life of Tatsuyuki Takano, the Japanese literature scholar who wrote the lyrics to the songs ""Momiji"" (autumn leaves), ""Haru no Ogawa"" (spring stream) and ""Furusato"" (hometown), and is located in the former Nagata Elementary School where he used to teach. There are video materials and exhibition materials, and monuments engraved with the lyrics to ""Furusato"" and ""Momiji"" are on the premises."

    This tourist facility is on Prefectural Route 66 in Okuyamada, Takayama Village, Kamitakai County. It has a sales corner for local products, a footbath, a tea room that serves light fare, an event plaza, an exhibition space, and more. The second floor has a Japanese-style room that you can use for a rest after a visit to Oyu, the adjacent hot spring facility. A tourist office provides area information as well as help with accommodation, making it a great starting point for exploring Takayama Village.

    信州高山温泉郷の、山田温泉大湯の向かいにある、観光案内所。外に足湯があり、中は観光案内所があり、地域のものを販売しています。このあたりは、たくさんの温泉地があり、温泉めぐりが楽しめるところですが、情報発信や湯巡り手形のようなものもなく、訪問しずらいところです。こちらの場所がそういう役割を担っていただけることを期待したいです。

    This spring belches white steam along the Shiga Kusatsu Kogen route. It has been designated a Natural Monument and is often referred to as “firefly hot spring” because of the fireflies that can be observed here, making for an enchanting sight.

    志賀高原の横手山スキー場から帰る際にあったので寄ってみた。 この周辺は硫黄の温泉エリアで、ほたる温泉というのがあって、そこの源泉になっている。と言ってニュージーランド・ロトルアの大噴泉みたくなっているか?といわれれば、ただ煙(水蒸気)が出ているだけと、その手前に温泉看板があるぐらい。 特に見るモノもない。駐車スペースが2台分がなんとかあるぐらい。

    Akiyama Village Open Air Museum of Traditional Preserved Farmhouses is located in the village of Sakae, Shimominochi County, Nagano Prefecture, about an 80-minute drive from either the Toyota-Iiyama Interchange on the Joshinetsu Expressway or the Shiozawa Ishiuchi Interchange on the Kan-Etsu Expressway. The ancestral home of the Fukuhara family in Koakazawa was renovated in 1975 and has been preserved and put on display. The house was built about 230 years ago with a thatched roof in the chumonzukuri style, with a central entryway that juts out from the main structure. Visitors learn about the history of the famine that struck the village in the Kyoho Era (1716-1736) and about housing and lifestyles in the late Edo Period (18th and early 19th centuries). Sightseers are free to wander around the building during the hours that it is open.

    "Suzaka Historical Building Garden lies inside Suzaka Art Park in the city of Suzaka. A number of buildings of major historical value have been moved here or restored. At the Nagayamon entrance gate is part of the townhouse of the craftsman Koshi Jusaburo, popularly known as ""the king of yarn making,"" built in 1897, moved to the park, and restored. It has been designated a Suzaka City Tangible Cultural Property. In addition, visitors can see Machiya-style houses from the Edo period and a temple school from 1865. During the annual Hinamatsuri doll festival, 1,500 dolls representing ancient courtiers are displayed here."

    A highland surrounded by the Five Peaks of Northern Nagano, Mt. Iizuna, Mt. Kurohime, Mt. Togakushi, Mt. Myoko, and Mt. Madarao. Located at an altitude of about 900 meters, it has a lush natural environment with alpine plants, plants found at lower elevations, birds, insects, etc. You can enjoy the great outdoors there year-round with the changing seasons. This includes mountain cherry trees and azaleas in spring, hydrangea and insects in summer, vivid foliage in fall, and the snowy landscape of winter. There are various facilities like a golf course, campground, athletic field, and a petting zoo in the area around Lake Reisenji. The highland is a fun day out for everyone from kids to grown-ups.

    An outdoor research facility which belongs to Shinshu University's Faculty of Education, located a 40-minute drive from the Shinshu-Nakano Interchange. All are welcome to enter the garden, and admission is free. Located in a special conservation district in a national park at the northern foot of Mt. Shiga, here visitors come in contact with the natural abundance of the Shiga Highlands and have fun learning about the area and its ecology. There's a 3.5 kilometer long walking path, a rock garden where around 50 varieties of Japanese alpine plants are grown, and a museum with mounted examples of animals living in the park and other exhibits.

