This old estate was the residence of the Takano family, who provided the medical herb used to make licorice for the Shogunate during the Edo period. Also known as kanzo-yashiki, or licorice estate, its exterior remains the way it looked in the late Edo period. It is notable for the two-tier raised roof in the middle of its gabled roof. Every spring, it hosts a Hina-kazari to Momo no Hana Matsuri (Hina Decoration and Peach Flower Festival). During the festival, the home is decorated by many gorgeous hina dolls, including hanging hina decorations, kyoho-bina, and kokin-bina.

The buildings which number approximately 20 have been turned into restaurants where you can taste different types of local cuisine, areas for handmade interactive workshops and shops selling local products. Also because Mt. Fuji can be clearly seen, many people take pictures together with the thatched roofed buildings.

This museum that opened in 1982 is a facility where people can learn the history of Yamanashi from archeological materials. The museum exhibits artifacts that paint a picture of the prefecture from the Paleolithic age to the Edo period, the time of Kofu Castle. Museum visitors can also participate in hands-on activities such as ancient fire-starting or making magatama beads.

This is a house where Mt. Fuji’s Oshi (low ranking Shinto priest) priests have worked for generations. Oshi were people who carried out missionary work and prayer for the Mt. Fuji religious faith, looking after the lodgings and meals of Fujiko believers who were making the pilgrimage up Mt. Fuji. This is a presently existing invaluable building which supported the Mt. Fuji faith. The main building which was constructed in 1768 has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2011. It is also a constituent asset of the World Heritage Fuji, and you can see materials such goshinzen room and mountain climbing costumes at the Residence.

Its small but the entrance fee is very cheap. When visited in conjunction with the nearby Kitaguchi-hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, it gives you an idea of how one starts a pilgrimage to Mt Fuji.
