    "The road which started at the sea or the final stops of riverboats from which salt was carried inland were often known as ""salt roads."" The Chikuni Kaido road existed before such salt transportation began to be implemented and extends from Matsumoto to Itoigawa. There are many route plans for the road which break it up into sections to be walking while taking in scenic and historic places along its length."

The dolls are carried in a palanquin and paraded in a procession.

    Kuri no Komichi is a promenade made from chestnut timber, with trees and chestnuts transplanted from the chestnut field of Obusedo. As Obusedo is a location famous for chestnuts the atmosphere of the road is fittingly nostalgic and just taking a walk there is enjoyable.

    Sasayaki no Komichi (whispering lane) is a path alongside the Yagasaki River. The murmur of the stream, surrounded on both sides by Japanese andromeda plants, is a pleasure to the ears. It is also the stage of Tatsuo Hori's novel, Beautiful Village. The sunshine through the leaves of the acacia trees is beautiful.

    During the corn harvesting season from late July through early August, corn is sold along the “Morokoshi (Corn) Kaido Street” at a local produce direct sales store. Due to the extreme temperature difference between the afternoon and evening in Shinanomachi, it is said that the corn’s sugar levels increase. The freshly picked corn is sweet and juicy, and you can grill and eat it on the spot, making it a popular destination.
  • Kanman Falls Observation Deck

You can enjoy beautiful scenery every season such as cherry blossoms in spring and the area covered in snow in winter, but especially the scenery of changing colors of the autumn leaves is superb.
  • Hokkoku Kaido Yanagimachi

    A street located in the center of Ueda City. Situated along the Hokkoku Kaido, an ancient highway, in the Edo period, the street was lined with many inns, merchants, and dry goods stores; in the Meiji period, the sericulture industry also flourished here. Today, the street still retains much of this Edo period atmosphere, but is now occupied by many restaurants, bars, cafes, and shops offering Shinshu soba noodles, local liquors, and tea. Visitors can feel the history of the area as they explore the street.

  • Momosuke Bridge

    A bridge spanning the Kiso River situated along the Nakasendo Highway in Yomikaki, Nagiso Town, Kiso County. The bridge was built in 1922 to transport material to build a hydroelectric power plant. Thereafter, the bridge was used by local residents, eventually falling into disrepair and almost being demolished due to age. The bridge, however, was recognized as an important piece of heritage from Japan's modernization period and was restored to its former glory. The surrounding area is maintained as a park.
  • Tsuetsuki Pass Observatory

    This mountain pass is in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture. There is a tea house at the top of the pass, as well as a free observation deck. From there you get a sweeping view from the Yatsugatake Mountain's Kirigamine Highland, all the way to the Northern Japan Alps. In the evening, visitors are treated to the magical sight of Lake Suwa bathed in red light as the sun sets behind the Northern Alps.

The nearby parking area, the furthest regular vehicles are allowed to travel, is a renowned destination for fall foliage viewing, and in the autumn, visitors can enjoy the contrast between the dam, lake, and colorful leaves.
