This Italian restaurant located in Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku County, Nagano Prefecture is popular for its authentic oven-fired Naples-style pizza. The Japanese-style architecture with stone walls gives one the impression that it was built by Italians as a vacation home in Karuizawa. They take pride in using not only local Nagano Prefecture-produced ingredients but also carefully selected seafood sourced from across Japan. The lunch special is popular as it offers a set of chewy pizza and an appetizer assortment together as a set.

The history of this soba (buckwheat noodle) restaurant dates back to the Edo period. Distinguished by its glossy, thick noodles, in winter, raw noodles are also available for takeaway to cook at home. The restaurant's traditional cuisine and soba set meal require reservation in advance. In addition to non-smoking seats on the first floor and smoking seats on the second, the restaurant also offers a reservable detached room which seats two to six people. The restaurant's charming appearance remains unchanged from the early Showa period.

Spending some days in this area, where Soba noodles were born, we had a good chance to sample many hand-made ones. These ones were our absolute favourites! They are darker in colour and have a...

The noodles, which the restaurant makes in-house from unpolished Shinshu buckwheat, are characterized by a hearty flavor. Some of the featured dishes are Tororo Tenzaru with grated yam and seven kinds of tempura and Oroshi Soba, in which the noodles are topped with tempura. In addition, the restaurant serves a local Shinshu specialty, Oyaki (stuffed buckwheat dumplings). The restaurant is open until 3 p.m., but be aware that it may close earlier if it runs out of soba.

They make their own stone-ground flour and keep both finely ground and coarsely ground varieties on hand. "A long-established shop said to be the originator of ""Sauce Katsu-don,"" a deep fried pork cutlet rice bowl. They prepare this Nagano specialty by smothering the cutlet with their secret sauce and placing it on rice with heaps of cabbage. It's not cooked with egg like many kinds of pork cutlets, so you can really enjoy the pork's crispy texture and meatiness. Another popular item is their pork loin katsu-don, featuring a nice balance of flavor and fatty meat. The beautifully cooked cutlet is soft and juicy and bursts with flavor when you take a bite. They are also known for their soft and juicy pork fillet katsu-don as well as their deep fried shrimp and pork fillet katsu-don Japanese style meal sets."

    Nagano Shimoina-gun Achimura Chisato 4224-1
A restaurant located on the Nagano Prefecture side of the Mt. Ena tunnel on the Chuo Expressway. There you can dine on fish dishes made with amago trout and char raised in clear streams flowing from 2,191-meter Mt. Ena. Nothing beats eating the salt-grilled fish around the tables with built-in fire pits. You'll definitely want to order gohei-mochi rice cakes, an Ina Valley local favorite smothered in a secret sauce made with walnuts and Japanese pepper. They also have a fishing pond and you can grill or fry the fish you catch right at the shop. Of course, they'll clean them for you to take home, too.

This is a soba noodle restaurant on National Route 152 stands out with its thatched roof. They aren't limited by their relationship with other shops, so they pursue classic soba goodness their own way. Their Dattan Soba comes recommended; it contains about 120 times more rutin than ordinary soba. The town's specialty product, Shinano Kiriyama Dantan Soba, is a fabulous dish that overturns the conventional wisdom that bitterness has no place in food. For dessert, try their popular Datan Soba Cheese Tart made with special buckwheat flour and lots of cream cheese.

"Maruyama Coffee's fourth shop is located in the Harunire Terrace with its concept of ""everyday Karuizawa."" They use a metal filtered French press to extract the inherent goodness of the coffee. This lets you enjoy their high quality specialty coffee in Karuizawa's open air surrounded by its natural abundance. It is also the only Maruyama Coffee branch with an on-site bookstore, featuring carefully selected titles you can purchase on the spot. We also recommend grabbing a coffee to go and strolling around Harunire Terrace, which is on the Yukawa River."

Stopped by after lunch at Harunireterrace. Place is simple but stylish with great choice of coffee beans. Coffee beans are quite expensive but you got 2 free drink with each purchase so it was a...

A restaurant at the starting point of the Shiraito Highland Way connecting Kita-Karuizawa and Kyu-Karuizawa. A veteran shop with a 100-year-plus history, it was originally a lodge for climbers on Mt. Asama. Today it's still a break spot for travelers, serving soba and udon noodles, cake, drinks, and other light fare. Some trails and trailheads are close by, so many people stop in for a break while checking their maps. It's about 30 minutes by car from Karuizawa Station and is a great place to unwind with a high ceiling and a modern atmosphere.
