Kasatori Avenue of Pines is about a 30-minute drive from the Saku Interchange or 60 minutes from the Suwa Interchange, running from about 1 kilometer west of the old Ashidajuku post station on the Nakayama Road (one of the five great roads of the Edo period) to Kasatori Pass. The Avenue of Pines is about 2 kilometers long with about 60 pines. It is said that in 1602, the shogunate distributed 753 pine seedlings to the Komoro clan and that they were planted in the surrounding villages. The pines are anywhere from 150 to more than 300 years old, and even now, one can appreciate that classic scenery. The Avenue of Pines has been designated a Prefectural Natural Monument, and it is being protected and enhanced as part of Matsu Namiki Park.

Sasayaki no Komichi (whispering lane) is a path alongside the Yagasaki River. The murmur of the stream, surrounded on both sides by Japanese andromeda plants, is a pleasure to the ears. It is also the stage of Tatsuo Hori's novel, Beautiful Village. The sunshine through the leaves of the acacia trees is beautiful.

Nagano Areas

Nagano prefecture is an exciting mix of mountains, hot spring monkeys, and preserved Edo history. At the heart of the Japanese Alps, Nagano is one of the country’s most popular destinations, whether in winter for its snow sports and the much-loved Jigokudani Monkey Park or in the warmer months for discovering the undulating hills on foot. For fantastic Edo architecture, head to the Kiso Valley for a 60-kilometer stretch of quaint wooden buildings that marked the Nakasendo route 200 years ago.
