    Nagano Pref. Matsumotoshi Adumi Kamikouchi
This is a sanctuary in the rear shrine of Hotaka-jinja Shrine with a scenic pond which is a symbol of the Japan Alps (Kamikochi) of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. The pond was formed when stone and sediment from Mt. Myojin filled a tributary of the Azusa River. It is split into two ponds giving it a pear-like shape, and is a picturesque spot where one can enjoy walking and looking out over the greens of the water’s reflection and the pond’s large stones. Every year on October 8th the Boat Festival is held to pray for safety on the mountain, and one can see the mystical sight of the dragon head boat drifting through the pond surrounded by autumn leaves.

This is a facility in the Togakushi ninja village in Togakushi, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, separated into three buildings: the Togakushi Folk Museum, the Togakushi Ninja Museum, and the Ninja Trick Mansion. The Togakushi Folk Museum, restored from an Edo period rice tax granary building, displays 2,000 items relating to everyday items that support local customs. The Togakushi Ninja Museum has around 500 items including ninja tools and various ninja documents by which one can learn about Togakushi ninja arts. The Ninja Trick Mansion is full of activities that even adults can enjoy like children. With a shuriken (throwing star) dojo and coffee house, it is a spot that adults and children can play around for a whole day.

The display of the museum was dry and had no English. The best part was the trick house. Each room in the house had different exit. One was behind a painting. One was on the floor. One was a slide...

This art museum which opened in 2010 displays 100 works of Iiyama City resident doll maker Mayumi Takahashi. It is a popular spot where visitors can enjoy recalling their hometowns, the expressions of the grandma and grandpa dolls—looking like they are about to chatter—bringing back nostalgic memories. On weekends and holidays there is often a queue to get inside. The dolls on display are changed around twice a year. The nearest station is Kita-Iiyama Station.

It was a great time for me to have a chance to visit this museum in march 2014! Lots of elaborate dolls are exhibited with the nice lighting. I could see the exhibition inside the museum consist of...

    Nagano Pref. Uedashi Sanadamachiosa 5029-3
This is a castle site believed to have been the main castle of the Sanada family before the construction of Ueda Castle. Cleverly using the advantages of the geography, the building skills of the Sanada family are evident in every detail. It is also a scenic spot overlooking Toishi Castle and Yazawa Castle.

Gives an understanding of the type of place mountain fortresses were located. Great view of the Ueda / Shioda Plain. But a fuller "castle" experience can be had at Ueda Castle down below.

This is a museum in Sanada Town, Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. displaying materials related to the Sanada family. The history of the Sanada family is introduced through documents and arms focused mainly on Yukitaka Sanada, Masayuki Sanada, and Yukimura Sanada, members of the 24 generals of Shingen Takeda, and Yukimura’s brother Nobuyuki Sanada, the first lord of the Matsushiro feudal domain. A highlight is the sight of the restored armor and helmets belonging to Masayuki, Yukimura and Nobuyuki. At the connected Sanada-an one can try local cuisine like chestnut and sesame rice balls and Soba-Suiton (open only weekends and holidays from April 15 to the beginning of November, except in May when it is open every day).

This museum contains detail historical information of Sanada clan so I chose to visit for sure. However considering its location, it's not convenient for visitors without a car. I did have a rental...

This was built for the mother-in-law of ninth generation Matsushiro domain lord Yukinori Sanada towards the end of the Edo period. From the Meiji period it became a private residence of the Sanda family, and in 1966 it was transferred along with heirlooms to the care of Nagano City. It is a court construction with a main building, front gate, seven storehouses and garden, and one can enjoy the charms of the four seasons from within. Paper cutting and koto performances are held in the third storehouse.

This will give you an idea of how the gentry lived in Japan during the Edo period . It is well maintained, and the centerpiece of a number of historical sites, including some castle ruins. There are...

This is an activity-based museum in Togakushi, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, where one can learn about the famous Togakushi Soba through buckwheat pounding and the displayed articles. In the hour-long pounding experience a soba expert carefully teaches participants the process from kneading buckwheat flower to cutting the noodles into thin strips. It is possible to take home the noodles one has made or eat them there in the building. The museum uses models and real articles to introduce Togakushi soba history and culture in an easy-to-understand way. There is a free-to-use 50-meter-tall slide on the viewing platform, making it a popular place for children too.

Passed on by between three generations of parent and child, the high quality wine has been well received at competitions at home and abroad. The grapes grown in the natural extreme heat and cold of Kikyogahara have a flavor only this region can make. Nagano Pref. Chikumashi Kamiyamada Shiroyama 3509-1
Built on the site of Aratojo Castle, the epicenter of the fierce Battle of Kawanakajima fought between Oda Nobunaga and Uesugi Kenshin, here you can get a sense of what mountain castles were like during that time, and the park is visited by a great many tourists from both in and outside the prefecture. From the watchtowers, you can get a sweeping view of such picturesque scenery as the Chikuma River and the Kamiyada Hot Spring area.

Arato castle is not a castle in the typical sense. It is a couple of sheds, a fence and a watch tower. It provides a very good view of the town of Kamiyamada. Unfortunately there are no other...

The head temple of the nearby Kitamuki-kannon Temple, this Buddhist temple was built as one of the three “raku-ji” temples (the Choraku-ji Temple, Anraku-ji Temple, and Joraku-ji Temple) in 825. During the Kamakura period, the temple flourished as a center of Tendai Buddhism. The temple’s principal object of worship, the “Wisdom of Observation Amitabha,” is considered an extremely rare example of its type found anywhere in the country. The Hon-do (main hall) has a rounded thatched roof; behind it stands a two-tier pagoda  that is registered as an Important Cultural Property and which is the spot where the Buddhist statue enshrined in the Kitamuki-kannon Temple in the back is said to have appeared. The Joraku-ji Temple Art Museum  on the grounds exhibits rare and valuable temple treasures such as the Tokugawa Ieyasu Nikka Nenbutsu prayer scroll; a figure of Avalokitesvara; and the Miuraya-zu painting, a National Art Treasure. Closest station: Bessho-Onsen Station.