    "The marshland between Mt. Shiga and Mt. Hachi can be reached by car from the Shinshu-Nakano IC of the Jyoshinetsu Expressway in about 40 minutes on the ""Pond Tour Course,"" one of the most popular trekking courses in Shiga Kogen. 60 or so ponds are scattered throughout the area, which increase or decrease depending on the weather, etc. A variety of marsh plants such as Mizubashou and Hime Rhododendron can be seen in the marshland, which is designated as a natural monument by the prefecture. A wooden pathway runs through the wetlands to the northern end of the trail, which leads to the Onuma Pond area."

    The Shiga Kogen wetlands, located in the Kita-Shinano area of Shiga Kogen, are a high-altitude marsh formed by the drying up of the former bottom of Lake Shiga, and are designated as a natural monument by the prefecture. The best time to see cotton grass, which looks like it is wearing a white cotton cap, is from early June to early July.

    An observatory and parking area located a 50-minute drive from the Shinshu-Nakano Interchange on the Joshin-Etsu Expressway. Situated part way up Mt. Yokote, the Yokoteyama Skylator and Yokoteyama Lift operating just beyond the parking area can be used to reach the top of the mountain. The observatory is the perfect place from which to take in the abundant natural beauty and seasonal scenery of the Shiga Highlands. In fall, vivid autumn foliage delights the eyes of the many tourists who come here. The observatory is closed in winter but visitors can enjoy snowy landscapes if snow happens to accumulate in the area before this time.

The Takatengahara Summer Lift, available during the green season, is a 4-seater high-speed lift that allows you to enjoy a speedy walk in the air while viewing the seasonal flowers and grasses in bloom at your feet.

    A 50-minute drive from the Shinshu-Nakano Interchange on the Joshin-Etsu Expressway. At Ishi no Yu in the Shiga Highlands, you can watch Genji fireflies, a large variety of firefly which only lives in Japan. One of only a few firefly varieties in the world to spend its larval stage, Genji fireflies are an essential part of summertime nights in the Shiga Highlands. The Iwakurazawa River in Ishi no Yu is known as the highest habitat for Genji fireflies in Japan. In recognition of its uniqueness, the area was designated a National Natural Monument in 2008.

    Located in Shimotakai-gun, Nagano Prefecture, this is one of the mountains that make up the Shiga Kogen Plateau, and can be reached by taking the Higashidateyama Tenku Course, a 6-minute gondola ride from Hambo Onsen Hot Spring. Near the summit is the Higashidateyama Alpine Botanical Garden, which is home to 500 species of alpine plants native to Shiga Kogen.

    The pond is located in Shiga Kogen, Nagano Prefecture, and was named for its resemblance to a musical instrument, the biwa (Japanese lute). The path is 2 meters wide and fully paved, allowing visitors to take a leisurely stroll while enjoying the seasonal scenery of fresh greenery and autumn leaves.

    This is a 15-minute walk from the Shinshu Nakano IC of the Joshinetsu Expressway via the Route 292 bypass, passing through the mountains behind Shibu Onsen town, which has flourished as a therapeutic hot spring resort and inn since ancient times. The path is also attractive for its fresh greenery in summer and autumnal foliage in fall.
  • Maeyama Summer Lift

    A lift located 45 minutes from the Shinshu-Nakano Interchange on the Joshin-Etsu Expressway which connects the Hotaru Onsen bus stop and the top of Mt. Maeyama via a five-minute ride. The lift makes it easy to enjoy the view from the top of the mountain; the mountaintop can also be used as the starting point of the Ike Meguri Course, one of the most well-known hiking courses in the Shiga Highlands. It's a five minute walk from the lift to the lovely Shibuike pond via a marsh. Thereafter, the trail continues for an additional 10 kilometers, finally stopping at Onuma Pond, a popular tourist destination due to its sparkling emerald green waters. The lift is closed in winter from mid-November to late May.
