  • Okotto Suwa Shrine Upper Shrine

    A Shinto shrine located in Nagano Prefecture. One of the auxiliary shrines of Suwa Taisha Shrine, the shrine holds its own Onbashira Festival in line with Suwa Taisha Shrine's Onbashira Festival held once every seven years. The Shaden main shrine building was once the Heihaiden worship hall of the what later became Suwa Taisha Shrine which was later moved here, but this burned down in 1948; the current building is a reconstruction and thus only its original Heihaiden is designated an Important Cultural Property. Visitors can only view the Heihaiden and Honden front shrine beyond a fence, but the stunning original carvings on the buildings can be seen.
  • Kosuge Shrine

    A Shinto shrine with a long and prosperous history once counted as one of the three great ascetic training centers in northern Nagano. The shrine was established around 1,380 years ago during the reign of Emperor Jomei (629-641). The rear main shrine, rear shrine attached palace, and the Kosuge Hashiramatsu event have been designated National Important Cultural Properties. The shrine grounds also encompass numerous other structures designed Cultural Properties by Nagano Prefecture and Iiyama City.
  • Chikuni Suwa Shrine

    This Shinto shrine is famous for its annual festival, nicknamed the Sasarasuri. During the popular festival, men called Sasarashi wear comical Japanese Hyottoko masks, a slovenly undershirt, and mismatched footwear and engage in a unique and strange dance. The shrine is situated along the ancient Chikuni Kaido salt road in a remote mountain area where many vestiges of ancient times still color the landscape. The festival is held on the second Sunday in September each year.

    A Shinto shrine located in Nagakura, Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku County, Nagano Prefecture. Just when the shrine was founded is not clear, but it is ancient, having been included in the Heian period Engi-shiki regulations. The current Honden front shrine was built in 1758. The shrine's grounds are maintained as Nagakura Park.

    A Shinto shrine located in Tono, Okuwa Village, Kiso County, Nagano Prefecture. The shrine actually consists of four shrines - Hakusan-jinja Shrine itself as well as Kumano, Izu, and Zao shrines. Erected in 1334, all of the shrines have been designated National Important Cultural Properties, and the shrines are the oldest shrine structures in the prefecture. The shrine makes up part of the Old Trade Route of Kisoji: Preserver of the Mountain and Survivor of Time Japan Heritage listing.

    "A Shinto shrine located in Hiyoshi, Kiso Town, Kiso County, Nagano Prefecture. A Hachiman shrine dedicated to Minamoto no Yoshinaka (also known as Kiso Yoshinaka), the shrine's name literally means ""army raising Hachiman shrine,"" a name derived from its fame as the location where an army was raised to defeat the mighty Taira clan. A huge Japanese zelkova tree on the grounds is said to have been around since the time of Yoshinaka and is believed to be over 800 years old."

    Nishina Shinmeigu Shrine is located in Yashiro Miyamoto, Omachi City. It is believed to have been founded in the Heian period, and the main hall, at the beginning of the Edo period in 1636 in “Shinmeizukuri” style, has been designated a National Treasure. In addition, the “Koshiki Saku Hajime no Shinji” ceremony held on March 15th and annual “Daidai Kagura” festival have been designated cultural properties of Nagano Prefecture.

    This shrine is near Ogama in Nozawaonsen and holds a festival every year on September 8 and 9 called the “Nozawaonsen Garden Lantern Festival.” It includes a parade, a lion dance, a Sarutahiko dance, a “Thirty-six Immortals of Poetry” dance, a fireworks display, and many other attractions. Slabs with haikus by Basho Matsuo, a large zelkova tree over 1,000 years old, and about 100 stone steps can be found on the shrine grounds as well.

    Togakushi-jinja Shrine is a longstanding shrine located on the sacred Mt. Togakushi that consists of the rear shrine, central shrine, Hoko shrine (Hokosha), Kuzuryu shrine, and Hinomiko shrine. The deity Uwaharu is enshrined in the Hokosha, and is said to be the deity of academic discovery, the arts, needlework, safe birth, women and children. It’s about 30 minutes from the Shinanomachi Interchange on the Joshin-Etsu Expressway.

The main sanctuary was built in the 18th century and features elaborate shrine architecture known as ""ikkensha sumikiiri kasugazukuri."""
